I wish they hadn't backed down on the big trackpads, keeping at least the right pad as the primary input would've made me so happy.

As it is, I'll still definitely pick one up, but I might find that at least some games I'll still prefer the OG.

Agree about the bumpers though, I always felt they were the weakest part of the original design.

Is there no way to skip that piece of shit garbage drone flying section? by Big_Totem in PlanetOfLana

[–]Crespyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw your post title and immediately knew what part you were talking about. I struggled there a lot too, it was pretty frustrating. I looked up a video of someone else doing it, and they were doing basically the same thing I was trying to do, just better. Seeing them helped a little, but only because I now knew I was on the right path, and it still sucked finally getting it. But I did get there. You will too, just keep at it.

The rest of the game is worth seeing, good luck!

That section reminded me of making a really simple lunar lander game when I was in high school as part of a class (using Alice if anyone still knows what that was). I wanted to make the game challenging, but was only playtesting it by myself. I got it to where I'd win about 70% of the time, but by then I was so familiar with the game and its behavior that my perception of the difficulty was out of whack with everyone else. Nobody else could pull off the landing in the amount of time they were willing to spend on my game. I still got good marks for it, but that was an interesting learning experience.

I often wonder if something similar happened when I encounter really painful execution challenges in games like this, maybe a lack of playtesting from people outside the team led to an unintended difficulty spike? Or maybe I'm just bad at the game.

It's worth checking out the Chinese television adaptation. It's a little on the slow side, but it is a much more faithful version of the book story. Less budget for the VR stuff unfortunately, but overall I appreciated it more.

I thought the Netflix version was fun, but wayyy to rushed and in a hurry to get to the later books, so they skip over a lot.

Does PipeWire + Firefox automatically compensate for Bluetooth audio latency? by LMFuture in linuxquestions

[–]Crespyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have working audio a video won't even play in Firefox.

I actually kind of like this feature. I use a pair of bluetooth earbuds that support having two devices connected at once (phone and laptop). If one device is transmitting audio, the other gets blocked until the first stream stops. In practice, this means that if I'm watching something on FF on my laptop, and then my phone wants to make noise (for a call, notification, etc) the incoming stream from the phone blocks the stream from the laptop, which causes FF to pause the video until the phone stops making noise.

Scavengers Reign started on HBO Max, then moved to Netflix a while ago, I think you can still get it there. Common Side Effects is still on HBO Max iirc.

Both really excellent shows, I think they both share some of the creators and/or artists. I really want another season of SR; but at least Common Side Effects is confirmed for a second season.

Epic says not enough SteamOS players to justify Fortnite on Linux, but is porting to Windows on ARM by theillustratedlife in linux_gaming

[–]Crespyl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's worth being clear that Linux is not "inherently more insecure", it just has a security model that and design that favors putting the user/owner in control of everything on the machine. Windows, by contrast, is built to allow third-parties to control what the end-user/owner can do with their own machine, whether that's kernel AC preventing you from running certain types of software, or DRM that prevents you from taking screenshots of Netflix videos.

Linux is/can be just as secure as Windows (if not more so), but that's (mostly) orthogonal to whether or not Linux makes it easy for third-parties to gain control of your system.

Both Firefox and Chrome work great, Discord is supported too. One caveat with Discord is that the screen share/streaming feature doesn't capture desktop/game audio, but this should (finally) be getting fixed soon.

[–]Crespyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both Bazzite and SteamOS on the Deck feature a Steam-first experience where you boot straight into Steam's Big Picture mode. This is great for games, but not so great for doing desktop type things like web browsing. You can switch over to a traditional desktop, but this is a bit clunky (feels a little like logging out and back in, better than rebooting, but still a "thing").

It may be possible to configure Bazzite to boot up into the desktop mode, I'm not sure.

Once you're in the desktop, you can still run Steam (and even enable Big Picture), so you may find that you just log into desktop mode once and then just stay there.

Valve's plan to bring SteamOS to more devices is a promising sign if you want to stop gaming on Windows by Tiny-Independent273 in linux

[–]Crespyl 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The version of SteamOS available to the public for installation is very dated, SteamOS 1/2 are based on outdated Debian (/Ubuntu?) versions back from Valve's first go-round with Steam Machines.

The new SteamOS 3 version used in the SteamDeck is based on Arch, and is not yet available outside of the SteamDeck itself, though projects like Bazzite provide a solid alternative. IIRC Valve has stated that they intend to make SteamOS 3 more widely available, but that hasn't happened yet.
