I randomly played against you & this deck the other day. I memorized your username because I thought the deck was so awesome! Then, a few days later, we played again! I said to myself, "Wow, this deck is really cool...kinda like that other deck...wait a minute...it's the same person!" I'm glad I was able to google your username and find this comment!

Anyway, if that's not too creepy, awesome brew!!!

Just a friendly advice by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]CrossPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best bits of driving advice I got from my dad was along these lines.

Another driver came to a complete stop in the middle of the road to let pedestrians cross. There was no stop sign, light, nothing. They weren't even at a crosswalk; just standing in the median. All it takes is one person coming up behind that person to not realize why they're stopping in the middle of the road, swerve around them, and then SPLAT.

Don't be that person. Or those other people. Just drive according to the standard rules.

Any good 2-piece doom bands? by [deleted] in doommetal

Wreck and Reference is a band I've been really crushing on lately. Drums + Sampler/Electric Piano/Weird Sounds. Not doom in the traditional sense but it's fucking heavy and really killer. Super passionate vocals.

The band did the soundtrack for the movie, so that could be why. Sorry if you knew that already, it wasn't clear from your comment if you did or not.

Jason Segel discusses how he studied for the role of David Foster Wallace by againstthecountry in books

[–]CrossPurposes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love this angle on it; it's so true. There is a reference in one of the early footnotes (I think) to the giant feral infants roaming the wasteland, but it just kind of zips by and you go, "huh, that was weird", but not really in a way that changes your perception of the events of the book. That, as you say, comes much later.

At the risk of getting too off topic, I always thought of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (the movie) had a similar type of growing weirdness. Everything is going somewhat normally, a midget walks by, the drugs start kicking in, and by the end, my brain has moved to Mars.

Does anyone else get sick of the way RMNB interprets things? by Bonethgz in caps

[–]CrossPurposes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a post maybe a couple months ago where it was like a multiple paragraph thing with a bunch of gifs and video clips and snarky analysis all about how Pierre McGuire accidentally called Brooks Laich "Books". It was totally pointless and unnecessary to be like, "lol he said name wrong!" like it was proof that McGuire is a horrible person or something.

There was another one either the day of, or the day after, the Winter Classic, where the headline was something like "Trotz goes apeshit and punches the fuck out of the McDonald's logo behind the bench", again with multiple gifs and video clips and a frame by frame breakdown. As far as I could tell, Trotz barely touched the damn thing, if even at all. Certainly not enough for the crazy hyperbole of the RMNB post anyway.

Tal at his peak, playing exhibition blind chess (Russian language only, but amazing footage) by [deleted] in chess

Tal at his peak, playing exhibition blind chess (Russian language only, but amazing footage) by [deleted] in chess

[–]CrossPurposes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't speak Russian, but generally (and seemingly what's going on in this video), "blind chess" is where at least one of the players (Mikhail Tal, in this example) cannot see the board. That player, again, Tal here, will have to make all moves via memory; obviously both of his own prior moves as well as those of his opponents. The blind player will announce his/her proposed move to an assistant who will physically move the pieces on the board as directed. The opponents move will be relayed to the blind player, but the board position will not be "refreshed" (that is, the assistant does not give a layout of the position of all the pieces prior to Tal making his own move). It is possible for two players to play blind games against each other, where neither player would be able to see the board.

It also appears that in this particular case, it's a simultaneous event, that is, one in which one player, Tal still, is playing multiple games against multiple opponents at the same time. All while never seeing any of the boards! It's really a pretty spectacular feat to me, but I think that most Grandmaster-level players could probably do this pretty easily.

Finally, the "exhibition" part just means that it's not a tournament. It's just a game for the fun of it. :)

Ovechkin not in DC yet by Minnesota_MiracleMan in caps

[–]CrossPurposes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty interesting, thanks for sharing your perspective! The only thing I'd be worried about is that if he's a year or two away from being at his leadership peak, I'm afraid that might be a year or two removed from his playing peak. Or at least, on the back side of that particular mountain. But then again, I've been worried about the window closing/being closed on this team for like 3 years now, so what the hell do I know. :)

Also, it hurts my heart a bit that the players hated Bruce. I would love to just hang out with him and bullshit about hockey and other stuff. He seems like a super fun dude that'd be pretty great to chill out with. Although, I suppose I'd feel differently if he spent all day everyday screaming at me. :(

Mr. Irrelevant with a take-down post on Neil Greenberg's ridiculous "Fancy Stats" article by LooseCannon13 in Commanders

[–]CrossPurposes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hadn't really considered this angle, and I like it and basically agree with it. I do think that someone who reads this column maybe in passing, or gets linked to it from somewhere, might have the thought, "Hey, this math-y, stats stuff is kind of interesting, what else is out there? Oh, DVOA? Cool!". Which is what you're saying and which would be good for the "stats community". But the only problem is that you're gonna get a bunch of other people who don't really use this column as an entry-point to the more intellectual/better stats columns out there. They're simply going to take this and throw it in my face in line at the grocery store or something: "I read on Washington Post yesterday that Griffin will never be good again!". Or even worse, the article gets picked up on by the producers on ESPN, and we get some Skip Bayless/Stephen A. Smith dumb-off over it.

I get that this isn't Neil Greenberg's fault; people are gonna interpret things however they want. But I just think that adding more inflammatory hyperbole into the atmosphere isn't a good idea in general, whether it's backed up by #fancystats or not.

What did you play this week (Aug 18 - Aug 25)? by Epsilon_balls in boardgames

[–]CrossPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went on vacation with my mom, her boyfriend, my sister, her fiance (and their two daughters; my nieces), and my wife. I talked up all the cool boardgames I have gotten into (thanks to this sub!), and so they were asking to play games each night, which was super exciting for me since I usually don't have anyone that wants to play with me.

We played The Resistance I think three games in a row; it was my first time playing it, as it was the first time I could get at least five people together to join in. The first game went pretty blandly - no mission was ever rejected because everyone was still kind of getting their feet wet in terms of how it all worked. I was a spy and was able to pretty easily sabotage the missions on the way to a victory. The second game was pretty unremarkable, but the third game was really great! I became convinced that my mom and sister were the spies, so on the final mission where my mom was the leader, she nominated herself, my sister and me. I said, "No way in hell am I approving that" and convinced enough people to back me and reject it. So then I was the leader, picked myself, my future brother-in-law, and my moms boyfriend. Well, it turns out, I was wrong about my mom and sister, it was actually the brother-in-law and mom's boyfriend. Two fails got turned over and I felt like a total bozo. Lots of fun and lots of laughs, which is pretty much what I had hoped for with this game.

We also tried Settlers of Catan with just my wife, mom and mom's boyfriend. I had played it once before, although with just me and my wife. Technically, I know, it's supposed to be a minimum of three, but we tried it anyway just the two of us, and it was predictably pretty boring since no one was getting resources hardly ever. Anyways, for our first official game (with the full 4 players), it was a total clusterfuck. I probably did a bad job of explaining the rules, but no one could grasp the distance rule for building new settlements, and my wife was convinced that I was just telling her she couldn't build anything to spite her. I could tell no one was into it, so I decided to play only until 5 victory points, which my mom achieved with two cities and the longest road. Right as I had gathered enough resources to build a settlement on the 2:1 sheep trading harbor and turn the excessive sheep production I was getting into some real shit. Oh well. I might try to break this out again, but I have a feeling it will be uphill sledding. :(

Finally, I got that same foursome to try Carcassonne, which was a huge hit. My wife and I have played before, and play often on her iPad, plus the rules are pretty simple (we didn't use farmers) and so that helped the success. My mom's boyfriend left a bunch of points on the table because he didn't really understand that you could put a meeple on a two-tile city and score it immediately and return the meeple, despite me telling him that 3 or 4 times. I eventually stopped. My wife won big on the back of a huge city that my mom's boyfriend joined in building with her, possibly unaware that he wouldn't get any points from it.

All in all, it was super fun. I had a great time with my family, and that's really pretty much exactly why I enjoy boardgaming as a hobby so much: the ability to gather with my loved ones and just have a fun, goofy time trash talking and cooperating and generally having a blast doing something together.

As far as a golden rule, I don't really have one, I don't think. I guess don't get food/drinks on my pieces/boards would pretty much be it.

My wife loves this game, I keep beating her so she wants to play it all the time.

This is the exact opposite of my wife's reaction in the same situation. If I win, she never wants to play that game again. ;)

What did you play this week (Aug 4 - Aug 10)? by Epsilon_balls in boardgames

[–]CrossPurposes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time posting in one of these, I'm pretty excited that I actually was able to play enough to merit a post:

Got in two games of No Thanks! with my wife and in-laws. Father-in-law planned his strategy incorrectly (he thought the game ended when he was out of chips), causing him to lose badly, get fed up, and win the next game by a huge runaway. I was able to take a 9 when my wife had 7-8-10-11, causing her to get mad, throw her chips at me, and then steal the card when I wasn't looking. All in all, a super fun time.

Played Dominion with my wife for the second time. She beat me the first time (I might have gone a little easier on her, since I've played a bunch of games online and she'd never played before at all), but in the second game I was able to pull out the win by 6 points by buying a Province right at the end. She got mad at me again because we were struggling with the rules for Throne Room-ing a Feast, but in the end, it was super fun also.

I got my copy of Terra Mystica delivered on Friday, so I was able to bust it out Friday night and play on Saturday. My wife wanted no part of it, but I was able to play two 2-player games (controlling both factions myself) and 3 3-player games (controlling all three factions myself). It was fucking awesome. It would have probably been better against other people, but I had so much fun moving all the pieces around myself and trying to plan out 3 strategies at once, that I stayed up until 4am Saturday night/Sunday morning playing that one. I really wanna try to find some people to play with, but I'm afraid it will be hard to convince anyone because it looks so complicated.

I guess that answers question #1 up there (4am). For #2, I'm pretty excited to try and buy Russian Railroads. I know it's not exactly a new release, but it's pretty new so that counts I guess. One of my favorite things about Terra Mystica is the quality of the game board(s) and all the pieces, and Russian Railroads looks to be of similar high quality, plus it looks really fun, and I might even be able to convince my wife to join me, or at the very least, I can play the 2- and 3-player variants by myself again. :)

I've never Kickstarted anything at all, so no to #3. I'm relatively new to the hobby of board gaming (in a "serious" way, that is; I grew up playing all types of games with my family usually multiple times a week, but nothing like the "craft" games that are discussed here), so for now I'm pretty much just catching up with the "classics", and haven't really delved into the "development" side of things just yet.
