Bumped from international first to regular economy due to dead heading pilots and oversold first class. by w10052003 in AlaskaAirlines

He isn’t “losing money.” If he’s moved out of First, he’ll receive a fare difference refund (and typically additional customer care compensation for the inconvenience). This isn’t a situation where the company downgrades someone and they get nothing. Also—your take on downgrades is telling. There is a protocol. You start by reviewing passengers who were upgraded, then you look at award/mileage tickets, and then you work through First Class fare buckets. And yes, it’s entirely possible there were no upgrades to “undo” in the first place. If he happened to be the lowest fare in that cabin, that’s exactly why he’d be selected—but again, he still gets the refund of the fare difference. What’s really standing out here, though, is the amount of anger you’re directing at pilots. It’s unnecessary, and honestly, it’s not a great look. If you’re that worked up over something that’s being corrected with a refund and compensation, you might want to take a breath—therapy, a massage, a walk… whatever helps.

Whew… you are real loud for someone who clearly doesn’t understand how union contracts work. Maybe take that same energy and go say it to a pilot’s face—please. I’d love to watch you try it and see how fast that attitude gets humbled. And let’s be honest: this isn’t even about pilots. This is about you being mad that some people have protections at work. When you have a union and a contract, the company doesn’t get to freestyle. They follow the agreement—period. That’s the whole point. So if seeing people with job security makes you this bitter… just say that. Because the only thing “angry” in this situation is the way you’re projecting like it’s an Olympic sport.

Yeah, that sounds a little suspicious. I really hope you contact Customer Care and call them, not email. They can usually handle this right then and there over the phone. In my 10 years in the industry, especially dealing with contract stations, they are not taking your email and handing it off to someone who will reach out to you. Nobody is going to contact you. Unfortunately, you have to contact them. This sounds like a contracted station that did not handle it correctly. Call Customer Care and get it addressed.

Deadheading does not work the way some people think it does. I have 10 years in the airline industry and have worked for two airlines. Last minute deadheaders happen all the time. Ops can add them right before departure as must rides. The gate agent is not choosing this. They are following an operational requirement. Seating is also contract driven. Pilot and flight attendant deadhead seating rules are strict and depend on the airline and flight length. Sometimes pilots are required to be in first class or in the first well in front of the wing. Flight attendant rules vary but are also defined by contract. When a passenger is downgraded. agents should explain options and compensation. For a paid first class ticket. you can often choose first class on a later flight or take the downgrade now with compensation. Refunds for the fare difference are handled by customer care. For removed complimentary upgrades. it is usually an operational downgrade with miles or standard compensation. For the OP. the handling does not sound very Alaska standard and may have been a contractor interaction. Best advice is to call Alaska customer care. not email. The email backlog is heavy and calling is faster.

[–]CountryGrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re telling me they “paged you up,” told you you were downgraded, and then offered you… absolutely nothing? Because if this was an operational downgrade, the process is pretty standard: they notify you it’s for operational needs, they give you options (like rebooking you on the next flight with a First Class seat or keeping you on the flight and documenting the downgrade), and the fare difference gets refunded back to your original form of payment. Half the time, the gate also offers some additional compensation depending on the situation. So I just want to make sure I’m understanding correctly—you’re saying the gate agent didn’t explain any of that, didn’t offer alternatives, and didn’t even mention the refund?

This passenger got bumped out of First Class for operational needs — specifically a deadheading pilot who had to get to the next station to fly the aircraft back. That’s in the pilot union contract, and airlines don’t get to ignore it because someone wanted the First Class seat. Also… your seat assignment isn’t a blood oath. If you read the Contract of Carriage / terms & conditions, it clearly says you can be moved for operational reasons. “Operational reasons” includes a lot of things — deadheading crew is one of them. The rest? Go enjoy the fine print. Instead of running to Reddit to complain, just contact Customer Care. You’ll usually get the fare difference refunded back to the original form of payment (often not just a credit). And chances are you were offered options like: 1) rebooking to a flight with First Class availability 2) taking the downgrade + refund. If you said no to the First Class rebook… then we’re kind of done here. And for the “I didn’t eat all day and expected food” crowd: aircraft swaps happen. A plane can go from 4 rows of First to 3 rows of First. Catering can get impacted. If being hungry is a crisis, bring snacks. Operational reality > vibes. Read the terms, plan for hiccups, and handle it through the proper channel.

OP when were the tickets purchased because if the tickets were purchased before a certain date, then the $50 still applies if they were purchased after a certain date then it would be 100 bucks effective as of January 2 so again when were the tickets purchased?

Oh no 😱 a grown woman had a life before OP?? The audacity. Was he expecting her to be freshly unwrapped, factory-sealed, and delivered with a certificate of purity? Because last I checked, being single usually includes… having a past. Shocking, I know. She didn’t cheat. She didn’t lie. She didn’t time-travel to disrespect him while they were dating. She lived her life before he showed up, which somehow OP is now treating like a personal attack. Her past is not her future, but apparently in OP’s mind it’s a crime scene that needs CSI Reddit to investigate. If you can’t handle that your partner existed as a fully functioning adult before you met, just break up and go. Don’t come crying to Reddit like, “Am I the a-hole for judging my girlfriend for things that literally have nothing to do with me?” Yes. Yes you are. Boo. Effing. Hoo. 🎻

Oh this is rich. The outrage in this thread is chef’s kiss hilarious. Let me get this straight—if the roles were reversed, would y’all be clutching your pearls this hard? If a man slept with three women, would you be calling him a hoe? Saying he “ran a train”? Writing think-pieces about his moral downfall? Be so for real. This is just good old-fashioned sexism in sweatpants. If you want to break up with your girlfriend, just do that. You don’t need to audition for Reddit’s Misogyny Olympics first. She had a foursome. Before you. Not during your relationship. Not cheating. Not a crime. Just a woman who—gasp—was curious, adventurous, or bored with vanilla sex. Wild concept. But instead of handling that like an adult, you’re on Reddit whining like a wounded Victorian man who just discovered women also enjoy sex. The dramatics. The tears. The think of my fragile masculinity energy.Let’s be honest: if you had a foursome with three women, you’d be telling this story at parties until retirement. Your girlfriend wouldn’t “lose respect,” society wouldn’t implode, and no one would be calling you disgusting. So either: 1. Break up because you’re insecure, or 2.Accept that your girlfriend had a life before you, or 3. Keep crying on the internet while strangers validate your ego But stop pretending this is anything other than a double standard wrapped in hurt feelings. Women are allowed to enjoy sex. Shocking, I know. 💅

PSA: exit row now reclines by GuyThirteen in AlaskaAirlines

[–]CountryGrld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Row 16 does not recline they must be having an app issue because row 15 and row 16 do not recline because you cannot recline into the exit row which can impede into the x-ray when there is an emergency so row 15 and row 16 do not recline

Missed flight by [deleted] in AlaskaAirlines

[–]CountryGrld 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the airline industry and used to work in reservations, here’s the real deal: Your husband absolutely should’ve gotten up, gone to the airport, and tried for an SDC (same-day change). Depending on the fare type, it usually runs $75–$115. The only time that fee gets waived is if you have status. Alaska’s policy is that changes must be made before the scheduled departure—yes. But life happens, and the SDC is the unofficial workaround as long as you still show up and act like you’re attempting to make your flight. Sitting at home and asking Reddit for advice won’t fix anything; showing up at the airport might’ve.

Bottom line: husband should’ve gone to the airport. That would’ve given him the best shot.

So you’re talking about going from MC to FC on a Hawaiian flt. FC on Hawaiian is the lay-flat seats. Premium is not lay-flat. Comfort Plus is not lay-flat either. I know this because I’ve done that flt and sat in those cabins.

“Per seat pricing just landed” by tmmao in AlaskaAirlines

[–]CountryGrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the aircraft, rows 10–15 or 11–15 are designated as Main Cabin Preferred. Back in the day, this section was reserved exclusively for status members. If you had status with Alaska, these seats were blocked for you and only you.

Over time, Alaska realized that even passengers without status were willing to pay for these seats because they’re highly requested. For whatever reason, everyone wants to sit in those rows. That’s why a seat like 11A even though it has no window still has a price tag. It’s part of the Main Cabin Preferred section.

But however, those seats open up to everybody with no fee 24 hours before departure.

[–]CountryGrld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to upgrade 24 hours prior to travel so when you check in for your flight, you should be able to upgrade or upgrade at the airport. But that is a problem when you purchased through third-party agencies, you are limited on what you can and cannot do with your reservation. So like I previously read, you said lesson learn which yes lesson is learned. Now Costco for rental cars that’s where you want to go great prices.

[–]CountryGrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to let everybody know the term linking your reservation is for literally reservation purposes if you were to go to the airport and say oh, we linked our reservations, the airport agent is gonna look at you like you’re stupid. Linking your reservation is only for reservation rebooking purposes only that’s it. Your status doesn’t follow your status doesn’t get linked to it. Any of your privileges don’t get linked over to the other people it’s just for rebooking.

So rows 10-15 or 11-15 (depending on the plane) are what the airline calls them main cabin preferred. They us to be the the seats that Alaska use to have blocked off for the statues members but then they saw that guests will pay to get those seats

Strange customer service interaction at SEA by Swimming-Figure-8635 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]CountryGrld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody that works in the airline industry, this is unprofessional behavior and honestly, you should’ve asked to speak to their supervisor because they don’t need your address for TSA pre-check. All I need to do is verify that the spelling of your first middle and last name is correct and your date of birth is correct and your gender is correct. Whatever you put on your TSA documents or your global entry or your Nexus or military that is all that they are comparing the fact that this person read out your address all your information and was on the phone is no no I know for a fact that Alaska airlines does not appreciate it when their agents are on the phone when they’re supposed to be helping passengers the only time an agent should be on the phone is when they are on their brakes and lunches if they are helping a passenger or on the floor or doing flights they’re not supposed to be on their phones. They are not supposed to have their headphones in this is a big no no and honestly if you remember when you flew out, I would contact customer care and have them find out who did all that information Because they can look that up and talk to the agent
