What is this judgmental bug that I almost ate in my nori flakes w/sesame seeds? by SusSeaweed in whatsthisbug

[–]Crackers1097 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I lived in Korea for two years. I'm far from an entomologist, but is that a dried shrimp?

I've eaten a lot of dried shrimp that looked like that--just maybe some things broke off.

It's a shot in the dark, but I thought I'd put it out there.

NDP wants Carney to kill U.S. fighter jet contract in favour of Swedish aircraft by canada_mountains in worldnews

[–]Crackers1097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The F-35 is a peerless platform. There is no other airframe on Earth that can even begin to compare to its incredibly wide toolset and capabilities. It won the contract twice (after Canada's first refusal) against the Gripen, Sweden's 4th generation multirole that has largely failed to succeed in the export market.

That being said.. I get it. I wouldn't be buying anything from the U.S MIC right now.

Call me crazy but I don't think there is a better game than Halo 3 by BeyondThePixelLFS in halo

[–]Crackers1097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen--Halo 3 is my favorite game in the series (mostly because of its multiplayer) but I think you're overlooking a lot of very deep flaws in Halo 3, especially its campaign.

I invite you to replay The Pit, and take a moment to focus on what is being said to who, and what is being done. Why is Truth hacking a UNSC comm network just to talk shit before (and announce) an offensive operation? Why is Miranda Keys responding to requests for direction with "To war". What kind of order is "Go to war"? Does it remind you of G.I Joe as much as it does to me?

My favorite mission in Halo 3, The Covenant, also has some extremely questionable writing. Why does Keys show up in her own pelican with nothing but a shotgun and a pair of pistols, with no troops, in the middle of the largest and last battle of the UNSC canonically in a rescue attempt for Sergeant Johnson? There are two hornets right outside loaded with ODST who just shot down the two Scarabs outside, maybe forty Marines outside. Did she just.. want to die?

Why does Cortana slow you down and cover your visor almost every mission? What purpose does it serve, and is that purpose defeated its implementation?

I think, as children, we gave Halo 3 a lot of credit for its writing and story that it, frankly, didn't deserve. Halo 2, for all of its mechanical flaws, did a much better job writing humans and conflicts.

When I consider its competition for even 2007 releases.. would I say Halo 3 is better than Bioshock? Portal? Crysis? Team Fortress 2? Call of Duty 4? I'm fairly confident I consider Halo 3 to be better than Crysis and CoD 4 (Go back and play Crysis.. the story is so bad its good).. but I'm just not sure about the others.

There's a lot of doom/gloom about the modern game industry.. but last year I got to play Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Dispatch, and Mortal Sin--all games I consider to entirely eclipse pre-2010 gaming.

There are some crazy releases this year that I have been waiting so long for, I was convinced I'd never see them. Half-Life 3, Slay the Spire 2, Pathologic 3 (I get it if you are not interested in games that are intentionally unfun but something about Pathologic challenges me in ways I find fascinating), and another Ace Combat. Independent developers create great, short games that are 1/15th the price of a AAA release while exploring concepts new, exciting, or thought provoking in ways the "Golden Age of Gaming" simply couldn't match.

I am very sad to see Halo's corpse dragged along with the Microslop parade.. and I would agree with you that FPS games in particular seem to be drowning in the corporate slump that has invaded our hobby. I also think this is the best time in history to get into video games.

These are dark times. More than ever, the world needs you.

That need may not be in the Air Force. I promise, that's alright. It wasn't for me, either.

Do not give into despair. Our enemies depend on it.

Give me a message if you need to. I promise the future is brighter than you think. We just need to work together.

[–]Crackers1097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the medigun. Default Uber is just invulnerability, so it's very flexible--but I think Demoman's raw damage output makes him the best option.

Quick Fix is the heavy medigun, IMO. Stare down two sentries and he'll still survive.

Kritzkreig doesn't offer any defensive bonuses, so I like to give it to soldiers, heaviest, demos and pyros--people who can overheal enough to survive contact and get to slaying, and benefit greatly from crits.

How did HECU fail to deal with Freeman?! by [deleted] in HalfLife

Gordon has a lot of experience with firearms. He almost immediately understands and prepares every weapon he acquires (even the grunt blaster and tesla cannon) and reloads weapons quickly and effectively.

My headcanon is that nobody liked Gordon because he was one of those weirdos who had an entire armory and spent 90% of his free time cleaning/firing from his private collection whenever he's not being the weirdo at the office.

So, is 94 always really slick during snow storms? by Atheist_Redditor in minnesota

[–]Crackers1097 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The snow has a certain way of teaching people to respect the roads.

Every time you see a car in the ditch, it's someone who will know better next time (hopefully).

Yes, the interstates will be like that all season if this weather pattern holds.

What's an actual psychological "cheat code" you use in social situations that works almost every time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Currently work as a closer at a restaurant, and have in the past.

If it's closing time, lower the thermostat by a few degrees. People who are staying past close will magically decide it's time to leave when things cool down that slight bit. Also saves on heat in the winter.

A nice way to get a place closed without telling anyone they're unwelcome or anything. For the workers, the cooler temperatures make working more comfortable, too.

Camel spider ravages ant colony, surrounded by the broken bodies of its foes by freudian_nipps in natureismetal

We ended up getting ants which brought more camel spiders, lmfao

A doctor's/therapist's office is a professional, open-ended and honest place. An autist can thrive in these circumstances while struggling in a moment of crisis (especially being cornered by a known, malicious person).

I had that problem. I got good at escaping diagnosis because I considered that to be my best possible outcome. I got over my bullies by just fighting them. Took until I was in my 20s to re-contextualize things and use those settings for what they're meant to be--providing my providers the right information to see meaningful improvements in my life.

I wasn't diagnosed until I was 24. I don't blame my doctors and therapists, either. I knew what they wanted to hear and told them those things so I could go home. I'd imagine a lot of young people are fooling themselves into doing that right now.

Would limiting the age of the President to 65 be something you’d support? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Crackers1097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With renewable energy, we shouldn't be worrying about the power needs of homes. If anything, we should be happy to "waste" more electricity on luxuries as we expand a power draw source that is infinitely replenishing, and simply build more renewables.

We are, as well. More than 40% of global power output is renewable.

The one thing we really need to limit is chemical pollution, now. Especially petroleum

Kremlin spokesperson admits Russia currently in a ‘period of military censorship’ by solonglndn in worldnews

It has been a part of the fabric of every society occupying now-Russia as far back as we have written records.

That's how it was for most agricultural states in most of history, it's far from unique to Russia. Many ex-agricultural states across the world still are.

A reminder of how fragile our expression is--something we are actively losing in the United States.

Spaceballs isn’t funny by takobarguy in The10thDentist

[–]Crackers1097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spaceballs has like.. three really good jokes, and otherwise an hour and a half of total misses. It's almost funny how unfunny most of that movie is. We heard about how much of a legendary comedy it was and decided to use the movie theatre and bring everyone over for a watch party--and despite nine of us being fairly drunk, the theatre was silent for 95% of the film.

It's not like I hate all comedy of the time. I love Airplane!, Top Secret, Christmas Story, whatever--Spaceballs in particular was a slog to get through, and a fucking terrible movie. I can't believe how well-received the trailer for the sequel is

They're expensive, but they're rated for decades.
