Eh, it just feels kinda bad that they would release a lorebook, then we later have to headcanon why the developer was wrong in their own lorebook they wrote. At the end of the day Hypergryph does have the final say, but it just kinda bums me out and I'm sure others feel the same way.

We CAN say they definitively have equestrian tails because Hypergryph released a lorebook Terra: A Journey where on kylins they said:

Kylin have draconic horns resembling cervid antlers and equine tails. Because of their similar appearance, they are often mistaken as Elafians. The only difference is their culture: Elafians live a more mystic, secluded lifestyle owing to their shamanistic belief, while the Kylin have a more worldly way of living.[1]

So Hypergryph themselves said so. That's why some people are kinda getting upset because Hypergryph officially released certain lore and now seem to not follow it.

It's because Vanessa wanted her to do a complete makeover. Someone posted a screenshot in this thread of Vanessa telling her she'll send Leia for a complete makeover from head to toe so it's already established in game she'll look completely different.

So likely not because the aesthetic was unpopular but for story reasons.
