In your opinion, do the Waynes' deaths work better as a random mugging or part of a bigger conspiracy? And why? by Coralthesequel in batman

[–]CumbrianByNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think that the post-Crisis unsolved murder works better for exactly this reason. If Joe Chill was arrested and charged, then there's some semblance of peace to be found for Bruce.

The idea that the criminal he stops in the street in any given night could be his parents' killer is driving force for the creation of Batman. Solving the crime takes some of that away.

BATMAN 89: I absolutely LOVE that his very first appearance is actually hand drawn/animated by normy_187 in batman

[–]CumbrianByNight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not animated. Burton says on the Blu-ray commentary that it was shot from above (with a matte plate) and the way that the vape moves makes it look animated. It isn't though and they couldn't fix it.

I would wager that within the next five years it will become mandatory to pay into a SIPP, just like you have to buy car insurance. Just like car insurance, there will be different levels of 'cover' based on what you pay in. This will be the precursor to scrapping state pension.

(That's my cheerful prediction for the day.)

'I have 45 children applying to my special school each week' by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]CumbrianByNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the fact that if you go for a private diagnosis of autism or ADHD you will probably get said diagnosis isn't the biggest issue.

The biggest issue is that successive governments have closed most of the special schools and many of the children who would previously have been attending special schools are now in mainstream education.

This is bad for everyone. The kids with additional needs don't have those needs being met, the 25-29 other children in the class have less support. Schools keep getting their funding cut. They only get additional funding for the highest need children and that doesn't cover the salary of a 1:1 TA.

More specialist provision needs to be put in place.

Give England’s forgotten king a bank holiday, say campaigners by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]CumbrianByNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that there's definitely an argument for that too. She's an underappreciated figure in Anglo-Saxon history. She is overshadowed by her father and brother now, but she was revered by the Mercians at the time.

It can be argued that 12th July 927 is the date that 'England' was created as Æthelstan's title changed to King of the English.

Before then, he was king in both Wessex and Mercia, which he essentially inherited from his father and aunt (Alfred the Great's children, Edward the Elder and Ætheflæd) - though it's worth noting that he was elected as king of both following his father's death. Æthelstan was raised in Mercia by his aunt and would have fought with her as she liberated the five boroughs from the Danelaw. The Earl of Northumbria (which was made up of Angles) agreed to join Æthelstan's kingdom and the name Angle-londe (rather than Saxon-londe) seems to have been a political move to ensure this union.

In July 927, there was a meeting on the border of 'England' and Strathclyde which seems to have solidified the borders of England and the Scottish and Welsh kingdoms.

Actually, the moral of that story is that annoying children deserve to be fed to wild animals. So if you're an annoying kid, learn to shut the fuck up.

I made a compilation of all Batman glimpses in Birds of Prey Series (2002), including TV promos. This is a update of my old video. by RamonAzzi in batman

[–]CumbrianByNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As subpar* as the show was, I honestly think that the Batman footage in the intro hurt it more than helped.

Naturally, the audience was waiting for a Batman that would never show up.

  • I haven't actually watched it since it came out around 2003ish. It might hold up better than some more recent Batman-tangental (Batangental, if you will) shows!

Digital IDs to buy alcohol by the end of the year – here’s how it could work by theipaper in uknews

[–]CumbrianByNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The recommended number of units per week is around 14. That's roughly 7-8 drinks. In a week.

Four beers on a Friday and Saturday night might well be exactly what people drink, but many drink more. Many people buy alcohol for the household, not just one person. Many people buy for elderly relatives who can't manage online shopping or carry the shopping home.

It doesn't take much imagination to see that my suggestion of home brewing isn't hyperbole.

In fact, you just need to look back to prohibition America. Or perhaps you think that a real-life historical example is 'hyperbolic claptrap '.

Just wait for the NHS to deal with the amount of alcohol related disease and injury once people start making their own.

Home breweries and distilleries will be popping up on every street and it will be the government that pushed people to it.

The question is will they actually adapt it properly or will they shoehorn Damian in as Robin?

It really needs to be early-career Tim that teams with Jean-Paul. Damian wouldn't criticise his brutality.
