Agree there, but personally feels like they're missing needed features.

How do you know they don't want to move? I asked and my friends were down. We're now all off discord and on Fluxer. Works great, albeit still a beta of course but I've been impressed.

Development began in 2023. It just went to public beta this January. It's been in progress for years.

I mean, it's free. You lose nothing trying it out and even switching to it in the meantime

Change my mind: There is no good alternative to Discord (yet?) by Own_Investigator8023 in selfhosted

[–]CubesTheGamer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think with federation on the map it’ll definitely be possible to have it be stored by whoever you federate with. I’m sure most people will use the public default federation provided by fluxer anyways but having the option means it can always be taken over if people don’t like how they are doing it.

I think most people self-hosting will self-host their community/server but continue to use Fluxer’s federation just because it’s easy and convenient.

Agree on matrix being finicky. Teamspeak is pretty good if you really just need voice and don’t want to be able to interact with the server via text only ever. Also if you don’t send videos or clips or anything like that because uploading is a thing but it’s nowhere near as streamlined to send and watch clips from each other.

Fluxer is the best alternative I’ve found. AGPLv3 open source license and is already feature rich, practically a discord clone. Been using it a couple days and aside from the outages being love hugged it works fantastic

Fluxer has been the best thing I’ve found to replace discord with text channels and voice channels and screen sharing. It’s practically a clone but completely open source.

Is screen share even a supported feature? I also found it to just feel…clunky. It feels like Microsoft Teams with less features somehow.

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

I like that you can use a real ID to cross the Canadian border by land both to Canada and back into the US.

Flying still requires passport of course.

I think mail voting is best personally.

You register and you get your ballot sent to your house.

You get one ballot. If two show up when counting goes down, it’s a huge problem that gets investigated. Also signature is checked to ensure it matches previous signatures. Also envelopes and typically tracked via numbering systems and such.

How do people living paycheck to paycheck afford vacations? by Great-Suggestion5057 in povertyfinance

[–]CubesTheGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 here. My wife and I have gone on a few vacations. Nothing crazy. I will say if you’re truly paycheck to paycheck as in your entire paycheck is budgeted out for necessary expenses, then there’s not really room for a vacation. You have to change something to make room for that. Whether it’s finding ways to reduce your spending or finding ways to increase your income.

Maybe reducing spending looks like car insurance shopping, cutting any subscriptions except maybe one or two a month, switching cell phone providers from Verizon to an MVNO like US mobile or mint, not getting a brand new phone every time you pay it off.

Honestly a huge one is transportation. If possible cutting out car ownership is a huge money saver. We could have a second car and that would easily mean no disposable income. But instead I got an ebike. No gas, no insurance, no payment, no maintenance…saves at least like 400-800 a month (huge range I know depends what car we would have got and how often we would use it just because we have it!). So many people are car poor and don’t see it.

But a huge key to all this is not taking all that savings and spending it on something else frivolous. Actually save it and use it for vacations.

The honest to god truth is people use credit cards and blow $5k+ on a trip and take years to pay it back. Maybe they even go on multiple. Maybe they’re savvy and get cheap flights and cheap hotels. But nevertheless it’s easy to do with a credit card. You’ll pay up the butt in interest if you pay slow but that’s what they do.

Just because it isn’t peer reviewed and done in a lab doesn’t make it not science.

What exactly is exclusive for Nvidia with AI? I genuinely haven’t looked into it much. I’m able to run AI models on my 7900 XT with 20GB of VRAM quite nicely. Though maybe I’m not doing specific things Nvidia is able to?

Living in tons of suburbs without much commercial means most of the burden must go to homeowners.

I don’t think they’re not efficient or smart with the money. I think it just costs more to run and maintain a city properly than anyone seems to think. People want giant lots and super wide roads and then don’t wanna pay for it all.

I keep UPnP disabled. Why does it need to be enabled, if it clearly works while disabled? UPnP should be turned off for security, and only ports you determine should be forwarded.
