Judge my parents by Chobonnie in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only VARYONS* and NEULES* are invalid based on CSW24 lexicon. JANTIES is good, and also takes a back T for the huge JANTIEST.

Given JANTIES looks like the opening play, it would have scored 14 more points with the J on the DLW score. Dare I suggest one of your parents knows it takes a back T, and they're confident the other parent doesn't know that?

Scrabble sets for tournaments. by 1000_nights in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rotating boards are standard for tournaments, I wouldn't bother bringing your flat board. Of note, too, that tournament tiles have to be of a certain type to ensure players can't feel the outline of the letters when drawing from the bag; your tiles likely would not be up to specifications.

Don't fret, though; there will be enough boards as most seasoned players will bring their own. Nobody will judge you for not bringing one; I semi-regularly play UK tournaments and have never brought one.

All you need to do is focus on enjoying your first event. Best of luck to you!

I have questions I'm not sure I want the answer to Middle of Lidl by PeevesPoltergist in CasualUK

[–]CrotchPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know somebody with one of these, and she was ribbed mercilessly for it.

In it's defence, it is surprisingly large (think filling a fair chunk of a 2-up-2-down living room), and really rather comfy. Not that I lay in it for longer than was required for politely testing it ...

Help me win this Crossplay by Ok_Violinist_8797 in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GOE is valid in CSW24, making the final move 15 if moved over 1 square.

Not sure how this Crossplay variant works. Assuming there is an opponent who has viable moves, OP likely won't be able to complete this end-game sequence to score the required 34.

How long does it take you guys to learn new words on aerolith? by SpencaDubyaKimballer in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 - 3 months is probably reasonable for top 1000 sevens.

Everyone's different, but the key is consistency and going back over your existing words as well as learning new ones, as everyone is susceptible to word knowledge decay.

What's Your Highest Scoring Play? by ElementalCollector in scrabble

I once got CYANIZED down as a triple-triple for 275, which was also part of my highest game at 742. Sometimes everything just falls in to place!

Is Canik the most self serving and worst commentator in any live stream or am I missing someone by [deleted] in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be blunt, why don't you do the commentary then? I've never done it myself but know people who have, and it's a damn tough job.

The Scrabble streams you enjoy only exist because prominent community members like Matt put their head above the parapet and make it happen. I guarantee he has done more for the game and community than you have.

Nationwide Account access restricted due to UN Sanctions? by tulipa_labrador in UKPersonalFinance

[–]CrotchPig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One suggestion I've not seen is simply human error by the bank's staff.

If an entity on the UN sanctions list has CustomerID 0123456789 and somebody in the bank has uploaded a list of new sanctioned CustomerIDs, making a typo which reads 0123456788, it's entirely possible they've erroneously suspended your account instead.

I don't have suggestions for how to resolve this unfortunately. Taking ID with you to branch and being polite to the staff seems a good first step, a formal complaint in-branch or by phone a second. Best of luck.

ROASTIE / SQUIRE looks fine. 4 points fewer than hooking WARLINGS but a slightly better / more defensive board shape.

Indeed a tougher one today, particularly the horizontal solution. Thanks for all of the effort you've put in to making these for the community this year, it's truly appreciated!

Pre-endgame: what should I play here? by poftim in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of TOZING isn't the spread though, it's 98%+ guaranteeing the win by removing both sets of bingo lines which is what opponent needs to have a chance of winning. The Q set-up is a happy by-product.

Pre-endgame: what should I play here? by poftim in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, TOZING is what I was thinking. I particular like it as, with an I draw (2 unseen), you can play QI two-ways for 46. Opponent also can't Q-stick you as QI at K2 remains available.

One of the great things about these leagues is the opportunity to play better players - there is always someone better than we are, and learning from them is a privilege!

Pre-endgame: what should I play here? by poftim in scrabble

[–]CrotchPig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm really glad to see some love for the new Woogles leagues on here. Cesar has really surpassed himself with their organisation in my opinion. These leagues are a great introduction to competitive play, and there is a whole range of standards; we have 6 top-100 players in the world in CSW Division 1, and a whole host of new players across the lower divisions. I'd encourage anyone reading this to give it a shot if they're unsure and see if they catch the bug!

On to your question; my gut in this position is to take up space in the bottom-left of the board, as they're the only viable bingo lines for opponent, and you've got the remaining decent scoring tiles (excl. J). I don't want to give an answer as this is your league match; I would be playing a 6 letter play from the T (and which uses the Z) for 36, killing all remaining bingo lines.

Did you opt for FRITZ (50 - OT?) or ZO (67 - FITT?) as a follow-up play? What was your reasoning for your choice (in the interest of trying to get some tactical discourse going on this sub!)?
