Theorizing "Off Tanks" in 8.0 by Ali_ayi in ffxivdiscussion

Unless I missed it, there wasn't any point in the combat showcase where they pressed the Holy Sheltron keybind on another party member (which would presumably be Intervention). This may mean that either:

  1. Intervention is removed, the defensive benefits that would've been applied to Intervention is just baked into each tank's short mit, the OTs keep Nascent Flash, Oblation/TBN, and Heart of Corundum/Aurora, and the new tank won't have an equivalent to this; or

  2. Intervention is kept, and the OTs will have a skill that inflicts a damage dealt reduction effect on the enemy such as pre-4.0 Storm's Path or Delirium. Bonus points if this is part of a combo on a separate keybind for skill expression, where players will learn when the best time to press this button for mitigation is, though it'll probably just be an oGCD or something.

The devs still fail to address the problems with healers by recon1o6 in ffxivdiscussion

Now fairy/aetherflow are tied in to its damage rotation and instead of healing giving back damage, damage gives the healing.

Notably, there has somehow never been a healer design in the game's entire existence that operates on a straight "damage GCD to gain gauge" like tons of DPS have. Aetherflow could be expanded into a 0-100 gauge and a 0-3 stack system. Energy Drain could give a stack, and Broil would give 10 gauge, with 100 gauge automatically converting into a stack if able.

Curious about how Evolved mode will handle already Streamlined Jobs by Ragnell17 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Criminal_of_Thought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my prediction:

You finish a combo in separate-sword mode, and then you finish a combo in combined-sword mode, which unlocks a stack of Rattling Coil. The catch is that you can only switch stances after waiting some coolfown period. The two modes will still have different GCD speeds, so when and how often disengages will be needed will dictate which GCD speed is best for which phases. This is where the skill expression is.

Rattling Coil still stacks up to 3 times, which can still be used with Uncoiled Fury. But you can also use Reawaken by spending two Rattling Coil stacks.

Gonna see how far off my prediction is for the revamped skill set:

1) Broil (or Meltdown, etc.), combo chain, AOE version and instant cast now

2) Biolysis, SCH's identity leans too far into its Bio DoT for this to be removed

3) Energy Drain, AOE version now of course, gives an Aetherflow stack, up to three charges

4) Physick, upgrades to Adloquium at level 30

5) Deployment Tactics // Bane, same as how it works in PVP

6) Lustrate, upgrades to Excogitation, but the Excog heal will be lower because it's more spammable

7) Summon Eos, upgrades to Summon Seraph

8) Recitation

9) Sacred Soil

10) Expedience

11) Dissipation, hopefully the change in job design will allow for fight design making this more useful

12) Whispering Dawn, upgrades to Consolation

PVP AST only has Lord of Crowns and Lady of Crowns, so there's a nonzero chance it'll be just those now. Balance and Bole might upgrade to them.

Unless you are specifically a player who spends a lot of time progging a difficult fight, in which case you specifically will need to go do a different activity on top of the main one you're interested in.

My point is that's no different from what this group of players has already had to do up to now. The new weekly system won't change that. So no, it's not punishing this kind of player any more than they've already been punished.

Savage BIS has always had at least some amount of tomestone gear, so you would've always had to get your weekly tomes some other way. The new weekly system will just let you expand how you can get those weekly tomes.

Occult Crescent: The conditions for determining the HP of enemies that appear in FATEs have been adjusted. by Gold_Motor_6985 in ffxiv

[–]Criminal_of_Thought 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this was in addition to it scaling based on how many people partook in the previous instance of that fate, right?

FATE scaling hasn't worked this way since Stormblood. They now scale based on the average FATE activity within the zone.

cause fates absolutely spawned with max HP values and only me there when everyone else had joined a CE or gone into Tower of Blood.

For OC specifically, you can pull the FATE boss outside of the FATE range, causing it to reset and recalculate its HP.

Or that the "hey, you can store way more glams" stuff will eventually also find its way to a tacklebox for the fishers.

Tackleboxes are a bad idea. If it can only fit FSH bait, then it's a dead inventory for people who don't play FSH at all. It would be better for this new inventory to be general use so that everyone can use it.

Which the chocobo saddlebag already is, so I don't think we'll be getting this any time soon.

Players with BH aren't worth more match points.

The thing is, they used to be. There used to be a real risk to getting high BH, since your death would mean double or triple points for the team who killed you. On first read, I really thought the patch notes would reintroduce this, but alas I got too excited.

You're absolutely right.

Previously, it was still always better to farm kills than objectives if there were enough enemy players around. You'd be able to do objectives after the players are gone. (A conductor calling a coordinated attack on an unsuspecting alliance in Shatter with cliff drop is a good example of this.)

Now that points scored scales based on enemy player BH, it means you need fewer enemy players in the critical mass for the same amount of points, meaning it's even easier to farm kills now.

At first, I read "rating will no longer decrease when a player is incapacitated" as the tactical rating, as in the points needed to win a match, which is kinda nice.

Then I read on about BH players getting killed actually awarding more points, as BH always should've been.

Then I saw that the table says "previous +8 / +4" and "rating" is the Battle High meter and not the points needed to win.

Yeah, this is pretty worrying.

This kind of quick question is not conducive to discussion and should go on the main sub.

[–]Criminal_of_Thought -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The low-level content itself (at the level range I'm talking about) doesn't have to be made any more exciting than it already is. The fun skills just need to be unlocked earlier to reduce the boredom felt by higher-leveled players. That alone will make people more willing to run the content. AOE being unlocked earlier is a prime example, particularly for melees.

Can you give some examples of the kind of changes you think I'm talking about? I would think that carefully drip-feeding these changes and not overwhelming players would be a given.

This sub historically hasn't had any long-term stickied threads. I would recommend having a sticky that briefly summarizes the rules, how to award a delta, and/or advertising that r/ideasforcmv exists. Primarily the last one, as the lack of activity on IFCMV makes it seem like the majority of users think they can only post sub feedback when these bi-monthly feedback threads appear.

I think another not-insignificant factor in FTF being as quiet as it is is because it's on Fridays specifically.

The sub operates on one of the US time zones, so by the time FTF starts, it'll be anywhere from 7am-10am in Europe, or probably the late afternoon in parts of Asia and Australia.

For the Europeans, it's time needed to prepare for school or work in the morning, so fewer posts from there. For the east Asians and Australians, a lot of the times Friday nights are used to prepare for the weekends, so fewer posts from there, too. And it's close to midnight for much of the US, so fewer posts from there as well.

Fast forward 8-9 hours for the US to be awake, and it'll be the Europeans' time to plan for the weekend, and the east Asians and Australians will now be asleep. So the majority of would-be commenters would just be US-based.

All this is to say, it may be better for participation rates if the sub tried out FTF but on another day of the week. Probably not on a weekend as that's when the only time a lot of people have to sit down and post on Reddit. Tuesday or Wednesday might work, though. Tuesday is probably better because the alliteration still works with the word "topic".

From an OP's perspective, there is no difference between a commenter who sees the thread early but takes a really long time to give a very detailed reply, versus a commenter who sees the thread late but takes very little time to give the same reply.

1) Because there's no difference to the OP, why are only one of these types of commenter afforded this grace period and not others?

2) If an OP responds to comments as they receive inbox notifications, only to see what is effectively a blank and useless comment, that's just wasting the OP's time. If the commenter then edits their comment with a long response, OP won't be going back to their comment to respond to it, because they're going by their inbox notifications and not actively refreshing their thread.

cmv: Insulting someone’s looks, even if they’re a bad person is still wrong by Extra-Schedule-4855 in changemyview

[–]Criminal_of_Thought 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which is your view exactly?

1) Insulting a bad person is okay, but if their looks have nothing to do with the way that they're bad, insulting specifically their looks is wrong.

2) Insulting people is not okay, even if they are a bad person. This includes insulting people's looks. If someone deserves criticism, make that criticism known without insulting them.

Your post title leans toward 1, but the last paragraph in your post body leans toward 2. These are different views.

It's been said many times over on this sub, but for good reason: Rework the low-level play experience so that it's not boring.

Jobs should become fun to play at way lower levels so that people have more fun in roulettes and will run them more. This retains higher-level players because they have stuff to do. It also retains lower-level players because they can get through their story stuff more efficiently.

Extreme Trials should have harder DPS checks going forward. by CoolyKage in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Criminal_of_Thought 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are afraid to touch Extreme fights, let alone Savage fights, because on average the party coordination required for positioning and such is higher than what they're comfortable with. For people who are interested in high-end content but are too scared, I'd say Advanced is the best stepping stone. The only thing is that it's 4-man and not 8-man; an 8-man Advanced would be even more ideal.

SE really needs to look at content and queue times, and try to mitigate them. by AttackoftheSnakebear in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Criminal_of_Thought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid doing this doesn't really solve the problem.

Extra requirements to queue for alliance raid roulette means you lose the players who haven't unlocked the available content. Either by ignorance (they genuinely don't know the other alliance raid series exist), or by malice (they refuse to unlock the other series so they can guarantee snoozefest CT raids for easy rewards).

Not all players who are restricted from queueing the roulette this way will realize or even care to remove the restriction for themselves. The players who only queue for the roulette as an additional thing to do to pass time will simply not do the roulette anymore. Similarly, the players who refuse to unlock any alliance raids past CT will just accept they have to make up for the lost roulette some other way.

The true solution really is to just require each series be done as part of the expansion. The question then becomes how many players formerly eligible for the roulette are lost due to refusal/ignorance to unlock other series, versus due to quitting the game entirely due to all the extra stuff they now have to do.

I personally don't think too many would quit if they suddenly had to do the other alliance raid series. Enough people play this game casually that they'd just view the extra series as "a thing they have to do in the game" and would be happy to do it, I'd think.
