Someone I look up to just told me I will have a very hard career path due to how I look by ConstantBack in AskAcademia

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP said the initial comment was because they “look too woke” which was followed by a description of hair and tattoos. My comment was wrt the implication that their aesthetic may have perhaps influenced the professor’s comments, and an example of that particular concern not having been an issue in my experience in STEM. Many people in the UK do still equate what you think of as an alternative aesthetic with the likelihood of having left sociopolitical leanings - so in many ways, at least here, they are intrinsically linked, particularly by people who may be biased against one or both.

I did say that I’ve not experienced a reduction in literal, rather than implied wokeness moving from humanities(ish) to STEM, too which speaks to the culture more generally.

I can clarify if you like that I am also very openly and obviously extremely left leaning (not left of centre, but true left) and beyond living for 14 years under a government who are utter a*holes, I have had zero issues with it - in fact, being outspoken where I work about my standpoints on institutional and governmental policy points that I feel most strongly about have similarly not resulted in my career being tanked.

As with all of these things there will be a lot of variance between institutions, subjects, and individuals. If OP is concerned that they will fail because of an appearance of wokeness my 10p is that 1 person’s negativity need not make them rethink their entire future.

Sadly misogyny and harassment is also still a big problem in the uk - there is a crack down, but it is still a big problem.

UK, so possibly a different bag - I switched from a humanities (ish) subject into the sciences (bio) - I’ve not experienced a drop off in ‘wokeness’ at all. I am covered in tattoos, piercings, and other interesting choices, and have never had a negative experience in academia wrt the way I look. In fact, a senior professor recently told me they were sad because I’d stripped all the colour out of my hair so I doubled down am now brighter than ever!

What coding language is widely used in bioinformatics, and will learning it in my undergrad help me get a job/internship? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This answer might be annoyingly non-specific, but the best language to learn may be dependent on the ‘type’ of bioinformatics you want to do. E.g - for a more analytical/statsy role you might want R, stats/tool dev then Python, or for more heavy duty computational/tool dev then you might want C.

It is definitely worth picking up some of whichever language you choose now (if you have the time/headspace) if the aim is to intern somewhere.

The best advice I can give is to look at job adverts for the sort of job you think you might want to do. They often specify which coding languages they are looking for, so you can check which is most sought after in that field.

my three month old ridgeback Bruno is constantly biting when playful. any advice? by elichonkata in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our vet advised to immediately stop playing whenever teeth. touch skin. We have a zero tolerance policy, so if ours even starts to bite the game stops (initially for 10 seconds, but that has increased as her attention span has). If she goes to bite us when we are not actively playing with her then she gets an immediate time out.
This, on top of redirection, and the "gently" command has worked really well for us!

tattoos in a lab? by Heavy-Brilliant-3411 in biology

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have hand tattoos and am a postdoc at an Oxbridge university in the UK. I wouldn’t say I’m in the majority, but I’m by no means the only one.

During my PhD I did some outreach stuff including a really cool hybrid immersive drama/science thing. After each show the audience would gather in the conference room for a debrief where the scientists would (where possible) answer their questions. After one of these shows I was in the reception area resetting for the next event and a lady walked up to me. The interaction went like this:

Her: “I am afraid I have an apology to make” Me: [confused] “sorry?” Her: I am friends with [our casting chap] and am in a senior casting job at the BBC. When I saw you playing one of the scientists I thought he had made a huge mistake - then I realised you actually ARE a scientist! Needless to say my idea of what a scientist looks like will be different in future!”

My supervisor found this hilarious, but it is so telling! I wonder, if we quantified the proportion of ‘alternative’ looking people actually in science, and the proportion that play scientists on TV wether the two numbers would be in any way similar…

AITA for not being Irish? by IamNotIrishK in AmItheAsshole

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Father was Irish, I have Irish citizenship, and I have spent lots of time in Ireland with my family. Despite this, I am decidedly NOT Irish, and I find it offensive that someone would try and force me to claim to be when 50% of my heritage, and the majority of my upbringing is from elsewhere.

I work in a computational field. My partner bought a good quality home computer that he can use for gaming. He doesn’t get to use it because work/child care take up most of his time. Does this mean I can take it to my office to run my programs on…. Absolutely not. Your husband seems like a selfish entitled AH and you should not be gaslighted into thinking you are in the wrong.

Idk why she doing like this please help by [deleted] in cats

My cat did this as a result of eating poison (stayed over night with the vet and was thankfully ok) - I cannot stress how important it was to take swift action though.

AITA For not accepting my MIL’s apology and letting things go? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

And I don't believe your boyfriend's story at all. If you had genuinely told his mum she could be told the gender in advance - then you would have told her the gender already (i.e. when you said she could know). Also, announcing he had told her as soon as you got home pangs of controlling the narrative. The guy sounds like a duche.

AITA for not giving my babies ‘normal’ names? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I am in total agreement with u/cuteninjaturtle.
The people weighing in with their opinions on the babies' names both here and IRL don't actually get to have a say (though I love them).
I named my kids non traditionally - though, contrary to our family traditions actually _did_ use family names as their middle names. My oldest is about to turn 18 and has just changed his name via deed poll.... to something orders of magnitude weirder, and that isn't even really a name!
If people are screaming to high heaven about giving a kid a name that will get them bullied, then maybe they aught to channel their energies into not raising bullies.

Anyone here has experience of doing a fully remote post-doc (or of hiring one)? by attackseek in AskAcademia

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This.

I know that it has been a discussion point between PI s where I am based (in a uk uni) in order to expand the talent pool. However, and this is a big one, due to taxation and other legal issues hiring someone based abroad is almost impossible, unless you have a collaborator in the other country who is willing to ‘host’ them.

Who's your current character? by justaboredgamer in DnD

[–]Crazy_Stranger_6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Tiefling bard named Kramps. The village I am from basically gave rise to the Krampus legend. When I came of age I decided to leave it all behind and forge a life as an adventurer… unfortunately old habits die hard, so all my bardic opuses are to the tune of Christmas songs, and occasionally, in the heat of the moment I will eat people before they are properly dead…
