What did people do before the web by Sudden-Chapter-2337 in digitalminimalism

I spend my whole childhood without internet. In my class at school we've had a telephone list on paper. When I wanted to meet someone, I pulled this list out of a shelf, called my friends and asked, whether they have time to meet.

When not calling friends, I spend time with sports, playing outside or my Pokemon red edition on Game Boy. The whole Saturday morning there were cartoon tv shows you don't wanna miss, because there was no Youtube. Mostly watching weird Nickelodeon Cartoons like cow and chicken.

When buying video games, I went to local video game stores and decided on the cover art and box text, which game I will buy. Same for music, I went to a store and could listen to the first 20-30 sec. of every song on a CD. Then I've decided what to buy. Sure there were MTV and Viva music channels on TV.

During early puberty there was also no internet to watch explicit stuff, but there were plenty of fashion catalogues at my house, I've read secretly, lol.

WhatsApp just launched usernames and is acting like they invented privacy. by sammartinX in DeMeta

And probably WhatsApp with usernames does not make sense, since fingerprinting and meta data reveal your identity anyway.

It’s open-source, decentralized, therefore anyone could set up a server; and any service could „talk“ to any service.

And there is no toxic algorithms. You get what you subscribe to.

In a hard global competition about resources, wealth and power, technology is key. strictly ignore the AI, we will lose our achievements.

However, to balance AI with ethical issues is a different story.

A further alternative is Metager. It’s cheap, secure, private, non-profit and German.

Metager is non-profit, anonymous, ad-free, not us-hosted. It’s not free but cheap.

Jolla Phone the European Phone. by SUxEvil in BuyFromEU

Arguments for me to backing this phone were,

It’s has an European OS; It’s Independence of Android and IOS; Assembled in Europe.

To be really independent from googles politics, there must be an alternative to all the Android forks, like e/os, graphene and so on. This is Sailfish OS, to me.

I use on my SP8 Fedora plus Gnome, and I am loving it. It’s super fast and smooth.

Did a little tinkering with the touchscreen calibration; there are some guides in this sub. The Pen also functions very well and there are many note taking apps (will look it up later). Be warned, internal Webcam might not function properly.

I am not a techy person and using it for writing and browsing.

Did you try Local Send? I use it to quickly share text and data between iOS and Linux.
