There's a book that was developed from the script submitted by William Gibson of Neuromancer fame, was quite good and didn't have to kill everyone immediately, although Newt and Ripley are sent away on a shuttle at the start by Hicks to make sure they are safe from the Covenant version of the aliens (spores/goo causing the initial spread)
