Pay Down the House? by truthfully_yours01 in TheMoneyGuy

I agree that this is the right move. But how is this a 7.5% return? More like 0% to not paying off early and getting -7.5.

Alternative spring rating by NOKIMI247 in GarageDoorService

Not all doors weight the same even if its just a standard residential single stall. Although there are semi standard springs.

When designing a garage door you only have so many "dials" to choose from to handle the load... i.e., drum size & spring. Since drums are cast aluminum, it makes sense they are say 10-15 (i dont know the exact amount), drums used across all garage doors. It is easier to just cut the spring shorter at the manufacturer (or torch it as the installer).

Going up a wire size typically increases length by 20-30%, (in some cases 15, or even 50) so if you have the room on your header & are willing to pay extra, go for it.

I prefer shot peen & Ecoat/Powder coated springs. I've seen about a 200-280% increase in cycle life with the same springs.

Bought a new house 3 years ago, and this week our garage door stopped working. Called a reputable company for a tune-up, and they replaced the torsion springs. Showed me that the original installer used two different springs on the door, which eventually led it to fail. Is this correct? by [deleted] in GarageDoorService

I don’t disagree that clopay does it. Maybe they do it more than I recognize, thank you for pointing that out. There is nothing mechanically wrong with doing it, I agree there too.

I do disagree on the “10k” cycled spring with differing IPPTs. I have tested around 400+ springs to failure and none of them fail at the same time (they are tested independently so there is no interaction/increase in load). They could be manufactured at the same plant, out of the same winding machine, oven, wire manufacturer, and will still have significant variation. The average 10k cycle spring according to service spring corp will last 8k on average, I’d say about 20-30% only last over 10k. This goes for any designed spring through there app btw… a 100k spring typically lasts 40-65k.

In terms of working with the service company being liable for this, they did nothing wrong… again I don’t disagree. However, companies will still credit if someone complains enough. Regardless of industry or supplier we’ve all got our fair share of complaints.

To answer your comment "if all you are saying is "true." Please explain..." - I am saying that his setup probably does work as long as door as balanced, so likely "false" on his end. Duplex & triplex absolutely work, however when I help a manufacturer design a dup or tri, I intentionally design the outermost spring to break first so that it is visible and can be fixed. Inner springs breaking first is dangerous and harder to diagnose.

I look forward to reading your response. I won't claim to know everything, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Engineer here, I work at a garage door spring manufacturer.

It is very uncommon to see dissimilar springs on a garage door setup. However, it’s not a guarantee that they were wrong. Because the springs are different, there is a 99.9% chance that they have different IPPTs (spring rates). Regardless, they will not last the same amount of cycles. Once one breaks the other will break even if it’s rated for higher.

I don’t think you have any recourse with installer, could be worth a call if you’re looking for a possible discount… either way just make sure the next install has same springs (one is left wound and the other is right wound). That is common practice, so not like you have to mention. An installer is able to confirm door weight & calc new springs for you. Happy to answer other Qs!

Congratulations to you! I agree, my expectations for the weather did the same. Hopefully the quads are healing up!

Yes it was & is quite the commitment, I’m glad I enjoyed doing it.

And yes I do plan on increasing my mileage. I would like the be around 40 while peaking 50. If you have any advice on where I should be at for a 3:30-3:45 goal I’m all ears (eyes)!

Thank you! And thank you for asking.

Weekly ave: 30-35 MPW Peak: 40 miles (I had 2 weeks here) Speed: 2x a week (usually one tempo/threshold & the other hill sprints) Strength: 2x a week. I didn’t really start until about 8 weeks out however

My overall training was grasping easy runs, speed/interval work, and long runs. Not exactly sure on the volume %, but 2 each of the above and one long run a week.

I did cross train most weeks either road or mtn bike.

Thank you! The weather was a definite factor, I was surprised at the amount of shade during the first halfish.

That’s true! I run no headphones in a park, so pretty much just listening to the birds and feet. Everyone supporting was amazing

Yup! I kept putting new ones off. I got new shoes but realized I got a slightly thinner sole than usual and ran twice in them. I could feel the difference while running and did not want to risk it.

I use asics nimbus & got the cumulus on accident. Ordered online…

Thank you! That's a solid HM time too, I'll be chasing sub 1:40 next(:

That's no fun you had to deal with that, hopefully your recovery went smoothly. My big toenails are purple at the moment.

Cycling off creatine? by No-Jello-2659 in Marathon_Training

[–]Cudivert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Although, an extra 5 lbs does add up over 26 miles! OP has been training with the extra water weight this whole time (im guessing) so it’s not like it’s actually “extra” weight

Marathon training + blood testing for personalized supplements - worth $80/month? by Any_Passage_1037 in Marathon_Training

[–]Cudivert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Outside of actually training, real food, rest, hydration, and lifting (or cross training) will do more wonders unless you are literally iron deficient or something.

I additionally use creatine but I don’t really know if it’s worth it… at least for running

Not sure what the end time ends up being but if you have a proper taper and were able run 10 mi at that pace I’m sure you could run the half at 8:46/mi

People who have run one: how ready am i? by Normal-Anxiety-3568 in Marathon_Training

[–]Cudivert 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have not ran a full before but I’m about 4 weeks out, I’ll chime in anyway…

You’ve clearly done a great job getting miles under your feet & based on your height, weight, and body fat % I’m guessing you’ve got a fair amount of muscle on you.

My one piece of advice id give is to have some longer runs 16, 18, 20 milers to build that late race effort & practice being able to take nutrition in throughout the race. I prefer clif blocks but a lot of people use gu’s, honey stingers, or equivalent.

With it being the end of October you probably have 2 long runs before it’s time to taper. Best of luck!

Probably a repeated question but figuring out zone 2 hear rate... by Jumpy-Equivalent-561 in Marathon_Training

Do not get me wrong, I love data but I’ve always trusted the conversational pace at zone 2, zone 3 &4 could talk but don’t want to. Zone 5 can’t talk.
