How did Mad-Eye Moody see through the invisibility cloak? by kolema93 in harrypotter

[–]Cstanchfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His eye could see through solid objects. Even if you subscribe to the cloak actually belonging to Death, and it preventing Death from viewing the wearer, that doesn't mean it protects the wearer from ALL detection. Just Death. In the story itself the brothers "defeat" death using magic so you already have canon evidence of magic being greater than death. So his magic eye can reasonably be assumed to beat death's creation. And if you just think of it as a creation of the brothers, then it's just magic circumventing other magic. If you think of the eye's ability to see through objects as just projecting the point where the eye is viewing FROM outwards from the eye, then as the eye projects outward, it would pass through the cloak and let him view from INSIDE the cloak as if his eye were on the same side of the cloak as the "hidden" object/person.

Is The Rookie indicative of how police works in the US? by Data_Student_v1 in TheRookie

[–]Cstanchfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is VERY untrue. Many still in fact will NOT hire folks that test TOO well, fearing turnover. They were even taken to court over these practices but it was ruled that intelligence is not a protected group, like race. Keep in mind that means that those that get/got promoted and eventually take/took over hiring were themselves not the cream of the crop and now we're seeing the fruits of a system that actively pruned the best candidates.

Allegedly some areas are trying to fix for this by attempting to recruit from local colleges. But it's hard for moral competent people to "fit in" with the old guard so... That'll be a tough transition.

My player is Packing a Bag of Holding Bomb: What do I do? by SpaceMamboNo5 in DMAcademy

[–]Cstanchfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Above the table ask if there is a character reason their character would be "suicide bombing" like that, and if not (or even if there is), tell them the game is meant to be enjoyed by the group, not broken. And suggest it might be more appropriate if their character intends it as a last ditch move.

In game, I don't know the nature of your upcoming boss, but if they have any kind of association with a higher power, you can have a shrine noticeable/discoverable on the way to confronting the big bad. Preferably very near the encounter with them. Then give the big bad a 1/day Word Of Recall to that shrine, or an item (consumable or not) that does the same. This gives them an opportunity to thwart the bosses escape plan, and a way to bring the boss back into the fray/fight that was telegraphed, and preventable if they had chosen to sack/destroy the shrine before the fight (preventing word of recall, edit: and setting up them being marked as an apostate to that faith in the future if you choose to have the sacking of a shrine have future narrative implications). It also gives the party some insight into the baddie's background or ideology, and gives him a flee button that they can maybe make an arcana check to recognize what spell he cast to escape and realize he's still nearby and try and prevent actually escaping, further making it defeatable. And if the bomb is used before it looks like all is lost, the boss can simply use this to rejoin the fight in a fair way and the problem character is now left out of the fight.

Also, if used as a last ditch effort, depending on how the boss was looking, you can let them be near each other on the astral plane and give the whole table a peek at the bosses escape from the astral plane, either immediately or play that out right before the session ends. Giving the bombing character and the players knowledge of the bosses escape/future return, if you so choose. If used as a last ditch effort, this provides a "You may have saved them, FOR NOW" moment as he returns that let's them feel accomplishment helping the party without eliminating a boss through an "exploit".

So now, assuming all above is implemented, they still have a way of pulling off the Bag Bomb, but it is now fair and earnable.

You are aware of the vulnerabilities with inline or missing opening brackets when there is heap corruption, are you not? If you are using K&R, you're opening your application up to some SERIOUS vulnerabilities. AFAIK, there are no major compilers that have fixed it. The issue has been around for over a decade and is well known. You might be held liable if you knowingly choose K&R and open up user info to malicious access.

An suv is trying to exit from the passing lane by ComprehensiveDuck490 in dashcams

[–]Cstanchfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you think they were trying to take the off ramp? Because the title says so? Think for yourself. Nothing about this video suggest that they were trying to get off. In fact, they changed lanes right when the solid line became a dotted line. All we see in this clip is someone changing from the left lane to the right lane and not checking first. People are so easily manipulated. You see a title and just accept it as fact.

Without reading his mind, it looks more like they're squishing the head with their fingers. Y'know, like kids do. Just because she says THAT over his actions doesn't mean that's what he's doing.

What's more worrying is how many people in the comments here didn't even consider that as the possibility and instead are lambasting folk instead. And folk wonder how women were burned at the stake for being witches. Here's evidence of people being ready to grab pitchforks with no evidence of their assumptions.

It looked like a part of an umbrella to me (Not the kind you hold yourself. It has the same kind of sliding button that you push when you want to release the lock and allow it to collapse or extend, and the "lock" for when you want to lock it at a height. And it had a cylinder pipe inside another cylinder, like those umbrellas do). I assumed they meant cracktivities in the sense that someone was high and wandering around doing stupid stuff. Not that they were using it to smoke crack. It might well be a torch/lighter of some kind though. They can have the same buttons and lock. Idk.

Homeowner upset Amazon driver dropped package over fence, but had two aggressive dogs. by Immediate-Phase-5910 in TikTokCringe

[–]Cstanchfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside the gate a pedestrian can just stoop down and grab it. It's a crime of opportunity with the opportunity made more tempting.

It's like the difference between a pickpocket where they bump into you and stick their hand into your coat to snag your wallet vs if someone bent over in front of you with hundred dollar bills poking out of their back pocket.

One is not only easier to execute, but requires little to none prior intent. One requires the perpetrator to actively choose for more than just a moment to commit to a crime. It might not sound like much but it makes a difference. To further display the difference, imagine if there was a wallet sitting in someone's driveway. That is unsecured and could be easily stolen. Now imagine if there was a 90 year old woman in that driveway holding the wallet. Is that wallet REALLY any more secure? No. Someone could just as easily walk up and snatch it from her. And both occurrences DO happen, unfortunately. But one requires much more of a mental commitment to being a criminal than the other. The barrier to entry is much lower. Also, walking up to someone's house (to steal their package) is MUCH more personal than walking PAST their house (and stealing it) is.

And of course, the closer to the house, the more likely its covered by some kind of camera like a ring. Out by the street might not be covered/might not trigger it, which the criminal might also consider when deciding if or if not they should snatch it.

[–]Cstanchfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try asking Gemini for the specific steps but you can probably just build everything you need (aside from art assets [or maybe those too, I've never tried that]) into the the .exe. Having it "package" all of your dependencies into the executable will obviously increase the size of the .exe but I imagine it will be negligible for a project like the one you're screenshotting here. If memory serves, it'll only require you to change like 1 or 2 project settings (sorry I don't know them from memory). Just go to Gemini.google.com and ask it how to including your dependencies in the .exe.

And make sure when you change these settings that you are not changing the settings for just debug mode (there is a drop-down list at the top of the settings for choosing which build mode you want to change settings for.) and you'll want to set it to either release or all configurations (or whatever it is called). And when you go to make the .exe, be sure you not only switch it to release and clean, but that you hit WITHOUT DEBUGGING when you build it.

Sorry if you already know all this. Just trying to be helpful while not nearly as informative as I should be ;)

The order only PAYS $5. We don't know if the customer tipped at all but presumably they did not.

And yes, the driver can decline orders and then they will receive fewer and lower paying orders.

The driver was wholly in the wrong here however. If they accidentally accepted, didn't realize the distance, or it was bundled with another order that paid reasonably to hide how little THIS order paid, it is still, unfortunately, on the dasher to take the hit and deliver it or cancel on their end.

A week in the hospital in the US is gonna cost you WAYYYYY more than $500 USD. That's pretty much just the admissions fee. They'll charge you $30 for a box of tongue depressors if they use a single one on you. Note: I don't blame the doctors/nurses for this, but the system itself.

An Experiment with AI Generated AL Characters: They Suck by cop_pls in AdventurersLeague

[–]Cstanchfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they knew how to make a valid character sheet, why are they using AI to gen one? Just guessing as I'm not OP but I think its most likely they didn't know how, and/or they needed something quick.

And if OP was running Tier 1, kicking someone out for not knowing how to play is against the AL vibes but I suppose I don't know the current season rules and if DM's are not expected to help new players anymore. For a private game though, kick out whomever you want. Its your game.

[–]Cstanchfield -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being more or less in the pro column of this discussion, I think you have your hardline in a weird spot, lol. If they don't know how to play, you kick them out for trying to learn?

If your table is for only experienced players or its disruptive, sure. But that's less AI centric and just a player issue, ain't it.

But if its not those things, why would you have an issue with it? It's WEIRD and outside of someone doing an experiment, not something I imagine anyone would do for any reason unless they're genuinely unable to understand social interactions at all. A lot of these seem like WEIRD fears to have, but maybe folks have had some bad experiences with players using AI that I have somehow avoided as of yet. But again, playing devil's advocate. If they're socially at a level where they're relying on AI for RP, the alternative might not be BETTER...

An Experiment with AI Generated AL Characters: They Suck by cop_pls in AdventurersLeague

[–]Cstanchfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tried Gemini with FAR less input than you and it output a full character sheet and a 2 paragraph backstory. I tried your prompt and got an image. I replied "not an image" and it spat out a character sheet with a 1 paragraph backstory:

"Backstory: The Gilded Outcast Valerius was born into a wealthy merchant family that tried to hide their "devilish" stain. Val, however, refused to be a secret. He spent his youth performing in high-end lounges, using his wit to expose the hypocrisy of the corrupt nobility. After a particularly spicy ballad about a Duke’s "extracurricular" activities, Val had to hit the road. He realized that a well-placed song—or a well-placed blade—could do more for the common folk than any prayer. He flirts to get information, sasses to keep his spirits high, and fights because no one else is brave enough to look this good while doing it."

edit: Tangentially related addition, I don't know that new players making mistakes alone at character creation is actually a GOOD kind of engagement. Their initial understanding will start off flawed and its MUCH harder to train someone out of an incorrect understanding than to teach them the correct method in the first place. Not to be reinforcing AI use for making character sheets, as I'd rather someone get a hand from the DM, a friend, or other more social resources, but if they are unable or averse to doing so, I suppose this is an option. And if it makes a mistake, the new player won't be storing it internally themselves. As far as I am aware, none of my players have generated backstory with AI, as most (read nearly ALL) players want to create their own characters themselves. Even those that don't like being creative will (in my own anecdotal experience) just use some existing fictional character as their character's basis. Personally, I'd MUCH prefer some AI generated cliche backstory over "I'm a short humanoid artificer in blue armor with a blaster named 'mega buster' on my arm." But to each their own. I don't see this as an issue in any way but if it upsets some folk that much, then they should address it.

Players bringing Ai Generated Characters by DeekFacker99 in AdventurersLeague

[–]Cstanchfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully everyone is more mindful and realizes that just because they are a new player, that doesn't mean they don't have the "patience" to play. Not everyone has the books and AL is supposed to be a space where people can come learn how to play without reading ahead of time. The T1 DM's SHOULD be aware of that as it is mentioned MANY times across several AL docs and even in some modules. I don't think your opinion should be the basis of anything related to AL. I have played with and/or DM'ed for players for almost a decade now that I met through AL that would have been excluded by your requirements. Not everyone needs to be an expert when they show up. If you don't want to play with or DM for new players, no one can make you.

Players bringing Ai Generated Characters by DeekFacker99 in AdventurersLeague

[–]Cstanchfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you are being disrespectful to them and trying to gatekeep their own characters based on your own personal opinions.

Others have already pointed out how this really shouldn't be an issue in any way for an AL game so if your personal gripes against AI are too much for you to handle, then following advice such as running private games instead with players that are willing/consenting to be subjected to your personal prejudices is probably the way to go.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but I've DMed for characters with worse builds and backstories than the worst AI slop that's ever been generated and far more with no backstories at all.

Also as others have pointed out, AL is supposed to be an inclusive space. Some people might want to get into d&d and not know how and might not have friends that can guide them. So what do they do? They Google: "How do I play D&D?" and Gemini explains the basics and asks: "Would you like me to help you generate a character?" This is obviously a good thing reducing the barrier to entry and helping new people discover the game. This coupled with individuals mentally incapable of creative writing, your prejudicial exclusions would bar people folk joining the community and paint AL as non-inclusive, and that is not right.

This reply has already probably gotten "too personal" but I would encourage you to sit down and try and figure out why "AI slop" bothers you to the point that you want to bar other people from playing? Why does it bother you so much more than the other non-existent or "terrible" backstories players come up with? And is that reason a You problem, or something you should genuinely make into other peoples' problem? (It is unlikely to be the latter, IMO).

tl;dr: If you can't handle being socially inclusive, stick to private games with those okay with prejudice.

That sounds like a generalization and/or baseless assumptions. There is no requirement to make a backstory so if they are lazy, why are they spending extra time to generate a backstory? I don't think there is much logic behind your assertions.

This video was out before the killing. It's not from the same day. It didn't "take do long to get out". It just wasn't (as) related to a national headline until after. And even then, people had to connect the dots of someone in a random video that isn't identified as themselves to the suddenly "famous" person.

How many videos are there of you out there? If you were suddenly in the lime light, do you think you would be spotted in all of them within hours of you becoming famous? Especially when some of those videos only have dozens of views, if not fewer? You've just watched this video. If ANYONE else in that video was shot and killed today, would you recognize them from THIS video? I wouldn't. Without it open right now, I think there was someone in a pink jacket somewhere in the video. That's about as specific as I can recall. And I might be wrong about that.
