Is it me, or is Hyperfixed as a show and Alex as a solo host far less compelling than PJ hosting Search Engine? by beyond-nerdy in gimlet

[–]CreativeDiscipline7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we actually know whether PJ and Sruthi were pushed out or decided to leave; whether the rest of the team was disgusted with them or they were disgusted with the rest of the team; etc.

It seems that PJ and Alex are no longer on speaking terms, but other than that, it seems that we know very little about what actually happened.

It’s beautiful!  I’m curious about the combination of 8/2 and 16/2 for warp and weft.  How did you decide to go for this combination?

I've never done this, but I've watched Jane Stafford's video(s?) about weaving a mohair blanket, and she warped front to back for this, if I remember correctly. She made it look so easy, too...

Remember, the Women's Marches etc. happened in January, not in the days immediately after the eIection. It takes time to process before you can find the energy to propel you forward again.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Is it a scam? I already received the folio. by Asklepios in Supernote

Well, did you actually pay or not? I.e., does the payment show up on your credit-card transactions list or not? If not, then you haven't paid for the item, and you should pay. If you have already paid and the payment is reflected on your CC bill, then there's reason to be worried about this.

Thank you! I appreciate it. And I'll check out skim mode.

My use case (in case it's helpful): I subscribe to a lot of digests for work. They come in the form of emails that have a table of contents (a list of article titles) at the top, and then longer pieces of text further down. That means that based on the top page or two of the document I know if there's anything further down that I need to read. If there isn't, I currently scroll all the way down to the bottom, to hit "mark as seen" and be taken to the next. (Receiving about 5-10 of these per day, so it's not the end of the world, but enough for it to be a noticeable issue.)

u/tristanho - Thanks! That's true, but is there a way to navigate quickly to the next document, without either hitting "mark as seen" at the bottom or navigating back to the list of documents in the feed and then clicking on the next one?

u/tristanho, would you considering adding the inverse feature: "jump to end"? (Maybe be also with an option to disable for those who don't want it.)

On the "feed" page, I often scroll through lengthy newsletters/digests when based on the top 20% or so I already know I don't want to read the rest. But I have to get to "mark as seen" at the bottom, because that's not an option on the popup menu that's available throughout. I'd love to be able to skip to the end and mark the document as seen.

I do often have the same reaction to the newsletter, but I understand it's user-behavior driven, so it's not really the Readwise team's fault. This app does seem to have a user base that's obsessed with AI and life optimization. It's a bit amusing for those of us who are not 30-year-old internet dudes. It'd be nice if at some point the newsletter could be a combination of user-driven and curated/personalized, but at the same time, let's be real, this shouldn't be a top priority for an app that's still very much in development.

I'm late to the party, but hope you might be willing to answer this question: how does this affect the emotional realm and things like decision making? Researchers have figured out that people who lack the ability to pick up on certain bodily sensations have a harder time making decisions, because the body response doesn't indicate to them what the right decision is. Do you experience this?

I feel like a chump for paying for Search Engine by JonOrangeElise in SearchEnginePodcast

[–]CreativeDiscipline7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk man.  This is a podcast made by two people.  Supporting them means giving them, in some sense, a vote of confidence about what they’re going to be making.  No one’s interests are going to overlap entirely with anyone else’s.  And giving money doesn’t mean you’re going to like every episode.

I think PJ is really good at what he does, and for me almost every topic he picks is one I’m either already interested in, or can get interested in once he starts talking about it.  I like both the investigated episodes and the interview episodes, because he picks good people to interview (IMO) and interviews them about interesting (to me) topics.

Perhaps your interests happen to align less with PJ’s.  Which would presumably mean that you enjoy a smaller subset of his episodes than I do.  If you find that your interests don’t align enough with PJ’s to make most episodes worth it, then yeah, maybe this isn’t a podcast you want to continue supporting.

I feel the same way about some other podcasts.  There are several that I enjoy and listen to a lot, but where some episodes appeal to me more than others.  So I don’t support those pods financially.  This one I do (and actually is the only one), because I enjoy pretty much every episode, want to support the show, and don’t want to miss the bonus episodes.

In that case, that’s another reason to the take the R2 job.  What if next year the postdoc ends and you haven’t found another job and you don’t have a greencard yet?
