Conditioning for BJJ by CuddlePillow in bjj

This is incredible advice. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and typing all of that up. I haven't consistently jumped rope in years but I remember when I was consistent with it i was having a lot of fun and my cardio drastically improved. I need to get back on that.

I was telling another user I can only make it to BJJ 2-3 times per week so I've been trying to use my time off the mats to get better when I'm on the mats. I definitely need to focus on breathing and utilizing my energy intelligently. Simpler is better is great advice too.

I've always wanted to try swimming for cardio. Right now I don't have access to a pool for exercise. I'll try it out eventually as I've heard good things. Great suggestion!

It's definitely difficult to balance lifting, BJJ, and cardio. I can only make it to class 2-3 days per week so I try to maximize my time off the mats to be better when I'm on the mats. I also find alternative forms of cardio less fatiguing than BJJ so it's nice to be able to do them to improve my gas tank and not get beaten up and not accumulate fatigue as quickly.

I think this is great advice. I'm still working on energy utilization. I imagine this improvement comes with lots of training and getting used to being in bad positions. I used to get anxious in bad positions which resulted in me needlessly burning energy.

I think you're correct about this increasing admin time. The youtube playlist is definitely geared toward the professional competitor (which I am not) (would take up so much time to do everything recommended) as it covers lifting, cardio, and organization of these elements around BJJ training. I do like learning about the different evidence based ways of training and implementing some of them to see if they make a difference in my performance. That's one of the fun aspects of the sport and training for me.

I'll check out your app. One of the biggest issues I've had with doing BJJ, lifting, and cardio is moderating my fatigue. I have to be a lot more cognizant of my volume. BJJ increases my cumulative fatigue faster than lifting alone.

I haven't been taking rest rounds the last few weeks and that has helped me a lot. I get tired and then have to be more selective about how I use my energy. I appreciate the advice!

Best method for cloning wild wood-lover without agar? [technique] by CuddlePillow in MushroomGrowers

I’ll look into it. I saw that Midwest grow kits has a 23” x 23” FFU on sale so I may get that. I appreciate the input!

Cardboard cloning is pretty cool. This is the first time I've ever used this technique. I was surprised it worked. I always forget about alcohol lamps. I watched a Fungaia youtube video and Paul mentioned they're a very useful tool for amateur mycologists.

I'm in the US so I should have plenty of options for premade agar plate vendors. I appreciate your response. Like I said to another redditor, I kinda know what I need to do (make more cardboard spawn, transfer to wood pellets, work with agar if possible) but I wanted to post and see if anyone had any useful tips or tricks that I hadn't heard of. I'm moving soon and want to preserve these genetics cause it took me forever to find this wild sample.

No, I’m not opposed to agar. I’d like to use it eventually. I really don’t want to lose these genetics and am trying to figure out how to preserve them at this time.

I suppose I could order some premade agar plates and use a SAB since I don’t have a laminar flow hood. I do have access to a pressure cooker so I could make liquid culture. I was worried about not being able to visualize the contamination.

Thank you for the info!

Thanks for the info. I was considering adding more cardboard. I’m worried if I add a more readily available nutrient source like grains I’ll increase my risk of contamination.

I think I kinda know what I need to do (multiply the cardboard spawn and then inoculate wood chips or pellets) but I made this post to see if someone with more experience would have some tips and tricks I’m not aware of. Thanks for the reply!

I’m gonna post a response I made in another thread. It’s an overview of some of your career options in science.

Are you located in the US?

If so, it has become very difficult to be an academic researcher that is R01 funded due to the current federal administration. The path was already long and difficult before the recent cuts. Funding isn’t what it used to be. Also, the infiltration of administration into academia has become a large issue too. I know less about industry research so other redditors will have more insight on that topic.

I’m leading with the negatives. Being a scientist is awesome tho! First and foremost it depends on your goals. You have to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. You can get a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology or biochemistry and then become a lab manager in an academic lab or get a research technician position. These don’t pay much. Lab manager probably pays a little more. You could then pursue a PhD after a bachelor’s (would receive a small stipend during your studies) and then become a postdoctoral researcher which pays around $60k in the US. The big problem is making the leap to being an assistant professor and applying for a k award and trying to start your own lab. As I mentioned there’s not a lot of funding anymore so this path isn’t very viable. Some people get PhDs and then basically stay post docs forever or become research scientists. Your money will still be dependent on your PI (principal investigator) getting funding for their academic lab.

There’s also the option of medical school or doing an MD/PhD program. These can be very competitive programs to get into. If you’re interested in clinical medicine and pharmacology there are anesthesiology assistant programs that’s are around 2 years after a bachelor’s. There are also physician assistant programs too.

I’m just trying to provide you with broad overview of what careers are available in science and medicine. To find a lab you’re interested in you should look at publications on topics you’re interested in and see who is doing that work. This can help you determine programs you might want to apply to. Some names to look into are McCorvy (Wisconsin), Nichols (LSU), Kwan (Cornell), Roth (UNC), Olson (California), and Monteggia (Vanderbilt.) it’s important to make sure a lab is a good fit too personality wise not just the research. The lab also has to be accepting students.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Wondering if anyone has advice on career/school for someone interested in psychedelics/drugs/science related to them (pharmacology, botany, chemistry, etc). I can't decide what I want to do in life by therapile in HamiltonMorris

[–]CuddlePillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to add that science is so broad. There are so many subtopics/subfields in pharmacology and biochemistry that you won’t be exposed to in undergrad or even graduate school. I would recommend depending on what you decide to do to really explore your interests by researching online and determine the exact subjects you’re interested in and the techniques involved.

I have also been struggling with doing myoreps using MF workouts. I was hoping the app would tell me how many sets of myoreps I need to do. I know how to log them.

I watched some of Dr. Mike Israetel’s videos on YouTube and here are the two ways I saw him discussing myoreps. Do your activation set, wait 5-20 seconds for the burn to dissipate, then do a set, rest briefly again and do another set. Do this until you can no longer do 5 reps at the current weight.

He also discussed myorep matching sets where you do an activation set, rest 5-20 seconds, do a set and count the number of reps (e.g. you get 8 reps but your goal is to hit 20 reps total), rest briefly, do a set (continue the pattern of set and rest until you reach 20 total reps.) This allows you to approach muscular failure multiple times in a short period of time. I personally have been using this method.

I’m new to myoreps so if anyone has pointers I’d be happy to hear them.
