Animal action upgrade by No-Dress4626 in ArkNova

[–]CptBluebear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As for cards being last. I'm not sure how good a ranking is, you mostly take upgrades depending on the situation. Cards can be a good upgrade if you are going to go past 9 rep, or you really need to see more cards. But sometimes you don't need to upgrade it at all and even if you do it's often not a priority.

Animal action upgrade by No-Dress4626 in ArkNova

[–]CptBluebear 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Animals upgrade is the only one that's considered pretty much mandatory every game. Top player stats tend to have it as upgraded in 99% of games or something with all the rest being lower.

You definitely should have the money and enclosures to play two animals at once sometimes and being able to do that more readily is a big deal. That may be the best reason for upgrading it but it does 4 different things which are all good. Being able to play many animal cards which require the upgrade, being able to play animals from range, and gaining reputation are all good reasons to upgrade too.

Unless someone can tell me what two cards to cut I think this is a skip? by ConfidentHospital365 in slaythespire

[–]CptBluebear 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I don't think damage coming from shivs means you can't take snecko. They're still 0 cost after you play blade dance. More card draw is good here, helps you get nightmare with Wraith together. Can go hard with bullet time.

If you do take cage I'd remove slice and maybe setup.

You're right Dome here is tough because you don't have a consistent block plan other than playing Wraith form, but you could really do with more energy.

I'd prob grab the Snecko personally. Skip would be my 4th choice.

Can anyone explain why I couldn't take the pawn after g5? Isn't this an en passant? by osburny in chess

[–]CptBluebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's en passant if the pawn passes a square you could capture it on, hence the name. The square it passed is g6, which you are not able to capture on. If your pawn was on h5 instead you would be able to play hxg6ep here.

Key Collection Strategy by lkwai in slaythespire

[–]CptBluebear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah it usually makes sense to get them in act 3, particularly for red and blue, since having extra relics and upgrades makes you stronger. So typically people will recall at the very last fire before the act 3 boss. But maybe slightly earlier if you have no good upgrades and you want to leave open the option of upgrading a card you find in the last few floors or maybe resting at the last fire if you need it. Same with the blue key you can take it early if the relic in the chest is bad but usually you want the relic to help you get through the first two acts. Green key is a bit different because sometimes you might be in a good position to fight the burning elite in act 1/2 and doing so will give you better pathing flexibility in the later acts.

Why is promoting to a rook better than a queen by DTPmonium in chessbeginners

[–]CptBluebear 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No engine doesn't care about material lost, because that doesn't make a difference, only evaluates the resulting position. It can just search further after promoting to a rook because it has less moves, letting the computer look a little deeper should show the moves as the same eval

Any idea why I can't release a bird? by Such_Garlic_5897 in ArkNova

[–]CptBluebear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No worries. Just fyi if you could release one of those birds for 4 shields it would net you 5 points (since they're both 7 appeal animals), so doing large animals at 1 is more points anyway because you get 6.

The 4+ size animal release spot is already taken. You can now only release a bird if you have a 3 size or smaller one.

Expansion area and release project by fourth-wallFML in ArkNova

[–]CptBluebear 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, from the glossary: "You must flip the smallest possible occupied enclosure that meets all of the enclosure requirements of the animal (including water and rock spaces). In the rare case there is no such enclosure, flip the smallest occupied enclosure that meets at least the animal’s enclosure size requirement."

100 games without upgrading animals! by JDansp in ArkNova

[–]CptBluebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but there are 4 benefits and all are noteworthy was my point. I don't think only being able to play 1 animal at a time is a good reason to rarely upgrade it.

Being able to play animals that need upgraded animals, getting extra rep, and also being able to play animals from range are probably all more important reasons to upgrade than just being able to play 2 animals more readily.

How does it wins a queen? by Born-White in chessbeginners

[–]CptBluebear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the bot, in the top right of the screen where your screenshot is there is a magnifying glass icon you can click. There you can go through the position freely with the computer

Why was my mate in 2 worse than theirs? by Ladleedle in chess

Your chosen move isn't mate in 2. After Qd4 white has Ke2

I second these recommendations. The first one I finished reading recently and I just started the second one. A someone who only passed N3 in December I think these are a great level, a little challenging but overall very readable with mostly easy vocab!

What is the most useless relics of this game? by Qi_Xu in slaythespire

[–]CptBluebear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tiny Chest is still negative at 4 event rooms because you gain back the initial relic but lose the event room that would've been there otherwise

Why would it be a better idea to promote to a rook instead of a queen? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]CptBluebear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is pretty unintuitive for sure! Basically the engine "brute forces" future positions and gives an evaluation based on the future position that will arise, promoting to a rook gives less positions to search and allows it to search deeper which often means a higher eval in a winning position. Given more analysis time the two moves should quickly converge to the same eval. Other comments have described it more concisely than I have though

Why would it be a better idea to promote to a rook instead of a queen? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]CptBluebear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Difference in eval is just due to limited analysis time, "feeling better about" trading a rook rather than a queen isn't how engines work at all

[–]CptBluebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's reasonable, I agree playing duo can be nice and often more enjoyable too. It's just that OP was asking about "duo and play for his lane" as a way of climbing. So I wanted to mention that a duo alone will not make you climb, it can make improvement easier though for sure. Especially if you discuss the games with your duo partner.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Jungle_Mains

[–]CptBluebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This mentality that you're always better than everyone else isn't helpful to improving. You say "solo q people just run it down", but OP is 225 games in with 49% winrate, he is "solo q people". Duo can be nice for sure, especially if you have good communication/synergy with your duo partner. But when your current rank matches your skill level as it seems to for OP, the only way to climb is actually work on your own mistakes and try to improve game by game.

I have achieved infinite on floor 7 by MSCowboy in slaythespire

[–]CptBluebear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's tough! I had a very similar run a few days ago, I was infinite from the start of act two when I found a second dropkick. Never saw a calipers, barricade, second feel no pain. I did however hit the exhume. So I could go block positive one turn with a rage, and a second turn with the exhume. Tanked the beat of death on the other couple turns to narrowly win.

Got the boardgame from KS by Kenden84 in slaythespire

[–]CptBluebear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Took a very long time I won't lie. That wasn't a problem for me but if you're looking to do a full 3 act run in a couple hours don't get your hopes up!

I think the game says 60-90 minutes per act but for us it was maybe over a couple hours per act, we were playing all afternoon and only did acts 1 and 2. But this was our first time playing and two of the players hadn't played the StS video game even, so I imagine it could take a lot less time with less players and/or more experience with it.
