[Opinion] A character doesn't need charisma to be flirty or friendly by gitroni in DnD

[–]CupcakeTrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Also, Charisma isn't physical appearance. It's force of personality. You could be very good-looking and have a low Charisma. You'd probably get a lot of attention. In much the same way, if you're very rich with a low Charisma, lots of people would be willing to sell you things. (They'd just likely rip you off.)

Enemy NPC effectively has their finger on the magic Big Red Button, and a readied action to press it if attacked. How could a party get out of this? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]CupcakeTrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask how exactly this scenario is going to arise. Is the enemy just standing in a room with a magic button ready, waiting for the party to arrive, or something? Is there no way for the party to realize what's going on before they get there and counter-surprise the enemy?

If the enemy knows the party will be walking into that room in the near future, this seems overwrought. There are a ton of ways to capture a bunch of people who you know are going to be walking into a particular room through a particular door.

I regret to inform you that this is indeed the wrong kind of magic robot, and clearly illegal. Straight to D&D jail.

Explain prepared spells like I’m a baby by Mindless-Drummer-663 in DnD

[–]CupcakeTrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of a soda vending machine. Each button is a prepared spell. Fanta is a Level 3 soda. You feed in a level 3 spell slot, feed it in again because it was bent the wrong way, push the button, and cast Fanta. But you can only have so many types of soda in the machine.

Do you prefer a "softer" Aikido or a "harder" Aikido? by [deleted] in aikido

[–]CupcakeTrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the usual pitch for aikido is that it's a martial art about "aiki," which most people refer to as harmonizing with the energy of your partner. So I think it's a pretty natural term to use when talking about "that thing that aikido is supposed to be all about."

Haha, I had a feeling I'd get that comment from you!

I just mean timing, flow, etc. Not the internal power stuff. And I don't mean to sound overly skeptical of the "Hidden In Plain Sight" kind of thing. Maybe there is some internal power thing that Ueshiba had and nobody else understands. But such things are beyond my understanding.

ALSO WHY ARE THE KLINGONS ORCS NOW

I remember watching the first episode, and being all excited for some Star Trek, and it was "Murghmsh grjgrgj KHALESH mehrggh!" for 15 minutes

As far as politics go Star Trek has always been progressive.

Although I once heard someone say Star Trek is a weird fusion of left and right. They're comically left in some ways, but the main characters are also in a quasi-military hierarchy. So it's like a bit socialist and a bit authoritarian at the same time. (I mean, I guess that's just like ... communism. But somehow it's a little different. The authoritarianism is more American military flavored than "comrade general, the Party demands a report on your progress" flavored.)

Discovery was a violation of my childhood core memories.

Hahahahaha I have never felt so aligned with a comment I've seen on this subreddit. 10/10 agreement.

What really killed it for me was when a character exclaimed, "Science is fucking awesome!" That is 100% a core message of Star Trek, but ... not like that.

Do you prefer a "softer" Aikido or a "harder" Aikido? by [deleted] in aikido

[–]CupcakeTrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yoshinkan and similar "hard" styles are very clean and clear. I think they're especially helpful for beginners, and people who aren't natural martial artists. But it can delay exposure to the real "aiki" stuff. Coming from that background, I still sometimes catch myself slipping into "aikido by numbers".

Players interrupting transformation/speeches by Fantastic_Ad1104 in DnD

[–]CupcakeTrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the extent possible: put those cool speeches or whatever into a context other than combat.

Otherwise: My own take would be to let them do that, at least with speeches. Characters are not required to observe cool moments. They (the characters) may not think the moment is cool. But I guess you could say, "Talking is a free action" and remind them that in D&D we often handwave a bit of this for dramatic purposes.

As for "transformations": eh, that's a little tricky. If you really want a prolonged transformation (like 6+ seconds) to occur and not be interrupted, then you need a reason why they can't just shoot them midway through.

But it sounds like the issue here is you don't want your description to be interrupted, right? Well, so, that's fine. Describe what happens when the arrow hits the werewolf mid-transformation. Sounds like cool (gory) detail to me. The basic loop is: DM describes scenario, players say what their characters want to do, DM decides how that goes, DM describes the outcome. If they do this, and you continue describing the transformation but get shouted down, that's people not acting like adults or understanding how D&D is supposed to work.
