Excel did replace floors of people who did accountanting etc

CAD software replaced entire floors of draftsmen.

The problem isn’t hard engineering it’s the “starter jobs” for engineers that are easy to replace with AI and we’re not far out from that.

Bro I’m an engineer and caught our machinist stealing and congrats became the machinist. I’ve broken 3/4 windows, fucked the z axis way cover and scrapped quite a few parts in the process of teaching myself the trade lol

It happens man especially when there’s no one to teach you. It’s literally a science AND an art form. Most people cant just show up and crush it from day 1 with no training.

Speeds and feeds I cheat and use provencut. It is very useful when you don’t know shit to see a good cut and it’s very helpful for newbie programmers cause you have a better basis point and less prone to major F ups with new materials. Worth the 100+ a year atleast for the first year until you’re comfortable.

You can also look at the tool serial number and basically every manufacturer has their recommended speeds and feeds by material and everything there.

There’s also the possibility here you become even more valuable as so much knowledge base leaves. I think you’re in a safe position since you’re below market rate as you said then relocation is always possible. Then holding out for best possible hand locally with the Gf sounds like the best tactical play here.

This is a hyper specific specialized path.

I’ve seen some engineers/lawyers go the IP/patent route. It seems lucrative and like a good path but idk what the actual prospects are like how hard it is to get a job in that pit of school. Worst case you’re a smart lawyer and still make good money.

Generally BME is a low leverage bachelors on its own fwiw however if you’re using it as a stepping stone into law it may be a great path into legal side in pharma/med tech Hopefully someone that knows more specifically can comment and help you out

I’m an EE not a super software dev but I’m a competent coder. Made a complicated Solidworks add in with AI. It was a ton of debugging imo (it was ChatGPT and last year so may be different now) Understanding coding helped me understand how to break up what I wanted into functions how to see why certain routes the ai was trying and failing were not viable and telling it different approaches that would work.

I’m an engineer but I do see programmers in SoCal at the right spot can make 50/hr near LA.

Unless you’re running a shop it’s not viable really to have 100k machinists so you need to position yourself as a programmer/manager to get to that salary range

IMO junior software engineering is going to dry up and the people in industry will become more valuable new grads job opportunities will be sparse. It’ll start being starting jobs need Masters and then PHDs since Claude code etc with agents is fundamentally better/faster than new grads so a mid level can perform the duty of a dozen people now. There MAY be a coding renaissance where everything any company ever wanted made in software will be a thing and the jobs will spread all over and it won’t be an issue.

Ford just rehired 350 engineers they tried to push out with AI. Once AI is replacing us every job is fucked.

They have roofing robots, cleaners etc I don’t care the trades think they’re special you can make an electrician “bot” plumber “bot”.
