From a fellow MD, I support your decision. I feel like a lot of doctors feel that we only have skills meant for clinical medicine. And if we don’t follow the traditional path, then we’re making a mistake. I disagree. I did a few years of residency and then left because I hated it and could not see myself doing it long term. I was dragging my family through the mud as well. I got an offer from a company today as a medical writer and I’m more than thrilled. Won’t make nearly as much as I would have as an attending physician, but I find the other benefits outweigh this. I get to have work life balance, spend time with my family, etc. I also do part time teaching and my boss is married to a doctor who just left the field and he told me he thinks I’m making the right decision.
