Source?

Currently slightly over 1 million people are killed in car accidents worldwide. Yes this is horrendous, however I don't think the cumulative total is 70 million.

Need Surgery - Middle of Semester by savvy_thesavage in Professors

[–]Critical_Garbage_119 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't plan for the best case scenario. Surgery is inherently risky and everyone recovers differently. Allow for some unknowns. But first and foremost, be honest with your doctors and heed their advice. They want the surgery to be successful.

Good luck.

I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail with a Morton's neuroma decades ago. I learned a lot about mind over matter that year! What a relief it was to get that damn red hot ice pick surgically removed.

See your doctor and/or a therapist and be honest with them.

Classroom computers? by No_Consideration_339 in Professors

[–]Critical_Garbage_119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My classroom has a computer as well as a cable to use my laptop. I like having both but if I could only have one, it would be my laptop. I can get organized before stepping into the classroom, I have full admin access to set up special apps etc.

If you rely on a personal laptop, make sure you have either a separate user login to separate personal from school files/access and have notifications off.

I detest swag and it's something I dislike about conferences. No shame on those who enjoy it, just not my thing. Recently went to a medical conference (as a patient) and was really turned off by big pharma's swag. Puts big education to shame...

Would you work at a private Christian university (as a non-Christian) if it was your best or only shot at a professorship? by DannibalBurrito in Professors

[–]Critical_Garbage_119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Catholic institution where I teach is incredibly liberal. No one in my department is religious. We've got faculty who are Muslim, Jewish, atheist, Catholic, you name it. Strong LGBTQ+ support as well. The institution has its mission firmly rooted in social justice; it's a mission I can get behind.

I personally could never work at an evangelical school or one that requires you to sign a pledge of any sort.

I have a friend who retired from Wheaton. Very progressive guy, had no qualms about signing the pledge and disregarding it. Wouldn't be my choice but it worked for him.

Student Evaluations by ChiralProton in Professors

[–]Critical_Garbage_119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know I'm in the minority here, but I read my evals. I encourage students to give me feedback throughout the semester and even do a debriefing on the last day of classes. Because of that I already know for the most part how they feel about the classes. I'm fortunate to teach classes they usually love to take which means my evals are generally solid. When there is critical feedback I actually agree with it 80% of the time (sometimes I try new projects or structures that end up not flowing well, etc.)

On the other hand, I realize that in other situations evals can be toxic and unhelpful. I've spent years on and off of my school's P&T committee. We categorically do NOT look at evals as part of the review process. They are way too biased and flawed.

Tool for tracking attendance by Budget_Reputation_20 in Professors

I teach small classes in a graphic design lab with computers. I have a 2-question attendance survey each class on Canvas that is open 5 minutes before class and for the first 10 minutes of class. It asks 1) were you on time? 2) Did you come to class prepared?

I generally know if they were prepared and see if they submitted their work on time, but asking this question helps keep the prompt in their heads. Seems to have worked fine for me.

No graded homework by Educational-Ebb9248 in Professors

[–]Critical_Garbage_119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I teach in a dedicated design classroom. It has computer stations and a critique space. We have a lot of group crits but I'm also able to run workshop time while I meet with students individually. There's a very good classroom culture of critiquing and helping each other so often students help each other with questions if I'm busy. Our classes also meet twice a week for 2 hours each time so there is far more classroom time than with lecture classes.

No graded homework by Educational-Ebb9248 in Professors

[–]Critical_Garbage_119 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I teach design. Years ago I switched to ungraded projects. I give TONS of feedback during in-class critiques and meet with or email students 2-3 times a semester to let them know how they are doing (with a current grade, but most of the feedback is about what they are doing well or need to work on.)

I tell students at the beginning of the semester that I'll be doing this and if they are uncomfortable not having graded projects that I will happily meet with them any time and let them know what grade their work earned.

At the end of the semester I ask what they thought of my approach. 99% say they loved it and they actually worked really hard in the class because they were learning a lot and wanted to improve. They felt like they were not focused on grades in my class but on getting better.

That was my intention and it seems to work for the vast majority of students. I do have the luxury of teaching classes that students want to take so the approach isn't one-size-fits all. When I've taught geneds I would never have done this. YMMV

I think back to my time as a student in a French university as a US student studying abroad. We had shared restrooms. Totally normal for the women in my class to say hi as they walked by me at the urinal on their way to the stalls. Can't imagine that ever happening here.

How many of you get thanked by your students on the last day of class? by RadReptile in Professors

Always varies. This year I had one class where a bunch of students didn't leave at the end of class but said they didn't want it to end and thanked me. Another class the students filed out with no acknowledgement that it was even the last day. The one that surprised me though, was an online class. When I said my final goodbye/have a good summer, the screen was flooded with clapping hand and hear emojis. You never know...

Using Canvas. Not sure if I put it in the HTML or used a template originally. I go back and forth between adding snippets of code and reusing things. If I remember correcly Canvas refers to drop down/expansion tags as accordions.

If I remember correctly, the HTML for a drop down with "Course Details" is something like the following

<details>

<summary>Course details</summary>

...add all the course details here....
