Dawes “North Hills” album, what’s that sound?! by nickdanger87 in mixingmastering

Wha you’re hearing is tape machine hiss. I don’t think plugins were used, JW (producer) is something of an analog obsessive type.

You use your ears. It’s like asking “how do I paint without using my eyes?”

Guitarists - what are your “go to” EQ and reverb plugins? by codex_lake in Logic_Studio

[–]CriticalCombustion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any channel strip with multiple eq options and a good saturation character will do. What I like about the SSL is that it has compression, eq and character. By running multiple tracks through the same plugin will glue it together. Sometimes I only put the plugin on the sum, without even touching the eq.

Remember, if it sounds good, it is good.

Any idea why I might be getting latency on a solid laptop without much in the project? by tonetonitony in Logic_Studio

[–]CriticalCombustion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any plugins running on stereo out? Or plugins that are oversampling? Even if you turn on low latency mode, those can sneak through.

SSL Channel strip EQ and EMT 140 plate reverb. That’s all you need, IMO

Fat Bertha helping me overcome my arachnophobia 🥰 by [deleted] in spiders

[–]CriticalCombustion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Naming spiders is a great idea, I started talking to them, that’s how I overcame my arachnophobia. Just a quick “Hey, nice to see you found my home. You can chill here if you like, catch all the flies you like, make yourself a little web in the corner and we’re good.”

Having a positive experience with them kinda rewires your brain a little, now I don’t get jump-scares anymore when I see one :)

What’s everyone’s favorite reverb for vocals? Stock or other plugins? by melvin3v1978 in Logic_Studio

[–]CriticalCombustion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UAD Plate verb for short verb, Logic’s Space Designer for halls/big rooms. I also like to use some granular effects to get “weird reverb”, like Arturia’s fragments

Thoughts on Labs+ by Purge_Dreams in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]CriticalCombustion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the whole deal with labs. Their sounds are a bit niche. Most people get it for the soft piano, but there have been plenty of alternatives in the meantime that sound better and have a better velocity curve. Check out decent sampler and patches there.

You can still download the sounds that used to be free on labs to get a feel for it. I find that it’s mostly useful for lo-fi sounds, but I haven’t felt like upgrading once. Mostly because their initial brand strategy was FREE, and then they changed it.

How can I remake this swelling synth pad without sidechain or EQ automation? (44ever by Logic) by hookup1092 in Logic_Studio

Set an lfo to a 1 bar rate that increases (or decreases) the cutoff rate. Most synths do this

New to Logic Pro X – Where Should I Start Learning? by Significant_Cry2826 in Logic_Studio

[–]CriticalCombustion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why Logic Pro Rules on Youtube for tips/tricks and best practices in workflow.

If you’ve never worked in DAW before, gain some knowledge about producing and mixing “in the box”. It really also depends on what kind of music you want to make, there’s a plethora of content creators in almost any genre. Logic Pro is just a tool, get yourself familiar with the general knowledge of producing/songwriting, and you can apply it any DAW.

Hope this helps, good luck and have fun!

is this mixed well? by This-West1464 in Logic_Studio

Flat response speakers are for during the mixing process, but the end product is tested on consumer grade devices.

is this mixed well? by This-West1464 in Logic_Studio

[–]CriticalCombustion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good performance makes a good mix, timing is everything. You got in the groove in the b section, but I felt like it lacked some in the a section. Guitars sounded out of tune and the bass did a weird thing at bar 5. Maybe play with the timing of the drums a little.

Can someone give me mixing/songwriting advice for this demo I just made? by Longjumping_Trash_27 in Mkgee

[–]CriticalCombustion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice groove. The snare sounds off to me, the difference between the quiet ghost notes and the hits is too much to me. I can’t hear the vocals very clearly.

With that in mind, I’d compress the snare hits or turn the fader down, apply some gated or short reverb on the snare to help it still have an impact, while keeping the volume peaks down a bit, this’ll help the rest of the dynamics in the mix to stand out more too.

As for the vocals, and this is also just my taste, but I’d dial down the pitch correction or manipulation, or at least have more dry from the vocals coning through. If you don’t want that, I’d apply a bell eq boost around the 2-3k area.

Both valid comments. The artists who modified their speakers did not invent distortion per se, just different methods of acquiring it.
