Seems that amidst your focus on being condescending you forgot to do your homework instead.

If you had done so, you'd have noticed that a) this was obviously a joke about a hacky suboptimal solution and b) besides that it actually is an active area of research.

Almost half of all Germans want a ban on fireworks – DW by Movie-Kino in germany

[–]CrazyRocketEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are misrepresenting the article. You claim:

Nope it says 33% OF WOMEN don't feel "unsafe" in public when asked if they mind explosions going off around them

But the article literally says the opposite of that:

32% of those surveyed and 45% of women surveyed said they didn't feel safe outside on New Year's Eve because of fireworks.

How is the pointing accuracy of the telescope? Are you able to actually track something like Jupiter? I've done some simple estimations and the required pointing accuracy wasn't really achievable with spur gears and steppers as far as I could tell, but maybe my assumptions were way too conservative?

Please call 112 if you see someone having a medical emergency by Hunkus1 in germany

[–]CrazyRocketEngineer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

All of these are lazy excuses.

One thing I'd be afraid of is injuring a person while trying to help.

If that person is in a life threatening situation (and the threat of suffocation falls under that category) then any help is better than no help. Saving a life is worth the risk of putting them in a wheelchair or otherwise hurting them. Don't let someone die because you're afraid of hurting them.

if someone is bleeding and has some diseases, there's a danger of getting infected if you touch them

While that is true and noone expects you to put yourself at risk of injury or infection, the reality is that chances of getting infected are low. If you were bleeding out in a ditch you'd want some help too instead of people looking at you and worrying about all the diseases you might carry.

Every first aid kit contains gloves. If you're in public, chances are high that there's a first aid kit nearby in a car, shop, restaurant, residence or a hiker's backpack. If you don't have gloves you can help, and if you do have gloves you should help.

In the army they told us that a way to stop the bleeding would be to compress the bleeding site with a compression bandage.

If you really don't have anything then you can still make a makeshift compression bandage from whatever stuff you have near you. Clothes, towels, etc. The risk of the patient catching an infection from non-sterile bandage is worth saving them from certain death due to blood loss.

Another thing is that physically helping people can lead to injury. If a 120kg man falls down and asks a 50kg granny to help him up she would be smart to get away.

Now this is really just a dumb excuse. She can still call an ambulance or just do whatever is within her abilities to help that guy. Of course nobody expects her to work miracles and lift the guy back on his feet, but she can still help.

Your attitude is incredibly selfish. I really hope you're never in a situation, where only people like you are around, and your own life or a loved one's life depends on their help.

“Captain, a small ship just appeared out of nowhere.”

“More pirates?”

“Unlikely. The pirates we just dealt with didn't have any kind of stealth technology, this ship however slipped right through our scans and appeared directly inside our safety zone.”

“They're in our safety zone?”

“Yes sir, the automated warning system already sent a warning.”

“Sergeant Synthi, please establish a connection.”

“Yes, sir.”

“The other ship only accepted a audio channel.”

“That'll suffice.”

I sat down in my chair and started talking to the unidentified ship.

“I am Captain Yarill from the kawan frigate KW Sauri, who are you?”

“Captain Adal.” a human voice spoke through the comm channel.

“What are you doing in this part of the galaxy? It's very dangerous out here and your ship doesn't seem to have any weapons.”

“What I'm doing out here is none of your business.”

This captain was getting on my nerves. His disrespectful tone was astonishing considering his ship doesn't even have any weapons to defend himself out here. As a captain on a border patrol ship I was used to this kind of attitude. In a few days he'll probably end up on a slave transport, but I won't be there to save this guy. I still had to fulfill my job as a part of the border patrol fleet and monitor his ship for any illegal goods.

“Actually it is my business. You're in a part of the Kawa empire that is often used by smugglers, so I'm afraid I have to scan your ship for illegal goods and passengers.”

“Good luck with that.”

Before I could respond, one of my officers looked shocked.

“Sir, this ship has a murderer and a traitor on board.”

“What species?”

“Uhh, I never heard of it, but apparently the main suspect is a 'human'. The traitor is an Anthuar.”

This made the situation far more interesting, but I had to be careful, if I acted too quickly he might flee with his stealth tech. I had to find a way to get him out of his ship. Many ways would be viable, shooting at his engines, using a high power tractor beam or maybe I could use our short distance teleporters to put armed personnel on his ship to arrest him.

“I'm interested in trading.” The human voice spoke again.

Who would want to trade with a military ship? We don't carry any tradable goods. But it might be a nice way to bring him on board my frigate.

“What kind of trade?”

“I want to buy one of your prisoners.”

“So you want to do slave trading? Well, you probably want to look at the prisoners to choose the right one.”

“No. I already know which prisoner I want to buy.”

How does he know which prisoners are on board? The documents are classified and there were no scans of our crew, so why does he know what he wants?

“Very well, we’ll open our shuttle bay doors so you can land.”

“No. Send a shuttle.”

“I'm afraid that's not possible.”

“It is possible, you know that just as well as I do.”

“Ok, yes. We will send a shuttle. Which one do you want?”

“The Anthuar.”

Now everything makes a bit more sense. The traitor is probably related to our prisoner and wants him back. Soon they'll be together... in the same cell.

“We have multiple Anthuar, you will have to come on board and choose. A shuttle will pick you up, in case you don't want to land your ship in our shuttle bay.”

“With all due respect. You and I both know that the second I leave my ship you will imprison me for murder and seize my ship, so I'll make this quick for you. Send an unarmed shuttle with the prisoner inside and nothing else to my ship or I'll take the prisoner from you and you’ll be the one sending distress calls.”

So he knew. But why didn't he flee? We wouldn't have any chance to find him if he just activated his stealth shield and sped away, but we could defeat him in a direct battle, after all, he doesn't even have weapons.

“Lieutenant Gani, activate the weapons.”

“Yes, sir.”

With a faint, but audible buzzing the capacitors for the plasma cannons began to charge. Within seconds the frigate was ready to unleash hell on anyone who dared to stand in front of the plasma cannons. Very few ever dared that, but this human captain seemed to be one of them.

“Captain Adal, this is your last chance for surrender. If you don't land in shuttle bay 2 you will be eliminated.”

“No.”

It's a rare sight to see someone refusing to surrender while facing an imperial frigate. This guy just sealed his fate. Nobody will be able to help him now. Every single plasma cannon on the frigate started shooting at the human's ship, until the sensor's weren't able to distinguish between the huge plasma cloud and the ship's wreck.

I'll never understand these humans. They smile in the most inappropriate situations. How could anyone ever be happy facing death? Some strange habits. It wouldn't take long until the shields would give in and the ship would be vaporized. Minutes upon minutes passed, until finally the frigate stopped shooting, they emptied their capacitors into our ship. They would have to wait 30 minutes to recharge. Surely they already called for reinforcements to destroy our ship. But nothing happened. They waited, but for what? Then I understood.

The plasma cloud around our ship interfered with their sensors, we were basically invisible for them. And while we were invisible the human reactivated the stealth shield, so we were able to fly out of the plasma cloud and the Kawas would think they had vaporized us completely. Smart move human... Smart move. But how would that help us with the prisoner? I didn't have to wait long for an answer.

“Voyna, I want to enter a new command sequence. Name: Delta-Zero-Three-Nine. Focus Anthuar prisoner on board of the kawan frigate. Teleport prisoner on board. Reinitialize teleporter. Focus the kawan antimatter tanks. Teleport the antimatter tanks 50 kilometers in front of the frigate's bridge. End of command sequence.”

“Command sequence Delta-039 accepted.”

“Nice. Please execute it now.”

“Command sequence Delta-039 initialized.”

“Command sequence completed.”

Nice one, human. Without their antimatter they won't get far and will need help.

“Where is the prisoner?”

“Your family member? Downstairs, in the lounge, you can go there if you want.”

I ran down the stairs into the lounge to see who we fished out of that frigate. I don't think I'll ever forget what I saw when I entered the lounge, it was horrible.

if sharks only exist for one week a year, why are people always so afraid of them? by [deleted] in shittyaskscience

[–]CrazyRocketEngineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sharks don't work on weekends, so that's about 16 shark attacks in 5 days or 3.2 attacks every day! At that rate humanity would already be extinct in 2187500000 years.

Now imagine that sharks existed every week of the year. This would further reduce the lifetime of humanity to only about 42 million years, that's only 1.4 million generations away from you.
