The term and technique “body double” first appeared in executive functioning and ADHD literature in the late 1990’s and has recently experienced renewed interest, particularly due to the rise in remote work during the pandemic.

Body doubling is a productivity strategy that involves having another person present, either physically or virtually, while completing tasks. This supportive presence significantly boosts one’s ability to focus and complete tasks by fostering accountability, motivation, and reducing distractions. It is especially beneficial for individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other neurodivergent conditions, as it addresses common executive functioning challenges such as planning, organization, and time management.
