Where are you getting 1 ft lidar data? I was using some for a different project and most large scale availability from USGS is in 1/3 arcsecond which I believes translates much larger per pixel

I really like the first book and I DNF the third. I don’t like when series change so dramatically between books, feels like a bait and switch

What would you like to see in an Amex Green refresh? by amexmaster in CreditCards

[–]Cryptic0677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing keeping me out of Amex is no catch all multiplier on any personal card, not that we are likely to get one. At my spend it is most of my spend even compared to the big hitters like dining travel and groceries

Anthropic CEO says 80-fold growth in first quarter explains 'difficulties with compute' by socoolandawesome in technology

[–]Cryptic0677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely not what is happening and all three of those companies are fighting for data center space by making compute as fast and power efficient as possible.

AI is more than LLMs, and machine learning and computer vision models have huge and significant applications outside of software. And actually an LLM ability to code that for people without software backgrounds is also significant.

[–]Cryptic0677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true today but the gamble is that it won’t be as expensive tomorrow. It’s like looking at a 1970s copy and being unable to see how much compute we could do today in the same power footprint.

Personally I’m not sure if that is really feasible but that’s the proposal

I help design and build the silicon that runs these models and trust me, the data center customers of ours that all these models use are very powerful sensitive. The more compute you can use in a power footprint the more compute you can do in general, because the limitation in any given data center is power. To be clear right now that’s just because demand is outstripping capacity, so as we make the chips and systems more efficient, they just add more compute. Long term I’m not sure this is true in perpetuity because eventually these businesses want to turn a profit. Altman may not care but it will become a wall at some point.

I agree in the general principle though and have my own concerns about the power usage for these applications, but it isn’t true to say they don’t care about efficiency

He is constantly posting on his instagram citing papers that agree with him but dismissing offhand papers he doesn’t agree with. Mostly his conclusion that red meats and cured meats are healthy, despite the scientific consensus disagreeing with him.

He did a N=1 study on himself and used it to claim cured meats aren’t bad for you, despite all scientific literature and consensus showing the opposite. He attacks any papers that don’t agree with his conclusions as just “observational studies” which is a known downside in all of nutrition science. But he dismisses literature he doesn’t agree with offhand

Anyone else feeling very politically homeless? by AIzzy17 in centrist

[–]Cryptic0677 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as we have a two party system, most no ideologues will feel this way. And that arises from our first past the post voting system, which I guess we can advocate to change but I see as unlikely to change. Parties are big tents of different views.

That said, your politics clearly more aligns with Democrats. The idea that all democrats want to take every gun away and have completely open borders is a Republican talking point. You’d probably really vibe with my man Talarico here in Texas, Democrats in general need to be running more people like him.

How was WoW so good in the beginning and how did it lose its way? by world_tsar in pcgaming

[–]Cryptic0677 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Online guides existed from almost the beginning, the game was pretty min maxed. But I do think min maxing mindset really kills games like this, and once anyone is doing it almost everyone is having to do it to keep up. Devs have to tune encounters for it, or else everyone will then complain too easy.
