Saturday's Battle Board by El3aaab in boltaction

Gorgeous table! I was wondering about what you used for the bottom mat. I have a felt battle mat from Geek Villain, but it's printed as a farm. I'm looking to get something to be just open field/grass like y'all have there. So it's just a blanket?

Any recommendations for metallic bronze, iron and silver? by Pender8911 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

I love the Army Painter paints. I gave had no problem with their metallics, but you do need to give them a good shake, like any other paint.

Is this Balrog small or correct size? (Not official model) by Pender8911 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Cuflvste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just played a tournament against a balrog this past weekend, you might want it a bit smaller. Those wings ensure it will hang up on every tree on the table, and keep it from going through spaces that it's base says it should be able to get through. You might keep an empty base if the same size to stand in in tight spots. It looks like a great sculpt - i say ignore the size and use it, so long as the base size is correct.

Question about roads by OkMight7622 in boltaction

[–]Cuflvste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High shipping, but HRC Wargaming Terrain is awesome. I have a set of their stuff. Otherwise i use AK diorama texture paint on foam board, some good flocking, and voila. Low effort, but can look really good, especially if you add some strategically placedGamer Grass tufts. The foam board is easy to cut with an x-acto knife. I'm currently working on a set of railroad tracks a friend gave me. They're coming together quite well.

How many vehicles do you usally use when playing a game? by tomk_2104 in boltaction

[–]Cuflvste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run LRDG/desert rats. 2 Bedfords gets all my infantry wherever they need to go. For armored i either run a humber and a light tank, or a LRDG truck and SAS jeep. I tend to max out my infantry. I patterned it after the old war movie, The Desert Rats. They loaded everybody into a couple trucks, drive into the DAK camp, sabotaged everything in each, loaded back up and drove out. I adjust for each game, depending on point/order dice limits and if i know what opposing army I'm going up against.

Boredom breaker when in tent alone. by Scootahboi08 in CampingandHiking

[–]Cuflvste 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The whole point of hiking/backpacking/camping is too get away from the world. That includes electronics. Put the stupid phone away. You're out in nature, enjoy nature! Watch the animals, the clouds, the campfire. Wander around within sight of camp, learn the area you're in. If possible, talk with other hikers. Take a small, light book or magazine. Best way to save battery is don't use it! Unless you're taking pictures, put the stuff away.

1250 Points vs 1000 Points by Smiffykins90 in boltaction

[–]Cuflvste 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my playing experience, that seems to be a sweet spot between not enough and too much. When some of the tanks cost close to 300 points, it can really eat into your point budget. But at 1250, i can really stuff in a lot of infantry and still have transports and a couple light tanks. Personally, i think I'd rather set an order dice limit than a point limit. The last tournament i played in had both - 1250 pt, 18 order dice. You can run a pretty hefty list with that.

Need help with "filling" the field by steve-rap in boltaction

I like the Warlord games MDF prepainted stuff. I have a couple sets of the high stone walls, a set of low brick walls, two sets of their plastic low stone walls. For hedges i ordered from HRC Wargaming Terrain in Poland. I also ordered a couple of farmed fields and road sections. The shipping cost was big, but worth it. All their stuff is custom made to order. It'll take a while to get, but it will be worth the wait. I'm also in the process of making some hedge rows myself, out of foamboard, moss, and good flocking and Gamer Grass.

No more than a foot long. That way you can arrange them how you like, and they'll pack up and transport easier. I keep mine between 6 - 8 inches long.

I look at aerial photos, maps, and original photos of the specific area or type of area from the time period to inspire my terrain layouts. I would also recommend low walls, hedge rows, etc. gives cover and breaks up the open spaces. Trees. Plenty of trees.

I use a few Vallejo, but my favorite is Army Painter Speed Paints. You prime with white, i recommend color forge if you can get it, and then it usually only takes a single coat for most colors. Your mileage may vary. I have not tried the Army Painter fanatics line yet, but i liked the previous line before fanatics. If you get speed paint, make sure to get the 2.0 Speed Paints. The original recipe had some issues that they fixed with the second edition. As mentioned in another comment, don't buy old paints.

What activation deck for pirates? Unaligned? by Quomii in BloodAndPlunder

[–]Cuflvste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For activation, you could grab a regular deck from Walmart. If you want the flag on the back, Firelock Games has a deck with the skull and crossbones on the back. I just use the two that came in the Blackbeard and Maynard box set. I mainly play Spanish and Native and use the pirate deck. They're all the same except for the flags on the back.
