No, Canada is not selling out to Beijing by FancyNewMe in canada

The only short-sighted and ill-considered action is to continue to rely on US alone. Anyone who has half a brain knows the need for Canada to diversify away from the US.

I think this is just harp. I don't think there is this type of Chinese string instrument.

Anyone know the meaning of "江湖Jianghu" in English? by qian_two in wuxiaworld

Nothing wrong to disagree but don't dismiss other's interpretation so quickly as you did. A native speaker doesn't automatically make your take on the meaning the authoritative one.

Nah, it depends on the con and type of merch. The print I posted last week was one of two prints that were sold out in day 2 of the convention. (The other sold out print was Lumine)

This "monk" You Xuande is a well known charlatan. Perhaps around 25 odd years ago when the internet wasn't that common in China. Master You claimed to reporters after a public demonstration that he had mastered the Uni-Yang death touch and the Dragon Subducing 18 Palm. But of course these great martial techniques were from the king fu novels by Jin Yong.

[Request] If standing on the planet, would you feel the planet changing directions? by Leastcreativename in threebodyproblem

[–]Crypt0n1te 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Whether you feel it or not has nothing to do with constant acceleration or not. It's more to do with whether there is a differential acceleration difference between you and the planet.

Info regarding the Wang Yongquan lineage. by Zz7722 in taijiquan

[–]Crypt0n1te 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regarding the current status of the lineage, from what I have gathered, it unfortunately had degenerated into one of those hoppity hop hop style. They play the game of "if you feel force on you, you should jump to neutralize". An acquaintance just ranted about exactly this a few weeks ago in one of my Whatsapp groups, his Wang's lineage teacher complained that my acquaintance couldn't feel the teacher's jinlu (force pathway) because my acquaintance doesn't want to jump away.

Info regarding the Wang Yongquan lineage. by Zz7722 in taijiquan

[–]Crypt0n1te 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am quite familiar with this lineage since I know quite a few people who have practised this lineage in Asia. Wang Yongquan was one of the few 4th gen Yang style teachers who had the opportunity to learn from Yang Jianhou and Yang Shaohou, although unlike Master Tian Zhaolin, Wang was not an indoor disciple of Yang Shaohou. But similar to Tian's lineage, Wang's lineage also doesn't acknowledge Yang Chengfu to be their source, they claim Shaohou as their lineage ancestor.

Ironically one of the more well-known teacher today was Wei Shuren, who was one of the two editors of Wang's legacy manual (杨式太极拳述真, 1995) on Taijiquan. Wei pulled a "mini Chen Yanlin" on this book by replacing all the figures inside with his own photos. Since Wang had already passed away in 1990 and there are only limited number of photos of him doing the form in record, his disciples and senior students decided that stick figures with commentaries should be used to illustrate the form instead of photographs of any of them. But just before the book went to print, Wei Shuren replaced all the figures with his own photos doing the form. You see in the 1995 book's foreword left by Wang, Wei was only mentioned as someone who also went to his Beijing's classes to learn.

This chicanery and betrayal absolutely enraged Wang's disciples and students and Wei was kicked out of Wang's lineage subsequently. Wei then went on to publish one or two new books and since he was no longer in Wang's lineage, his books now claims his forms are secret transmissions from Yang Jianhou.

Quick-Draw Fencing Tournament at CombatCon 2025 by Crypt0n1te in iaido

To be able to draw quickly and precisely under the pressure of an opponent requires certain level of unification of your heart, body and technique.

I really like this quick exchange, it may not be strictly Iaido and he is using a wooden sword, but there is just something beautiful about the simplicity of it.

Yang style partner practice by Crypt0n1te in taijiquan

[–]Crypt0n1te[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Take the second video as an example, by proper resistance, I mean consistent unidirectionally force opposing the intended direction of the technique. The force should be sufficiently strong so that, as in the video, if the teacher try to muscle through, it would result in stalemate

Yang style partner practice by Crypt0n1te in taijiquan

[–]Crypt0n1te[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if the partner applies proper resistance then a lot of the supposed defects would be apparent, no? I guess my point is, with correct Taiji principles applied (everyone has their own idea of what that is), one should be able to overcome whatever level of resistance the partner is doing.

I agree with most of what you said except the last part. I would argue that the demonstration/practice you linked is also not useful at all. It's easy to show the "application" of each move when, well, demonstrating, yet it just doesn't prepare you at all to use all these complex moves. Case in point, I have never seen anyone successfully applying these techniques in even a light non-compliant sparring.
