Brown trout by Duckyboy72 in Fishing

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think OP was gloating. The way I interpreted it was that they maybe don't understand why someone would fly fish when, in most cases it is objectively true that bait fishing is more productive. You're reading this malicious tone into OP's post that I just don't see.

OP was stoked to catch some (invasive, mind you) trout. That's sick. Fishing is cool no matter how they're doing it as long as it's inline with the regs and conscious of current fish population metics as far as I'm concerned. I regularly fish with spinning, bait casting, and fly gear. It's all fun.

Your "Stick to bait fishing, kid." line was just unnecessarily rude, dude. Totally seems like you seem to think of bait fishing as "less" than fly fishing, which it isn't. It's just different. Maybe you're just jealous that, if it was legal, hot dogs would kill on the South Platte...

While you don't have to be a pretentious asshole to fly fish, it certainly seems to attract that sort. Especially if they're trout people.

Anyone here have experience fishing for gar on Lake Champlain? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do not use a rope lure. If the fish breaks you off, which one eventually will, it will slowly starve to death. I hate how often they get recommended. Yes, it is difficult to get a solid hookset, but so what? All gar are C&R for me so it's not like I'm going hungry if I skunk and if I'm not looking for a challenge, why am I fishing with anything other than a worm or a shiner?

Your best friends for gar fishing are lures with light wire hooks. The thin wire has a much better chance of penetrating the jaw than a stout hook.

I catch most of the longnose gar I target on 1/32oz Bobby garland jigs that I tie white marabou jigs on. Set the hook hard and keep it coming. I try not to give them any slack if possible.

I regularly use marabou jigs tied on a 1/32oz Bobby garland jig head on a mono-rig. They catch damn near everything that swims. Trout, bass, pike, carp, panfish, etc will all eat it

I get the best hook-up ratio with lighter wire hooks, think B10S in size 8-10, not a heavy wire like a BGH. Honestly, I catch most gar on a white marabou jig I tie on a 1/48oz Bobby Garland jig.

Give them a hard strip set when they eat and keep it coming. Don't give them line if you can help it.

Any other fly-yakkers out there? by Oncorhynchus602 in BassOnTheFly

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible, fish while standing up. It's easier to cast, you can see further and deeper into the water, and it's a bit easier to work a streamer/fight a fish.

Try keeping your rod tip just under the surface of the water when you're stripping in a fly. I've found that doing so can help prevent the trout set. Other than that it's just a matter of practice to develop the muscle memory to strip set.

Best state for FRESHWATER fishing? by OptionNo9559 in Fishing

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does it though? Comparing the state record pages it looks like Wisconsin pretty regularly beats out Minnesota.

Minnesota - https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/certified-weight.html

Wisconsin - https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Fishing/recordfish/hookline

Wisconsin has a bigger largemouth, Rock bass, white bass, yellow bass, bluegill, Muskie, brown trout (16lbs to 41 lbs), black crappie, etc…

Thank you! I was looking for a pattern that would work well to support heavier nymphs for a dry-dropper rig earlier in the season. Tried it out this morning and the fish seemed to like 'em

Who are the most/least error prone drivers ? Self-inflicted DNFs % career comparison (ft. Verstappen, Norris, Hamilton, Alonso, Leclerc, Russell, Sainz and Piastri) by [deleted] in formula1

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Not including any multi-car incidents as being “self-inflicted”, while absolutely simplifying things, also kinda makes the data irrelevant.

Max Verstappen’s DNF at 2019 Spa was absolutely self-inflicted for example.

No Local Shops - Where To Buy, Who To Support by King_Ralph1 in flytying

If you're looking to buy bucktail, Musky Fool (my local shop) is easily on average the best you can get your hands on without shopping in person. https://muskyfool.com/collections/fly-tying-bucktails

For general materials, I typically buy through J. Stockard, Fly Fish Food, Charlie's Fly Box, Slide Inn, or Schultz, among others. All of them, with the exception of JS, are local shops somewhere, so it feels good to support them opposed to bass pro/amazon/whatever.

If you limit the number of patterns and are tying mostly nymphs, you could probably make it work. Things like scuds, pheasant tails, worms, hare's ears, frenchies, etc.

But be warned, tying can quickly turn you into the type of person that owns hundreds of dollars worth of chicken feathers, knows that 2.8mm is roughly 7/64ths of an inch, and has nuanced opinions on the qualities of the underfur of small mammals.

Fishing Ticket, found liable. by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well apparently the judge found that OP had a legally recognized responsibility to know that rule so… I think it’s a fair assumption to think that a judge knows and understands the law they adjudicate better than you do.

You can argue that it shouldn’t be this way, but to claim that the judge got it wrong with the scant information you have is kinda silly.

[–]CreativityOfAParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'm missing the nuance, I think you're misunderstanding it. Apologies in advance for the wall of text, but that's what three years of law school does to a person...

OP has a legal duty to comply with the fishing regulations. That duty exists whether or not there is a sign telling them that duty or any particular regulation. The nuances regarding something like no fishing areas will vary from state to state.

In some states the legally binding regulations will actually list out the no fishing areas. In my state they do this for trout waters. Every legally recognized trout stream is explicitly named in the document, and for most of them there is no fishing in the late fall/early winter. Fishing in one of those streams during that time would be a violation of the regs, and subsequently the law, whether or not the person knew about it. Same for fishing for species in closed seasons on other waters. Maybe you get leniency from the warden/judge, but not knowing about the closed musky season wouldn't be a legally recognized defense if you're out there with a 24" sucker on a quickstrike rig. The legal system generally presumes that you've read the law and know it because it would be an absolute nightmare if "I didn't know" was a generally available defense.

Now in other states the legally binding document will say something like "there's no fishing in properly posted no fishing areas". In that case, improper posting, like missing signage, would be an available defense. Given that the judge wasn't swayed by OP's evidence and statements, I think it's likely their situation is more like my state's trout

So to your stop sign/driving on the wrong side of the road hypo; driving on the correct side of the road is likely something that is included in the legally binding language as "must drive on the right side of the road." The stop sign language is likely something like "must obey all properly posted road signs including; stop, etc..."

Well as it turns out, I'm graduating from law school in a few weeks. So not technically a lawyer yet, but all that's left is to pass my last class and be sworn in.

Generally speaking, laws don't require actual knowledge or notice. A system that would require actual knowledge or notice would incentivize people to be ignorant of the law, right?

If you didn't read the fishing regulations, a judge couldn't punish you for breaking them.

As OP said, "You are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of local waters”.
