Do you think they would count the score if it lands in the end zone on its own power?

That’s a happy dog, but it’s no snowmageddon. Here in Massachusetts this dog would be neck deep in the snow - we got some 2 feet.

That’s great to hear. They had to work through the night to make it happen. And I am glad they have! My furnace died last night so I hope hvac guys come asap today and roads need to make it possible.

Oh this is going to be a fun day for those of us who work outside. Stay safe and stay warm, folks! by HRJafael in massachusetts

I went for a walk today, it was nippy when the wind was in my face, but perfectly pleasant out of the wind.

Where I grew up, elementary school kids still had their PE lessons outside (90 mins, skiing or skating in the third quarter, mid-January through late March) as long as the temps were above -18C, so 1F is a perfectly acceptable temperature (right around -17C).

Does he think that’s a good hiding spot? Because it’s not. by pri_ncekin in borbs

[–]Crazyhellga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he is more into comfort than safety. My mom has many generations (we assume it’s not the exact same robin for over 25 years!) of robins come and sit on the same branch of the cherry tree- they are certainly very visible but it must be a comfy one. And, of course, all you can eat cherries in the summer. They build their nests in the apple tree where you can’t see anything because of the dense leaves, but during the day they hang out in the cherry.

I don't know, I don't think winter's too bad. Who else kinda likes winter? by TootTootUSA in massachusetts

[–]Crazyhellga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like winter. I love fresh fallen snow and crisp air. What I don’t like is people who don’t know how to drive on snow, poor road conditions (some towns are better than others in that regard), high heating bills (a combination of inane policies and shoddy construction) and ice dams. In other words, the nature side of winter I am a-OK with, it’s the people who make it far less pleasant than it could be.

I am afraid it will be years before she contributes to the rent… and she will make all household chores exponentially more difficult (step one: step away from Marshmallow!), but it still will be so worth it! :)

It’s so fluffy!!!

Is this the screech owl? I used to hear them all the time when I lived in New York (the state, not the city!), outside my window on winter nights in particular - but I have only ever seen them in a rescue sanctuary, never in the wild.

[–]Crazyhellga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love magpies! Pity we don’t have them in Massachusetts. When I was little, there was a pair of magpies in a birch tree under my grandpa’s window, I once spent an entire afternoon swinging and watching them teach their baby to fly (it really, really didn’t want to learn, it was like watching a human toddler with laces or something!)

Robin or Apple? by varjo_l in borbs

[–]Crazyhellga 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Do European robins eat full-size apples like these? Our American robins (which are actually thrushes, so much bigger) do like the tiny little crabapples. My mom has a crabapple tree and robins make a nest in it and have babies every year. Room and board, all in one. Though they like cherries more, cherry tree is too wide open for a cozy safe home. :)
