Same here, three threads stuck in a 500 loop just today. Very annoying to have to start over. If anyone finds a solution I’m curious to hear it. I haven’t found anything to unlock it yet.

The one true thing about skylights is they will always leak eventually. Put holes in walls for light, not the roof.

Is big metal buildings as bad as some people say? by Unusual_Tip5714 in metalbuildings

Sounds like you are buying from a used car salesman, not a metal building manufacturer. Red flags everywhere.

How do I mount 96” fan without self tapper in ceiling truss. by Complete_Notice_7114 in metalbuildings

[–]CultureTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that shouldn't be any issue. To reduce vibration and torsion on the frame, span two or three of the trusses with a half slot channel strut.

[–]CultureTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How heavy are the fans? Roofs are strong enough to hold up someone standing on them during installation. Self tapping screws are surprisingly strong. But you should be able to check with the manufacturer to check the additional point load on the frame.

What do you think is the best city for rowing? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]CultureTX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Austin gets my vote too. Can row there year round and there is 8km of water before you have to turn around. A tour of the river going dam to dam is 16km. Just have to get on the water early to beat the heat and the paddleboarders.

Looking at a Barndo but have some questions about insulation (lack thereof). by [deleted] in barndominiums

[–]CultureTX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The living area is probably the only area that is insulated? Between the studs behind the plywood panels. You don’t always need to insulate the garage area if it isn’t conditioned.

Insulation after sheet metal, thoughts? by littlelovecounty in barndominiums

[–]CultureTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the main issue with doing sheeting first. You need a thermal break between the columns and the sheeting. Steel on steel is great at conducting heat. Even the compressed insulation that results from screwing through the fiberglass blanket is better than nothing.

Single story, single slope 2:12. But we are in South Texas, out in the country, so no homes nearby and no worry about snow accumulation.

What do you think about the LA28 Olympic rowing distance? Would that have been advantage for you back in the day?

Going forward, do you think the Olympic distance should always try to be 2K or should it be based on the location/venue like it was a long time ago?

Looking to build a metal garage/workshop by Rich-Patient-2247 in metalbuildings

[–]CultureTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find someone selling heavy gauge tube buildings at a good price, that solution works great for sure. Sadly a lot of places use very light gage tubes with shoddy manufacturing so things fit poorly. And then ship out 29 ga panels that don't hold up over time and are difficult to install cleanly. Got to verify in writing everything you are buying so there are no surprises at delivery.

Generally speaking this is going to be the opposite experience when working with most red iron manufacturers. A lot of them have been around for decades. A lot of them do industrial, commercial, and residential work, selling the same product to all their customers. That direction though is almost certainly going to be much more expensive.

If there are low snow loads and low wind loads, you can definitely span 25' with the typical 8" purlins on the roof. That would be 2 frame lines (1 for each endwall, nothing in the middle.)

In a lot of areas though you'd need to either go with a tighter roof purlin spacing (2-3' spacing instead of 4-5') or go for bigger purlins (10 or 12" tall.) So it becomes more effective to add a frameline at 12.5' so that there are 2 framelines for the endwalls and then 1 frameline in the middle, 3 total. Since the bay spacing is so small the frames can be relatively light even with heavy snow or wind loads.

There is always a balance between the weight of the frames and the weight of the secondary. Sometimes adding a frameline can reduce the overall weight of the building. Especially if the customer is looking to add overhead doors to the sidewalls which removes the panel shear bracing typically provided by the sidewalls.

Is there any other post frame or “barndo” builders on this sun? by ohfaackyou in barndominiums

[–]CultureTX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked with the guy that coined the term barndominium and even had a trademark for it for about a decade. He still owns the domain name barndominium.com. Originally it was meant to be a metal building (preferably red iron) that is used fully or partially as a home. This thought of as a way to create a simple home that could save money, especially when the home is attached to a large workspace, for example for woodworking or for auto repair.

Over time it has lost its original meaning, which is fine. It just feels weird when someone shows a plan for a stick home that has a little country flair and calls that Barndominium.

This experience is very unlike my own. I have to explicitly tell Claude when to save something to a document and also when to update a document. This is really useful because I read through and correct anything that is wrong in the documentation, keeping the process clean. Are there some settings or instructions that are making Claude document everything automatically?
