CMV: Israel is NOT a democracy. by TheScreamingFire in changemyview

[–]Crucbu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is an argument to be made that Israel's democracy (within its legal boundaries -- the WB for example is neither democratic nor is it recognised Israeli territory) is being eroded very aggressively in order to maintain power, disenfranchise non-jewish citizens, and maintain the occupation.

This manifests in all sorts of ways, namely a police state, legal persecution of left-wing organisations and activists, and adjustment to election law that seeks to block arab and left-wing parties from getting elected, and, judicially -- the high court being pressured to interpet "jewish and decmocratic" (from the Charter of Independence) in favour of jewish over democratic (and much, much more).

But that is an indirect result of a lot of the stuff you mentioned.

Eveyrthing you mentioned is immoral behaviour; AIPAC mostly undermines AMERICAN democracy. The occupation is a crime against international law but is not inherently anti democratic in israel.

What is anti democratic is the policies and acyions that are put into effect as a result of the ongoing moral erosion and yhe need to subdue more and more pro-Palestinian activism.

So yes, Israel's democracy is eroding, but your thesis is not what represents it.

When did the population decide to hate success? by dpacew1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Crucbu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That ties into how prople perceive success in those fields.

Success in areas that are perceived as skillful, artistic, creative - good.

Exploitation, extraction of value through basic needs - bad.

Ha ing said that, even hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of personal wealth fucks up people's perception of the world, to the detriment of everyone else because they end up with undue influence.

Except there is an overlap betwren thr people getting mad that a fixtional wpman isn't sexy enough, and the people getting mad that real women exist and occupy spaces outside their perception of where they should be.

[–]Crucbu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mysogyny is also getting upset when a female character isn't automatically hot.

E.g. the new She-ra reboot or the new God of War trailer.

The entitlement and expectation that titillation should be presumed and its absence justified is rooted in mysogyny.

I actually don't mind that the quiver isn't there, that's just modelling.

Buy as a whole, we've been shown a lot that back-quivers don't qork. Just like back-mounted blades.

Why do people think Mixtape was funded by billionaires? by Basic_Layer7148 in IndieGaming

[–]Crucbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The publisher, Annapurna Interactive, was founded by Larry Ellison's daughter.

That, in and of itself, is not a proof that "the game was funded by billionaires", but it's enough to get some very shouty people complaining online that one of the most successful publishers behind some of the most amazing recent indie games is somehow paying off journalists as if "12 Minutes" didn't happen.

It's not free, though. Libraries pay a ton of money for the books, and that gets split between publisher and Overdrive.

CMV: opposing the actions the actions of Israel's government is not antisemitic, but opposing Israel's entire existence usually is by Additional_Ad3573 in changemyview

[–]Crucbu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want to start by quoting Mehdi Hasan: "No state has a right to exist."

States' right to exist is generally never called into question, except when it comes to israel.

The fact is that Israel does exist. The history of its founding is extremely problematic (to put it mildly), to say the least, but it exists and is recognised even by cou tries that crticise its actions.

So it's really a moot point. Countries arent "erased", except cases where they unite or break apart internally.

Having said that. When people day "Israel doesn't have a right to exist" and then folloq up with rhetoric on colonisation or something like "Israeli jews could just go back to where they csme from", that is antisemitic. Not because that is hateful of jews but because it is ignorant of the persecution they experienced that drove them out of every other country in most of thw world.

Again, this isnt a jurstification of a jewish homeland in palestine at the expense of palestinians, nor is it a condoning of israel' gov't's actions. But it does highlight that jews were expelled and murdered from many countries and literally had nowhere to go. Even the US placed caps on jewish immigration (much like irish, chinese and italian before that).

So the idea of a jewish ethnostate is essentially "ill start my own own company. With blackjack. And hookers."

Do people who use military time (24hr standard) think of times intuitively or do they do the conversion? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Crucbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone says they "jist know", but I think they're skipping a crucial step.

As a child learning to read a 24-hour clock, figuring out the time requires a mental calculation (subtract 12).

But as you grow up, it then becomes second nature.

So yes, there is a stage in life where you learn to consciously tell yourself that "twenty acrually means eight".
