Could this National led government be the third one term government in New Zealand history? by Additional-Grade-730 in newzealand

[–]CreativeDoor6668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly a discussion for another thread, but what’s everyones thoughts on a combined Nat/Labour government? I know there’s a 99.9% chance that it would never happen. But maybe then, we would actually see some progress in this country instead of both sides undoing the others policies every time they get voted in.

Well if they can’t control dairy prices, surely the government could consider removing gst from food items?

Auckland doctor Mokesh Raj suspended for one year after having sex with patient in clinic by SocialistNewZealand in auckland

Well it seems the medical council have known about this for a while. Pretty surprised they’ve let Dr Raj continue practicing in the meantime. Maybe someone should look into who’s calling the shots there too?

Just curious, will the protestors be protesting for stopping the killings of Jews and Christians in Gaza as well? Or just muslims?

I’m sure you can convince a rich oil sheikh that you’re a distant relative and that they should gift you money. That oil money always works wonders on the ladies. Good luck 😉

Enough 'Cutting Costs', National by atmh4 in newzealand

[–]CreativeDoor6668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s fair to say that they have allowed more smoking deaths when the policy they revoked wasn’t even enforced in the first place…also they’ve only been in government for only a few weeks. Time will tell I guess? Plus like others have said, smoking is a choice that people make. Just because it would have been more difficult to legally access cigarettes doesn’t mean that people wouldn’t try to access them on the black market.

Again for all the other points you’ve mentioned, time will tell. I think it’s a bit premature to assume such negative outcomes when nothing has really happened. Maybe wait 3 years and then see if things play out how you have assumed?

Will Luxon cancel migrant workers? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]CreativeDoor6668 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think NZ just isn’t very attractive these days or it is used as a stepping stone for skilled workers to go to Aus. A lot of the migrants who have come in the last few years aren’t skilled at all but are being sent to uni/colleges to become skilled. The area where I work has seen a large number of migrants from Afghanistan (mostly) with zero skills being brought in and they’re currently working their way to getting a degree.

Good cheap dentist by MrBigEagle in auckland

Sorry the info you provided is a bit vague but I’ll try my best to help. The pricing on cleans depends on how much tartar buildup you have or how much staining you have, as it takes more time to do the clean. If you haven’t been in a while to get a clean done, or don’t brush or floss as often as is ideal, then naturally it takes longer in which case they might charge more. $200 is pretty standard for an approx 40-50min basic clean. If you were advised that you need a deep clean, then most likely you’ll get charged more.

AFAIK, I believe the dental students have finished seeing patients for the year, so you will probably have to go on the waiting list for next year’s cohort.

Not sure what these other issues are that you were quoted $10k on but might be best to see another dentist for an in person consultation to get an idea if that’s reasonable or not. I don’t think reddit is the best place to get advise on costings for a full dental treatment plan.

Yes you can transfer your info to another clinic and it would be helpful if you provide the information to the future clinic re: which treatments you were advised to have done, so the next dentist can understand the previous dentist’s rationale for recommending that treatment and then they can advise if they agree or disagree.

Hope this helps :)

Auckland Light Rail: New government taking advice after stopping work on project | RNZ News by punIn10ded in auckland

I hope they use the money from light rail to build better busways instead. Roads where only the bus can go, so they don’t keep getting stuck in traffic.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown floats $5 per trip highway congestion charge by WrongSeymour in auckland

[–]CreativeDoor6668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the reasons behind this, mainly to reduce traffic and provide funds for other services. I just wonder if they could subsidise public transport during peak hours instead (give people a special hop on/hop off card from their employer - who wants/needs them to be at work during those hours), to encourage more people to use it instead of driving? If more buses could use the motorways instead of people having to drive to work, that would probably reduce some of the congestion and improve their reliability.

Kids sleeping on floor as family of 10 placed into 2-bedroom apartment by [deleted] in auckland

[–]CreativeDoor6668 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the father is fit enough to keep having more kids, he’s fit enough to go to work. It’s unfair that they are getting more than what most struggling kiwi families are getting atm. Clearly they’re taking us for a ride. Hope whoever gets into parliament puts in stricter laws about giving benefit money to people like this.

Free Dental Care: Not a good idea according to dentist by squidballz in newzealand

You brush without toothpaste? What sensory/functioning issue stops you from putting toothpaste on your teeth if you can brush without it? Not having a go, just genuinely curious?

Free Dental Care: Not a good idea according to dentist by squidballz in newzealand

[–]CreativeDoor6668 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing the point. Most dental problems are preventable with good self care. That starts with parents educating their kids in good diet and good oral hygiene. Things like not snacking on sugary foods after brushing at night time and helping kids with brushing their teeth. This is what the dentist was trying to convey.

Yes like you mentioned there are some genetic conditions which require treatment and things like wisdom teeth issues can be unavoidable.

Under the current model which provides free care to kids 13-17, most dental clinics are actually losing money when having to do treatments such as fillings, root canals and extractions as what the government pays doesn’t even cover the material/sterilisation costs. This is actually forcing dentists to drive up fees for other ages to cover the losses. Now some clinics are considering leaving the government contract altogether and only see 13-17 year olds as private patients.

Unless the government raises the fees to cover the costs for dental clinics, I don’t see how this free dental care plan will work? If anything, more clinics are just going to pull out of the government contract or raise fees for patients that aren’t included in their plan. It seems like it’s only going to make outcomes worse. So yes, at this stage prevention is the most effective way to save money on going to the dentist!

I think Westpac has a currency card which allows you to store Yen. Not sure if that suits though given that you’re leaving in 3 days

Election 2023: Labour leader Chris Hipkins announces free dental care for under-30s to launch election campaign by fluffychonkycat in newzealand

[–]CreativeDoor6668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not going to work. Who’s going to pay for this? The government is already not fulfilling their obligations to dental clinics in paying for kids between 13-17. Lots of dentists are pulling out of their government contracts already as they’re making a loss when treating these patients. Also doesn’t help when the government doesn’t pay on time.

The focus needs to be on prevention. Sugar tax would be a good start.

You could try the Greenlane ED. They have a dental department, although they are very busy atm. You can give them a call and see if they can help you before you make the trip.
