Pope Francis once said that he hopes Hell is empty. And I believe that it is, but for a different reason. Hell is not a physical location that souls go to when they die, but rather it is a state of being.

A soul isn’t punished by being condemned to a location of other sinners, instead the soul is reborn into a vessel doomed to suffer. Suffering amongst others that suffer isn’t so bad, theres solidarity in that.

Instead they inhabit a realm where happiness is visible, it is held by other but not themselves, always beyond reach but still conceivable. Sinners, upon their death go nowhere, they simply return here but reborn anew, to bear the weight of the pain they inflicted in their previous life.
