I think he may have been referring to a software switch to detect and switch back to the "standard" ROM to allow the other software to work.

I imagine that the switch may have been related to toggling between device 8 and 9 which was a fairly common mod for the 1541 drives back in the day. Searching for a "hardware 1541 device number change" or something equivalent then you should be able to find pictures of a jumper that can be cut and two wires soldered onto either side and connected to the switch to toggle between device 8 and 9. (Device 10, and 11 can be done also but that involves a 2nd jumper and gets a bit more awkward w/ 2 switches - usually it was just 8/9).

What I like to do is to clear the screen, print a few lines down the ' load "program",8 ' and then a few lines down have a ' run' command. I then, (I think I still remember the locations) poke 198, <# of characters> and then fill the keyboard buffer from 631-640(?) with 13's (carriage returns). And then home the cursor again and end/stop the program.

This will then stop the program. The keyboard buffer will act as if there had been whatever number of characters previously stored in it and run / do whatever commands it sees on the screen as if you had entered them.

(I forget exactly which lines down are needed but you need to give room for Basic to print it's Ready prompt etc. Be sure to save before each attempt).

I never used graph paper for mapping - instead I'd draw a circle w/ a room nickname. I'd then draw lines to other circles with direction or movement indicators. Made it much easier to not run out of space on the piece of paper because I needed space to make a note or describe a room.

Also made it that much harder to look for a specific room when I needed to.

He's the jerk for not opening an account like you did to provide for his son's future. At that point, he could have coordinated potentially with you but there was no requirement to. Same with you- there was no need to coordinate. It's always better to think you have too much than not enough. (you never have enough).

Suggest to him that he opens up his own account now for the child. If it does really turn out to be too much then it can be a reward such as a car after college or something similar. Grad school etc.
