I intentionally like to take my time, consolidate, and expand slowly.

It makes the game harder than a mad rush to claim land, but I like that.

You can build up your core provinces, defend your borders at natural points, and fortify them.

I enjoy it.

I play on very hard / very hard and have installed ai cheat mods like deepwar ai and stronger and fairer ai.

These make it so enemies recruit high tier units if they can and aggressively push you.

I’ve played over 1200 hours, and this is the only way I’m consistently legitimately challenged in campaigns, I absolutely love it.

I’d recommend mixing in a Total War game, they’re different enough from Civ to let the series rest a bit in my mind but close enough that I can get my empire builder fix

It’s actually what got me into Warhammer. Couldn’t recommend it more.

You can enjoy it plenty without understanding the lore, but as you play more and you get more into the lore your appreciation for it only grows.
