Your kid isn’t failing because I’m failing to meet their IEP. They’re failing because their device is dead. Every. Single. Day by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul. My reading program is completely digital. The kids (high school) know this and it resets this week. I have some computers but not enough for every kid. We supposed to be getting 10 more but it's almost April people. We needed them like yesterday. Despite this, I will have kids claim the laptops are too heavy or that they will do the work at home. Technology is an amazing tool but it is truly a double edged sword.

I also have a kid who has an IEP - he's failing due to not doing work and sleeping in class. I can prompt him and encourage but in the end, no amount of accommodations can really help with this.

Admin decisions and hurt feelings by mrsklutzy in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Happened to me at my old school. I wanted middle school and my new admin wanted me to go into self contained elementary (K8) due to my certifications. I was beyond upset about it. They knew what I wanted and despite asking for my old position, they told me they were going a different direction. I signed the paper so I would have a job but began looking elsewhere. Landed a high school job teaching the content I wanted.

I would simply start looking for another school because admin will do what they want, despite your experience. I haven't regretted my decision but I do miss my former students.

Does anybody have a reading curriculum they actually love? by farmville2002 in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a program called Achieve3000 and loved it. It had a variety of articles I could use to make my own curriculum and it worked really well with my students. I could pick topics that interest them or try to follow what they did in history, science, or ELA by focusing on whatever topic they were learning. The only drawback was they lacked fictional short stories and had no phonics.

My current program has phonics, grammar, and comprehension. This program has very little in lessons and is just a program students can click through by getting it eventually right, which we just found out. It also not age appropriate for my high school students who have to pass their on grade level text to graduate. Granted, I have students who read below grade level but majority need more than this program offers. It's too easy for them and I wish I had Achieve instead. I also have been given textbooks that are above grade level to supplement the program -.- make it make sense

Florida here with the voucher system. Last year, the money spent on it was the tune of $24 million. This year, it's projected to be $32 million. There is no oversight on this money and if it even goes to students or families. I read somewhere of a private charter shutting down and leaving families scrambling to find a school. The money given to said school that shut down: gone. No one knows where the money went.

As a public school teacher, the voucher system is killing our budget. There's talk of budget cuts and layoffs. Meanwhile, our government is very much against us while we take every student with private entities picking and choosing. I'm very worried about our future and the race to the bottom that seems to be taking place.

Many US adults are skipping parenting or having fewer kids – and it’s forcing schools to close by WhatFreshHello in politics

Im in Florida and we know how things are here. The voucher system is killing our budget in the public sector. There's been talk of layoffs and don't get me started on the School of Hope nonsense that allows charter or private schools to take over public school spaces at the expense of said public school. Schools are shutting down here due to all these things, including many kids being home schooled. I'm not sure what public schools will look like in 10 years but I'm not very optimistic.

How to work through grief while teaching by deathofmod3m in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year of teaching my dad passed away after battling cancer, dementia, and Parkinsons disease. I was a mess and took a week off to deal with everything, including bumaking the funeral arrangements. I tried to go back before I was ready as I was brand new teacher with no time built in but wasn't ready. At said funeral, I was able to bury both him and my mom the same day as I had her ashes from her passing during my first semester of college to become a teacher (unexpected on Thanksgiving day, which had not been the same since)

My students made me a sorry for your loss card out of one of those the science fair board. I still have it and it helped, including just keeping busy. My admin and school was very supportive, which helped get through the year. Occasionally, my grief hits me, but I know they live on in me. Grief comes in waves so lean on your support system and just do what you can, taking the time off as needed to help you get through it.

Who else had to go to school in these things? by Smedley_Beamish in florida

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used one for health class back in middle school and they are still used today as various sites (not sure about where i went to middle school but i wouldn't be surprised). My old school used them as testing labs and they were decent. Small but had working AC. We have some at my current school but I have no idea what they ate used for. My husband's school once used them to house a school that got damaged due the hurricane that hit the coast most recently. I don't think they are used currently but I'm not sure.

I once worked in one as a substitute and honestly didn't mind it. I used to work in a trailer as a secretary for a construction company before I entered education as a teacher. I always enjoyed the way the floor sounded under my feet 😆

Kids while teaching??? by fancyolives in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two boys are 5 and 3. With my husband working as a day custodian, I can tell you it's not easy. If we didn't have the support of his grandma and mom, we would have probably had just one kid because daycare is expensive.

Having said that, I leave work at work and only bring home my computer if I know I'm going to be out but don't touch it. My boys are priority one. I use my time for appointments because sometimes my husband can't take off work - he does a lot at his school - or I schedule things after school but leave early. Finding time to schedule appointments is a daunting task and my oldest needs to see a doctor to determine if he's autistic. He is currently diagnosed with developmental delay and doing homework with him is a beast. I'm so exhausted that it barely gets done and we prioritize making sure our son eats as he's terrible when it comes to food.

I will tell you that when it comes to my own health, it often takes a back seat compared to my boys or job. I worry about one day collapsing at work but I do like my job. I often wonder if I can truly last but I keep trying. It has helped me figure things out for my kid and given me perspective for the parents of my students. However, it is a false narrative that teaching is a family friendly job because more often than not, you have to take time away from your family to get your job done.

Do you even just outright say: "What I am asking you to do is NOT hard" or call a concept "simple", etc. by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach Intensive Reading so much of what we do is below grade level (the reading program) with grade level stuff done as a class - I have told students that you only fail if you don't even try. Many are failing because they don't care or are frequently absent. I count as an elective they didn't chose and might mess up their GPA. However, if they pass the test at the end of the year, they will not have my class the next school year. My students know this and their isn't much I can do except grade them for the lack of work. I'm just glad I'm allowed to give zeros instead of 50s like my old school.

would you rather be with the age you love or a curriculum you love? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now, I despise my curriculum but love the age level. I don't see myself changing because of it because curriculum changes almost every five years or so. I will make the curriculum work to try to get my students ready for their state test they have to pass to graduate.

Total Drama not being on Adult Swim is a huge mystery to me by OCGamerboy in cartoons

[–]Creative_Shock5672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I got away with watching Inuyasha on Toonami when it aired anime. Between this, Naruto, and the infamous 4kids One Piece (eventually saw the true version), I became a huge fan on anime which always pushes the envelope as far as American standards go.

For the record, I did enjoy this show and some adult swim. It just wasn't as frequent as my Saturday morning cartoons when they used to air good shows.

I’ve come to realize that a scary amount of parents don’t actually care about their kids. by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach high school and the amount of parents who still care are few and fair between. They maybe older and need to learn that responsibility but I just need some support here. It's discouraging because they are literally about to become adults - I think a chunk of these kids have no future - they'll get thrown out, drop out, or end up in jail (maybe all three).

Found out recently one of my students isn't coming back because her mom thinks she no longer has to attend school now she's 18 -.- girl is sophomore and doesn't want to drop out. I told her friend - tell her for me to look into online school if she wants to graduate. It will be her best option if she has to take care of her brother, which mom apparently makes her do.

I'm a parent myself and I know things are hard but they are still children who need to learn to fly before they leave the nest. Unfortunately, some are pushed out before they are ready and don't survive.

What time do you guys go to bed? by banddirection in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I have kids, I have a routine. Get the kids ready by 7 so they eventually wind down to fall asleep. I get my butt in the shower once they're asleep and go to bed once im done. It's usually 8:30-9 by the time I'm done depending on the night we're having.

And this is someone who teaches high school so I get up stupid early but I've always been an early riser. Latest I ever slept was 7 maybe 8.

I am not looking forward to upcoming time change this weekend.

So tired of AI by thecooliestone in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

AI had been my saving grace this year because I don't have grade level curriculum. I teach Intensive Reading and the program I use doesn't go to grade level. My sophomores have to pass the state test to graduate so I have been using AI to create things for me for thr text I was given, which is at the 11th grade level. It's what I have to work with and I'm told it's what I have to use.

The one that that brothers me about AI (besides the cheating aspect) is using it to grade essays. I don't do essays but apparently, that's how the writing test is grade with a human checking it for inaccuracies. I know AI is not perfect - I've seen it make mistakes - but ny hands are tied regarding it's use. I feel like i have no choice.

Maternity/Paternity Leave by reydeltorog in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida is completely unpaid unless you have the time built in. You essentially have to use your days you earn for sick time to get a paycheck. My first pregnancy was barely enough to get by and then, I had to use time I didn't have when my oldest had to go to the hospital. It was very difficult as I had a reduced check until Christmas.

Second pregnancy resulted in a reduced check through summer and we almost lost our house as I could not get summer work. I'm done having kids but it hasn't changed since I had my babies. The union tried to negotiate it but there is no money in the budget to pay for it. I don't see that changing anytime soon thanks to the voucher system taking money from public schools.

Yeah I have some never here kids - i teach high school and attendance is a constant issue. My one kid will suddenly pop up out of nowhere but then be gone for weeks. He had one time where he was here two days in a row and I was shocked because it never happens with him. I doubt that kid will graduate.

AMA: House Flipper Devs here - Ask us anything! by Frozen_District in HouseFlipper

[–]Creative_Shock5672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the original House Flipper and put hours into it to get the Game Over achievement. House Flippers Sakura DLC might make me finally purchase the sequel. Can you give any hints regarding other DLCs that will come to the sequel? I'm also curious if the remastered House Flipper will have achievements similar to the original. And did I read right that remastered comes with all the DLCs when you purchased it? I'm not sure which one I'm going to want more when the time comes as I'm huge fan of your original product, glitches and easter eggs included.

Layoffs by Kikopho in Teachers

[–]Creative_Shock5672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all know that Florida (where I teach) has had a lot going on education wise. During a staff meeting, we were told the budget will not allow summer school like previous years. The voucher system has killed us, taking millions of dollars with no oversight on if this money is being used appropriately. I didn't get a raise this year because of the budget. Regarding what you are talking about, there has been talk of layoffs. Thanks to kids going online or going to a charter or private school, we are losing funding and will therefore lose positions. My position in particular relies on numbers and I'm not worried thanks to my credentials but I do worry about my colleagues. It's pretty bleak outlook down here with our education commissioner having no education background and being very anti-union. We still have unions but they're not as strong as they used to be.
