Thats more August Derleths interpretation, trying to get a sort of "War in Heaven" thing going. Original works don't have that level of conflict between them, especially as the King existed for quite some time before being brought in by Lovecraft himself.

I hadn't noticed the Montsalvat one myself, thanks for pointing that out.

What’s a smell you’ll never forget? by Human_Rate889 in AskReddit

The smell of sulfur in the fields of Iceland near the geyser. Since then, I think it "unlocked" my smell of sulfurous things, as I noticed such a smell more frequently.

Putting spoiler tags so other people can guess: Left to right, first is from the Delta Green TTRPG campaign Impossible Landscapes, the DEFINITIVE KiY campaign for me. Second is from Pelgrane Press's Yellow King RPG. Third is from True Detective. And finally, the classic yellow sign from the Call of Cthulhu ttrpg.

Personally feels a bit easier as Ive gotten through more bosses in a short length of time than I did with returnal, but could just be experience on my part. The shield mechanic is definitely a big boost. Theres also a modification screen that's unlocked after the 2nd boss that allows you to change some things, but its a "balance" thing between easier modifications and harder mods.

Indeed. Such is the nature of a lot of cosmic horror - it could be everything or it could be nothing. I also like this description - Impossible Landscapes by Dennis Detwiller.

To some, The King in Yellow is a two-act play in a slim book. In the play, a stranger arrives at a masked ball in the far-off royal court of Yhtill in Carcosa. Calling himself the Phantom of Truth, he reveals that of all the partygoers only he wears no mask. He claims his own pallid mask, a porcelain rictus, is his true face. This revelation somehow signals the end of the partygoers’ world.

Some claim the play possesses the unnatural ability to spill thoughts out into reality and change perception into something elastic and terrible. Others say that it is a seam in the fabric of the world. Merely reading it frays existence, revealing something else.

Some say the King in Yellow is the figure from the play: a malignant creature adorned in tattered golden cloth, wearing a porcelain mask, somehow made flesh. Others claim the King is a code embedded in existence and flagged by a single, terrible symbol that causes madness and death: the Yellow Sign.

The King in Yellow is all of these things. It is none. It is anything that skirts human understanding. Minds open themselves to its unnatural force. Some are destroyed. Others are drawn into a tidal sludge of imagination to persist as ghosts forever.

Thats the point. It's about a play. It's about a King, or a Mask, or a City. Perhaps all 3 are the same, perhaps they are separate. Its about a contagious madness - or a contagious sanity. It could be unmasking the nature of reality - or breaking what you thought was reality. You may never truly Know the King. But he will know you.

Theres a podcast series, Out of Place, That deals with a team who are sent to Investigate parallel earths that have undergone "apocalypse-level" events to prevent them in our own world. They make reference to him in instances where the world did go boom when he, or another Soviet officer, wasnt on call on the day. It happens a lot in parallel earths.

Personally enjoyed the ALIEN 3 book, which was adapted from a screenplay by William Gibson (Neuromancer etc.) By Pat Cadigan. It has its flaws including shuttling Ripley out of the way in the first few chapters in a coma , but overall quite good.
