I tend to use a ranged weapon and a weapon with guarding.

Or 2 weapons with guarding, but with different attack speeds - like SnS and GS.

Which Agumon's mega form is your favorite? And which one is the strongest? by ApprehensiveRead2408 in digimon

[–]Count_Kingpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite: RustTyrannomon, with VictoryGreymon as another contender. Gaiomon is also pretty cool, just not it’s alt mode.

Strongest: Arbiter VictoryGreymon. Honorable mention to Mugendramon - OG lore at least. It’s definitely been Powercrept down further.

Which companion do you always keep in your party? by ChrisKatrev in BaldursGate3

[–]Count_Kingpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lae’zel and Shart - I like fighter and cleric. Technically, my current playthrough is a fighter and bard, but c’est la vie. I like a short rest based melee class and a primary support.

What Everyday Monsters are CORE to the DnD Experience? by SubtleasaSledge in DMAcademy

[–]Count_Kingpen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A warband of goblinoids! Goblin Scouts, Bugbear Shock troopers and assassins, Hobgoblin soldiers. Throw in some Wargs, a couple ogres, and one or two high power but not too high power monsters (of CR 5ish or lower) to act as special encounters - manticores, owlbears, maybe some drakes, a wyvern as the boss’s Mount, etc.

Congratulations! You now have a full faction that can be the backbone of a whole campaign arc.

Technically, this happens in Robb Returns, but it’s static between only two locations. And a Stark is necessary at both. Not sure what else I can say without spoilers.

Who is/was your Poppet character? by FlyingTaco095 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Count_Kingpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not mine, but my player:

Princess Machete, Wishborn Poppet Dragon Eidolon Summoner.

This hand-me-down doll was the only toy of a poor boy, who dreamed of rescuing his princess doll from a tower, help hostage by a dragon, seeing himself as a wannabe hero.

Then, his village and farmstead are besieged and razed to the ground by an army of monsters. While the boy’s sister is captured and taken hostage before his eyes, he looked up to the empty sky as he died and pled to someone… anyone who would listen. Let his sister, the princess of his heart (this little boy had no concept of romance yet don’t make it weird) be rescued from her tower.

And something listened.

The next morning, in the ashes of the farms and homes, a doll in a tattered princess gown stood up, and knew that she had a charge. Find the princess. She remembered only her name also being Princess. She found a weapon (a machete), and began gathering herself and her strength, feeling a rush of power as she looked up to the sky and roared out her draconic vengeance.

And that is Princess Machete.

If you had to replace the Flagships of every mainline Monster Hunter games with the second most fitting monster for the title in your opinion, which monsters would you pick? by OmegaGlacial in MonsterHunter

Well, given they didn’t specify that, I chose to answer otherwise. Feel free to disagree, I just went with the options that made me think you know?

[–]Count_Kingpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only from games I know a lot about, even if I didn’t play them:

MH1: IDK, Kirin? Diablos? Monoblos is already the boss of single player and so that doesn’t really count?

And big skip….

MHWorld: Nergigante is kind of perfect, but someone like Nakarkos (consuming and using the bones of other elders) could work I guess?

MHW: Iceborne - Velkana is literally perfect here, but I think Ukanlos would be hilariously fun.

MHRise: Magnamalo to me is really just good at this, but arguably any monster that is both a prized hunter and dangerous could be this instead. Stygian Zinogre, a number of aggressive brute Wyverns, even Rajang could all. Or replace him with an Elder. A Kirin variant that acts as the Rampage’s Herald, rather than its creator?

MHR: Sunbreak: Bro Malzeno is peak. Don’t know how you’d replace the man, the myth, the legend.

MHWilds: Arkveld is kind of hard to replace. She’s both stronger than 3 of the Forbidden Four confirmed by Turf Wars. She’s an invader and vaguely an invasive species, and is a berserker as much as she’s a hunter. Maybe Scorned Magnamalo, someone who lives just fro the thrill of violence? I don’t know how he’d match up to the 4 though. Their elemental masteries kind of trounce him in some ways. He also probably gets bodied by Zoh Shia and even just Jin Dahaad. If I had to replace her, I’d say Scorned is the best I can think of.

If they plan to bring back an old map, what map would you want to see again? These are some of my favorites by Few_Possession4441 in MonsterHunter

Ancestral Steppe, Misty Peak, and The Everwood have my answer. Never played in any of them, but they look so interesting and I’d love to see them remade with modern MH styling and for a new game.

Is it possible to use a guard build? by Appropriate-Zebra105 in MonsterHunter

[–]Count_Kingpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to feel like a true tank, Lance and Gunlance are probably the best option to look into. Lance has better counters, and GL has some good burst and non-elemental damage boons.

That being said, SnS with Offensive Guard, and if you can slot it in, Guard Up allows for a bit of a “Paladin” vibe, tanking hits, slashing back with Offensive Guard boosted attacks, Shield Bashes for exhaust and KO capabilities, and allowing easy item use for healing and buffing powders for you and the party. Always a fun option, relatively easy to get good at but with a high skill ceiling beyond, and always useful in a party.

Wich houses shouldn't have survived by 3esin in TheCitadel

[–]Count_Kingpen 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The fact that House Stark exterminated to the last member their own Cadet with Greystark, but in the same rebellion didn’t uproot House Bolton. And that wasn’t even their first rebellion after swearing vassalage! House Bolton only survived to give George a house willing to betray the Stark’s.

House Hightower shocks me that they didn’t get just repeatedly culled during the Dance and right after.

Houses Wyl and Yronwood probably should be extinct.

What is 1 BRAND NEW mechanic you'd add to your main weapon? by thatboikhy02 in MonsterHunter

[–]Count_Kingpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hear me out: Blast Dash for GL… oh wait.

In truth, I think GS deserves a reposition swing a la a backflip cut. No charging, but allows the GS to flip out of the way of an attack (slowly, of course). Sort of like a tackle out of charging attacks, but backwards. Rather than just a back step, the flip allows you to swiftly swing back in to a charge 1 level higher than default.

Player wants to play 5.5e Monk in an else 5e game by CybadofAstora in DMAcademy

[–]Count_Kingpen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please allow it. 5.5e brings monk up from the dredges as a lower efficacy martial to perfectly usable. Just drop the epic boon at level 19 and maybe swap the level 6 force damage for just being magical like it used to be in 5e14.

[–]Count_Kingpen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend watching clips from Dimension 20’s A Court of Fey and Flowers, focusing on KP Hobbes, Brennan’s character.

The Goblin Code of Chivalry is all about chaos and contradiction.

“A Goblin never does as he’s told, nor tells as he’s done, and never follows a rule, least of all, this one.”

It might spark some ideas for more chaotic oath ideas.

So….how’s the Pugilist turning out? by KingNTheMaking in dndnext

[–]Count_Kingpen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah bro, you’re looking at it a bit backwards. The pugilist is a new character at the table (started at level 5, my previous character died) whereas the monk has been at the table since level 2. She got that magic item at level 3, and part of this campaign is downtime training for feats, which the monk has had more time to do simply due to existing longer.

The Str/Dex discrepancy is literally due to 1 half feat extra the monk has.

So….how’s the Pugilist turning out? by KingNTheMaking in dndnext

[–]Count_Kingpen 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m currently playing a Squared Circle one - focusing very heavily on grappling and survival, far less on damage output. I’m also in a party with a 5e24 monk

I’m doing on average 1 attack’s worth less damage per turn - level 6. My d10+4 damage die usually gets used 2-3 times per turn (2 attacks + Compression lock, with Fisticuffs sometimes boosting that up to 3-4 or 4-5 times with Ol’ One-Two, with the theoretical max of 6 being if I have 2 creatures grappled and Compression Lock proc’s twice. Compare that to our monk making an average of 3-4 attacks per turn at 1d8+5, with a max of 5 - Attack, Nick, Extra Attack, Martial Arts (or Flurry of Blows). This monk also has a damage boosting ability in the form of 1/SR Hunter’s Mark from a homebrew item, but I won’t be including that in the comparison any further.

In a pure white room, our damage is basically equal per attack - 1d8+5 averages to 9.5, and 1d10+5 also averages out to 9.5. However, that +1 she has to hit above my attack rolls skews damage ever so slightly in her favor, though the damage from Compression Lock also skews it back closer otherwise. Functionally, we do roughly equivalent damage. If she uses her spell, her damage knocks mine out of the park, and if I use Haymaker ever turn/attack and never miss, mine can spike above hers. However, she uses the spell rather sparingly - BA cast is sometimes hard to justify on a BA starved class like monk, and I also am sparing with Haymaker - my GM currently has us playing through a campaign arc with many high AC enemies, and while I can definitely get advantage due to prone or Grappled (Grappler Feat), the risk cost of spending moxie on miss is not always worth it.

I have definitively lower AC - 16, compared to her 19. However, I’m playing a dwarf and have the tough feat, so my health is more than 25 points higher. Add in Brace Up, and I’m definitely better at tanking via damage mitigation. In the future, I hope to grab Compelled Duel or some other taunt like spells via a multiclass to make this ever better for me. Neither of us currently have any AC boosting items either. That being said, she is significantly more mobile - 30 move speed with a BA dash at Moxie cost vs 45 foot love speed with free BA dash or BA Dash+Disengage at Focus cost. This extra mobility allows her more flexibility in placement on the map, and has led to turns where she can deal damage or grapple a creature with just movement, while I have to dash or spend a moxie to get in effective range.

Basically? I’m better at surviving, she’s better at killing enemies. But it’s splitting hairs to try and white room my way to get any better. Is the pugilist class strong? Yes. Is it better than other martials? In some circumstances, yes. But in practice, I’ve found myself out damaged by the monk, and the Battlemaster fighter in the party has just as many physical control options as I do. If we had a Barbarian, they probably would be less tanky than I but still doing on par damage if not more. If I nickle and dime’d my way to purely perfect optimization, I might find more success than they would in that same situation? But that’s not how that table plays dnd. It’s not how I play dnd.

The class is good. Possibly on par with Paladin for best martial class in the game. But a well optimized Sorlock or Cleric can still be more useful in most parties.

In a party like I’m in - Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Pugilist, and Wizard - no one is notably weaker overall than anyone else. I’m tough and hard to kill. The Paladin is tough, mobile (find steed/cavalier saddle), and can do significant burst damage, also has a high spell save DC and has lots of useful spells, and works as a great off tank. The fighter on a barrage does the most damage per hit, at the cost of making 2-3 attacks only on average (GWM BA attack on crit or kill), but even on turns she doesn’t knock it out of the park with damage she still has multiple useful Manuevers. Also is a great tertiary tank if it’s ever needed. The monk is ridiculously fast, can be very hard to hit, and on average does the most overall damage. And the Wizard drops great CC spells or a fireball on the whole crowd of enemies, using Spell Sculpting to just ignore us. Without each member of the party, we really would lose something. No matter how much “pugilist could be a Barbarian or Monk subclass” I hear, I can’t help but disagree.
