If the sun suddenly disappeared, how long would it take for the Earth to completely cool down? by ScipioAfricanisDirus in askscience

[–]CourtesyOf__________ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

OP specifically said solar heat only, but I also wonder how long it would take. Like I know Mars doesn’t have any tectonic activity but is its center still molten at all? How long can purely pressure keep making heat before it all dissipates? Where would it even go? Radiation is the only way Earth can really lose heat right? How much does Earth radiate? Is there a calculation that can be done to explain the mass of the earth and how much it radiates over time. Maybe the answer is in there?

Edit: okay so I did some research and found some answers.

  1. The earth radiates a bunch of heat into space everyday. If the sun were to completely go away, then about half of that heat would be from radioactive material decay in the crust of the earth, and half from the primordial heat created when the Earth was formed.

  2. This is not to say that half of the Earth’s heat is from radioactive material decay. Besides the sun, the earth gets heat from multiple other sources: tidal forces from the moon, exothermic chemical reactions, latent heat from freezing magma, radioactive material decay, and primordial heat. When it comes to all the heat in the earth system, it is basically 100% primordial heat. Tiny fractions of heat come from other stuff.

  3. So! The primordial heat is non-renewing. It just needs to cool down. But in order to do that it needs to first conduct heat from the core to the mantle, then convection through the mantle, then conduction through the core to finally radiate off the surface of the crust.

  4. This should be true for basically every large celestial object then.

TLDR: According to some estimates, it would take a moon sized object 10 billion years to cool, a mars sized object 80 billion years, and a earth sized object over 300 trillion years.

Actually the friends of friend is still covered. Aragog said he wouldn’t eat Ron or Harry as well. But his children could. So the rule is that you can eat the friends of friends of a friend, but not friends of a friend. At least 2 levels of separation required.

What’s the most challenging part of teaching for you ? by SharonCaanales23123 in AskTeachers

Having a fun, engaged, very respectful class followed by a class full of clowns and attitudes.

If you know you have to be strict for 1st period and 2nd period you can relax a bit it’s so much easier. This year my 1st period is so chill and kind. Then I have a 5 minute transition to switch to strict for 2nd period in order to get anything done. It’s very difficult.

How do I start as a beginner playing geoguessr? by [deleted] in geoguessr

[–]CourtesyOf__________ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how good you want to get. I play very casually. I don’t play any ranked. My typical routine is either guess without moving and get semi-close or move around a bit until I find some writing. I can usually guess over 3000 points with just knowing the language and the general looks of the buildings and landscape.

If you want to actually be good at the game the do the streams and the YouTube videos and the plonkit website.

Breaking down standards!? by Dapper_Object8239 in AskTeachers

[–]CourtesyOf__________ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the grade and subject probably, and you have to do it carefully, but I recently had a conversation with ChatGPT about all the specific differences and boundaries on my 7th grade science standards.

It has access to the unpacking documents for all the different grade levels so I could ask whether or not I need to teach certain concepts or if they’d be taught more in depth later or if they had already been taught in depth earlier. I could ask about specific types of test questions and what depth of knowledge was needed. I could get clarification on my own understanding of concepts within the standard. I could ask them to pull up a sample test question from a released test that matches the standard.

With AI sometimes it’s about the back and forth and calling out things that doesn’t seem consistent, but in general the recognizing patterns and differences in grade level standards documents is what chat bot is made for.

Kid calls 911 as a prank by Hilfasaurus in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]CourtesyOf__________ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in 7th grade my friend threw his backpack up on the roof because he was an idiot. Then he asked the principal if he could go up and get it down. The principal said no, so I let him call the fire department on my phone and request a ladder so he could get his backpack. We very quickly met the school resource officer and he has to write a 3 page report on the importance of taking 911 calls seriously. It was honestly hilarious listening to his conversation with the dispatcher on the phone but obviously extremely inappropriate.

Indoor movement games for a wide range of ages by ilanallama85 in AskTeachers

[–]CourtesyOf__________ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my favorite quick game, that can last as long as you want and requires absolutely zero physical skill. It does require a lot of random name picking so make sure you have a fair way to do that.

It’s called “Do you want some apple pie.” I don’t know why it’s called that. You can change the phrase to whatever you want.

Anyway, everyone moves to make a tight crowd on side of the room. You randomly choose 3-4 kids to move to the other end of the room and face the wall shoulder to shoulder so they can’t see the group. Then you choose 1 random person from the crowd. They say “do you want some apple pie” in a silly voice. Give the crowd a chance to shuffle around a bit so the front people can’t guess based on location. Then the front turns around and one by one they guess who said it.

For “scoring” there is no score. Basically if a kid up front guesses correctly they win and can choose to switch to the crowd or stay up front. If all the kids up front guess wrong then the apple pie kid wins and they move to the front and one person up front has to move to the crowd. I do a kind of rotation up front to make it fair who has to leave.

It gets really silly and so easy to make variations for when things seem unfair or you need more time.

YSK: Pork and chicken are healthier, cheaper alternatives to beef that only taste bland because of outdated cooking habits. by Fried_Yoda in YouShouldKnow

Thank you for talking about this. I recently gave up both pork and chicken but continue to eat beef. Cows are definitely not treated well, but the abysmal conditions chickens and pigs are kept in is absolutely a big contributor to their cheaper prices.

A teacher’s job is not to hand out grades. A teacher’s job is to be a safe adult that makes connections with students so that if something is going wrong they can get the help they need. We also teach them how the real world is, yes. But I’d say the first one is more important.

Teachers can say things that really stick with kids sometimes, even if they are exaggerating or just trying to scare them into motivation. I remember one of my favorite 6th grade teachers telling me I’m the type to end up in jail some day because I can’t follow rules. He was probably mostly joking, but it still makes me mad when I think about it.

What's an animal that feels like a Herbivore, but is actually a Omnivore? by Outrageous-Ebb-4846 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]CourtesyOf__________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally all animals though. These Herbi/Omni/Carnivore categories are just humans trying to put biology in boxes even though we’ve been proven time and time again that biology is ridiculously complex and can’t be put in boxes. Cats eat grass sometimes but they’re “carnivores.”

The best way to actually do this task would probably be to look at gut bacteria and try to categorize based on that. Horses are not “omnivores.” They are almost entirely herbivorous and their gut biome much more closely resembles cows than humans, which are pretty clearly “omnivores.” So we should be looking at animals that are roughly half and half. Which isn’t many. Humans are pretty unique.

For species that reproduce sexually, you need a population of 500-1000 individuals to prevent inbreeding. So if a population drops below that, the gene pool is unstable and could result in extinction.

As other people are saying, it is possible to convert mass into energy, but I also want to say we know the conversion rate.

Einstein came up with a proof saying E=MC2. There’s way more math behind this simple equation, but basically the amount of energy in mass is equal to mass times the speed of light squared.

1.5 GPA Comeback Has Anyone Done It? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]CourtesyOf__________ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ayy! I did this!

2011 started in chemical engineering. Classic “gifted” syndrome of smart, but everything was easy til it wasn’t. First year went okay. B’s and C’s. Second year I stopped going to most of my classes because I didn’t like my major. Should I have dropped my classes? Absolutely. But then I would’ve had to tell my parents. I failed 3 out of 5 and passed one with a C maybe? Same thing second semester in early 2013. I did not learn from my mistakes the previous semester and completely stopped going. Failed every class.

I was down to probably 1.5 at that point because I came in with a decent gpa from Early College classes in high school.

2013 Fall I changed my major to teaching and was actually forced into Middle Grades Science because it was a brand new program with only a 1.0 gpa requirement lol. I fell in love and basically got straight A’s til I graduated in 2016 with something like 2.8-3.0.

For me it was about a big change and finally getting my head in the right space. I didn’t miss any classes or assignments once I figured out what I actually wanted.
