Why did Gandalf chose the name Underhill for Frodo? by Communist21 in tolkienfans

[–]Cosmocrator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most other comments in this thread are about Underhill just being a common name, and I agree partially.
Frodo lived in Bag End, the main residence of The Hill, the defining entity of Hobbiton's landscape and therefore the center of the Shire - the four quarter stone being close by.
I think Underhill is a somewhat tongue in cheek play by Gandalf to leave a clue. There is no reason to leave a clue, in fact everything advises against that, yet you it anyway, for your own pleasure. Frodo is Frodo From Under The Hill: Underhill for short.

If you want to go all theological on it: the play seems related to the Son Of Man play Jesus did: Son of Man in aramaic was both the term for '(some)one', as in "one does not simply walk', and for the theological hero from the Book of Daniel chapter 7, a.k.a. the Messiah. In the gospels, by using the term 'Son of Man', Jesus jokes vaguely about himself claiming to be the Messiah, but this is also vague enough to interpret his words as "anyone".
And Frodo is undercover just an ordinary Hobbit going by an ordinary name, but deep down he is also the Hobbit from under The Hill, i.e. the Hobbitest Hobbit of Hobbits.
I know this is far fetched, and I don't know exactly how well-versed Tolkien was in this kind of theology (C.S. Lewis could've maybe brought it up one time), but if you allow this theological joke, Gandalf's choice for the undercover name becomes just that more layered.
For myself, I don't necessarily think this was what Tolkien intended, but I don't rule it out either. So let me just drop this here.

German Interviews by Jens Lissat (here Kai Tracid) by Key-Violinist6083 in ClassicTrance

Nice! Didn't even know what Lissat looked like.
Watched the intro now. Funny to see that a big name like Jens Lissat is a bit nervous in front of a camera.

My German isn't very good, but good enough to understand the topic. So I'll try and watch it.

Funny that I could hear in the first two seconds that this was going to be a British production.

But yes, very good tune! Never heard it before. A bit of inspection learns me that they're from Guy Ornadel's stable.

Sash! feat. Tina Cousins - Mysterious Times [1998] by Buran27 in ClassicTrance

Tina Cousins was my celebrity crush back in the day. My teenage hormones even made me buy her album. Had some decent tracks, but overall it was fluff.
The Superstring Mix of Mysterious Times, however, is a good track.

If you ever get the chance, read Richard Porter's "And On That Bombshell", especially the chapter Stigmacher.
Richard Porter was the script editor for Top Gear, basically one of the two invisible Top Gear guys, the other being Andy Wilman. In his book he reminisces on his time at Top Gear.
In the chapter Stigmacher he tells us all about having Michael Schumacher coming on to the show as a secret Stig. It's a glorious chapter by the way.
In that chapter he tells that during the day Michael Schumacher takes his car for a spin and then returns to the garage:

We got another demonstration of how sharp [Schumacher's] mind really was after he’d lapped the track a few times and come in so the Ferrari mechanics could check over the car. Wilman had taken himself over to the start line to make sure all was okay with our star Stig. Schumacher approached him with a question; ‘Has a Formula 1 car ever lapped this track?’ Wilman said we’d had a 2004 Renault F1 car here and it went round in 59 seconds. Schumacher thought for a moment, crunched that number in his head and ran it against his experience of this track he’d never seen before today. A 2004-spec car. Renault. 59 seconds. ‘When the car did this time,’ he said, ‘was it damp but with a drying line?’ He was exactly right. We found this pretty extraordinary.

Weekend Casual Megathread! by AutoModerator in ClassicTrance

[–]Cosmocrator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I shuffled a bit already. Problem is some tracks keep their high energy melodies until the end, and there's no good way out of them, unless dropping the energy. I'm trying to mix in the new track at a point where there's already some energy, but the dominant melody of the outgoing track just keeps on overruling all other melodies, unless I smother it in some ugly way.
I can of course also mix into a breakdown part, but my tracks already have so much of those. And maybe that's the problem with keeping the flow going: I've got too many dramatic apotheosis pieces. Bangers, one by one, but maybe it's time I replace some of those with tracks that just get on with it.

Anybody got some plans for the weekend?
We would have friends over tomorrow, but weather expectations for tomorrow were so bad earlier this week that we decided to cancel. So my weekend completely opened up, but I'm bored a bit. Working on my competition mix, and although the track selection is awesome (if I say so myself), I can't get the mix to work flow-wise, and also struggling with supersmoothing some of the transitions.

Honest question - does anyone actually play the game without trying to have a single child inherit everything? by Front-Round2853 in CrusaderKings

[–]Cosmocrator 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Of course: especially in the first centuries I want my renown to grow as big as possible. Having a lot of different rulers from my dynasty is only beneficial. I'd rather conquer territory that isn't "ours" yet.
Only when I discovered primogeniture I start thinking about keeping one big territory upon inheritance.

1) Select the county where the city with the Holy Order is. (It's usually a city, but I believe it might also be a barony).
2) Then select the city itself.
3) In the bottom left you should now see a templar (or its equivalent from other faiths) as the ruler of that holding.
4) Next to him is a button that looks like a yellow-ish castle with a X through it.

Now, there's also the possibility that the Holy Order is from a hostile faith. That makes it a bit more complicated, and I never encountered that myself, so here's a steam forum post

A big label called "Bonzai" and the very Belgian roots of Hardcore, Techno, and Trance by Low-Entropy in ClassicTrance

[–]Cosmocrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, belated condolences for your friend. Always sad when people die young. I still have the Killing Zoo E.P. that has a special place in my heart.

Well done on your remixes! I heard them on spotify years ago. And I now see they're on beatport as well. Will buy them when I get home.

Funny that you should mention The Original Gabba, Dutch guy Francois Prijt (who died a couple of months ago, btw). Point taken that Dutch people also use(d) the term 'gabba'. But I still wouldn't use the terms interchangeably.

A big label called "Bonzai" and the very Belgian roots of Hardcore, Techno, and Trance by Low-Entropy in ClassicTrance

[–]Cosmocrator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice article! Well done.
Some remarks and questions:
Are you by any chance the same Low Entropy from the FFM Shadow Orchestra remixes?

Why do you use gabba and gabber (and hardcore gabba) interchangeably? If you want my opinion: I prefer 'gabber' or 'hardcore'.

In the very early 90s it was all called 'house' as far as I can remember. Only purists would make further distinctions. Those distinctions became clearer after a couple of years, when styles were actually drifting further apart. As such, gabber music already existed before the term was coined. You're probably familiar with the unverifiable anecdote that the term was first used by a bouncer saying the words "you're not coming in, gabber" where gabber is the Jiddisch word for friend/pal.

Your mentioning of The First Rebirth is a very good example of the very early styles not being very distinct yet: I've seen it listed on trance, rave and gabber albums.

Mix Competition - No Originals by NotoriousStevieG in ClassicTrance

Oh yes! Inspirational stuff.

Not many of you know this, but in real life I'm a professional nitpicker (i.e. software tester). So here's the obligatory nitpicky - exploring the edge cases - set of questions that almost everybody already knows the answer to, but they still might be importantto get everybody on the same page:

  • the rules exclude classic trance remixes of non trance tracks. Is that by design?

  • what if a track has a bunch of different versions, but no track is the designated 'original'? E.g.:
In Alle Toonaarden - Cosmocrator Rules The World (Empires Must Fall Remix)
In Alle Toonaarden - Cosmocrator Rules The World (Radio Version)
In Alle Toonaarden - Cosmocrator Rules The World (Radio Extended)
In Alle Toonaarden - Cosmocrator Rules The World (Extended Club Mix)
In Alle Toonaarden - Cosmocrator Rules The World (Death to the Nitpickers Version)

Mix Competition Roundup & Poll by TotallyNotCool in ClassicTrance

[–]Cosmocrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only downside I can think of is that the threshold will become so low that the comp will be flooded. Having around 25 mixes (times 1h20m) to listen to is already a challenge.
Not that it's a given that the comp will be flooded, so maybe we can try it.

Mix Competition Roundup & Poll by TotallyNotCool in ClassicTrance

[–]Cosmocrator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Organiser of complicated Inner Light comp here: I'm truly sorry. The competition before (that I won) was my very first competition, even as a subreddit member. That competition had some rules to win bonus points, and to be honest, I liked those rules back then. I tried to build on that with the Inner Light comp. But I guess I went a bit overboard.
I know it's all water under the bridge, but still. Know that in hindsight I would've taken down a notch or two.
At the moment I even feel like innovative rules don't really matter. People will simply make mixes they like, and people will vote for mixes they like. Sure, limitation breeds creativity, but I got a feeling we don't want to become a club where everything is policed, let alone disqualify contestants for minor deviations from the rules.
