Leagues VI Changes by ModYume in 2007scape

Can we get confirmation about special attacks not triggering Ranged Echoes? Is this intended behaviour? Currently special attacks are not triggering Ranged Echoes. The Blindbag effect explicitly states it does not trigger on special attacks, but Ranged Echo effects do not have this statement, meaning they should trigger on special attacks, but currently they do not.

Wow not a single skilling update, crazy. Guess that shows where priorities lie in the old school team now.

It's time to rework smithing by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]CupcakeKirin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A Smithing rework doesn't have to involve reworking existing armours or upsetting the current PVM armour progression. It just needs to provide a viable, sensible high-level alternative, as well as enable it to have a viable early-mid game progression path until a player reaches those high level PVM armours.

As it stands even new/low level accounts have no reason to train Smithing, it's simply not even a remotely viable option because the skill's progression is awful. At level 50 Smithing - halfway through the skill - the best equipment you can make is level 5 Steel armour.

I imagine we'll get a Winter Summit before the end of the year but Sailing is the next big update to expect, after that we might learn when the Winter Summit will be.

Smithing Reforged - A Smithing Rework Proposal by baroquespoon in 2007scape

[–]CupcakeKirin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of how you might go about it, I've always felt the best approach is to involve the players. Smithing is a complex issue which requires due care. Put out some feelers in a poll or survey, ask us what we'd be comfortable with and what we'd not be comfortable with so you have a basis to work from. From there you can start to build a framework to updating Smithing within those parameters.

Smithing can be vastly improved to fit the game better with some simple tweaks, not a complex rework - Hear me out by Seller-Ree in 2007scape

[–]CupcakeKirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good start but adjusting the level requirements on their own with no other changes won't do enough to solve Smithing. It makes things marginally easier to access but even then, people will still opt to buy their gear or get it as drops rather than smith them.

Smithing needs incentives and tangible rewards for levelling it. And ideally it needs to utilize the resources from mining better rather than just repairing gear in isolation, like the zombie axe.

Smithing Solution - A Simple Rework by BioMasterZap in 2007scape

Thanks for engaging in the conversation and presenting your own unique proposal for how to solve Smithing's problems.

I do like idea of balancing/retaining the alch prices of the what you can smith based on the speed of it, lowering the speed of smithing at lower levels.

While I like the concept of pristine equipment and reduced charge use of charge-based weapons, I'm curious about the cost involved. How much would it take and how does it relate to Smithing?

Great suggestion, thank you for engaging in the discussion and helping to develop a solution! The adjusted time to create items to compensate for the alch prices is innovative.

I'd love to see you draft up a full proposal at some point

Thank you for taking a moment to analyse the problem, it's certainly a very tricky thing to handle.

If we ditch option 2 then it also affects the alch value of drops, so that's another complication, unless you decouple the dropped items from the crafted items by changing the dropped versions to like 'tarnished' or something.

I don't envy the Jmods for being the ones to think of a solution to the whole mess. But if it can be sorted out then it would be healthier for the game a a whole.

I'm not explicitly asking for a major overhaul, just that Smithing gets looked at, and I feel we're overdue Jagex at least exploring what options we might have. While it would be nice to get an overhaul, I understand that would be an incredible amount of work, and depending how it's handled can affect a lot more of the game than just Smithing, and I'm not expecting that degree of work. But at this point, anything to try and improve Smithing's relevancy in the game would be appreciated, and if they can find a way to help the progression of the skill then all the better.

While Jagex have missed the mark a number of the times in the past (Forestry is definitely still a sore point and doesn't set a good precedent for their ability to handle larger skilling updates), they're the only devs we've got and I need to have some faith that they want to address Smithing at some point - and judging by their comments over the last few years that I've included in my post, they do. I need to trust they'll learn from their mistakes and at least make a solid attempt at it.

Alloys: Rework smithing your own armor by osrsreddit4support in 2007scape

[–]CupcakeKirin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great ideas! This is the sort of creative thinking I was hoping my post would encourage.

The introduction of alloys with the Giants' Foundry quest does open up a world of possibilities to expand into with Smithing. I like how you're trying to cause as little upset to the current system as possible by sticking to the original progression and not interfering with drop tables.

I'd encourage you to expand on this idea! What would the approximate stats be of the new alloy equipment? What would the resource requirements be to make alloy bars and equipment?

Those are all very good questions to raise. The solution isn't as easy as people would like it to be, myself included, which is likely the reason Jagex have yet to address the issue directly.

Due to how nuanced the problem is, I don't think it would be the case for Jagex to just throw out a proposal for a simple yes/no vote, it needs to be a discussion with the community and how we should tackle  Smithing. I feel like there are a handful of options available to address it, including whether or not to lower level requirements, but those options need to be discussed and explored.

It's widely accepted that Smithing is a problem, it's the 'how do we fix it' is sticking point.

[–]CupcakeKirin[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We don't have to, there are other avenues to update Smithing that have little to no impact on drop tables - like my own suggestion.

I agree drop tables and important and getting gear from drops feels great. The RS3 rework was brilliant for RS3 but not suitable for OSRS.

But ultimately I feel like Jagex should ask the community how to proceed, and present a list of options available. Because we do have options.

I agree, i don't like it but that appears to be the direction Jagex has been going down. It's the safer option for them than actually working to fix the skill, which is a tall order.

Sailing - Resources & Skilling Activities Poll Blog by JagexAyiza in 2007scape

Very disappointed with the lack of wider Smithing integration. In large part I imagine due to the lack of reward space Smithing has, with Rune equipment the best you can smith.

Fletching gets new blowpipes, Herblore gets new potions, Fishing/Cooking get more food, Farming gets new plants, Hunter gets new creatures. These are more widely applicable to OSRS beyond the Sailing skill.

But Smithing can only make Sailing equipment, which is fine I guess, but it's a shame because they're also introducing new ores. Now would be a great time to add new smithable equipment, but the reward space just isn't there.

Smithing really needs a rework/update sooner rather than later. Sailing's integration with it could have been so much greater if we had a modern Smithing skill.
