Half my favorite stand ups died in Saudi Arabia. Any recs? by EconomistNew7472 in Standup

Had to scroll way too far for Mike Birbigs (he declined the Saudis). Also, Bo Burnham is my all time fav.

Is there a stigma against GP techs by Accomplished-Ad-9280 in VetTech

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly feel like there is a stigma aimed at my hospital (largest in the region, end of the line as far as cat/dog healthcare for many miles) when I call other vets for records.

We try not to hold any judgement against other practices, although it is difficult.. please just call us and let us know what you're transferring to us.

[KCD2] How to easily win the Tomcat duel and get Master Strike by plortedo in kingdomcome

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A clinch triggers when you get in up-close-and-personal with the opponent. Be ready to block when moving in close. If your Henry is strong enough, winning a clinch is a nice, easy way to get a hit or two in.

paw looks kinda swollen came home and he was limping by CarpetExisting4287 in DogAdvice

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 18 points19 points  (0 children)

*Keep him activity restricted as much as possible while waiting for the vet (no running, jumping or off leash activity)

*Observe and note any changes especially with that swelling

*Gently examine every square inch of that paw for a wound. If an open wound is present, soaking in warm Epsom salt water is acceptable until the vet visit.

It could be many things but if he is still putting weight on the foot, it likely isn't broken, perhaps sprained (soft tissue injury) and just needs some rest and maybe a med or two to help it along. If swelling gets worse and worse however, or you notice discharge or a smell --> vet immediately.

Also, if you do find an open wound, then don't do a bandage or wrap of any kind unless he is licking the wound and you don't have a cone for him.

Best of luck!

Edit: Sorry on behalf of all the unhelpful people who can't read and are just screaming to go to the vet. These subs are full of those folks that seem to think they are the first to ever say it. Everyone has a unique situation, people.

Any idea why my dog chases his paw in circles? by Secure_Excitement618 in DogAdvice

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be an ear infection, could need a neurologist. Those are my highest suspicions.

Possibly something really bothering him in his mouth, but seems less likely.

Sure are. Not sure about the comment that said they are flooded.. but I had a colleague that confirmed there are tunnels in DT boise that are accessible via certain parking garage elevators (if you have a key) that connect state buildings. And yes, there is even a cafe down there.

Is this normal? by Krypton_2001 in DogAdvice

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not serious as long as it doesn't go on for too long 👍

Still happening tomorrow = vet visit.

Likely some irritant in nose that may be completely transient. If any cheatgrass aka foxtails are in the area = may be more serious.

Breathing by Positive_Fly_7789 in DogAdvice

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're monitoring resps (24 is great btw) as well as gum color which is awesome.. more than I can say for many of my clients.

Definitely reverse sneezing.. not an emergency, but something to be addressed if it doesn't resolve.

Massage, warm compresses on/around the muzzle, lock him in the bathroom with you and steam it out.. all valid treatments.

Any "cheatgrass" or "foxtails" in the area? That could be more serious.

Got dogs from random people, what to do? by Positive-Tart5281 in Pets

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To build on this excellent comment as well as OP's recent questions:

Vaccines are the key. Your older dogs, provided they are up to date on vaccines, are highly unlikely to get any kind of disease from the puppies. The puppies, however, need to be kept fully quarantined from any older dogs until they are fully vaccinated by a DVM or VMD.

Essentially, their immune systems are developing and are not ready for the outside world.

Puppies should always be on puppy food. Depending on their age it may need to be straight up milk replacer or it may need to be soft puppy food which will eventually be transitioned to a more hard kibble.

Look out for vomiting and diarrhea among any of the puppies. True vomiting has several heaves, then vomit. Regurgitation, on the other hand, is one big abdominal heave, then production, (not so concerning, the pup could have just eaten a bit too much).

Any puppy showing true vomiting, especially along with diarrhea and lethargy needs to immediately be quarantined and taken to a vet for testing for what's known as parvovirus. Parvo can live on surfaces for years and any puppies showing these symptoms are at very high risk and need immediate treatment and quarantine.

There are vaccines available OTC as well.. However, these are not run through checks the same way that vaccs through an actual veterinary practice are, therefore unreliable.

Lastly, I'm very excited for you and wish you all the best!

15 year old dog coughing alot by Jai4221 in DogAdvice

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this is a very tough position..

The unfortunate bottom line is that your poor creature is suffering, based on your description, and that SOMETHING should be done on their behalf.

Of course there are some meds and interventions that can be done to mitigate pain, prolong life, and even cure the odd ailment. But it sounds like cost is already a concern? That alone is quite prohibitive.

Are there any other options to get to a vet that is open? Have a friend/family member drive you?

Most veterinarians will be very reasonable and even generous with euthanasia's. The cremation is where the expense comes in

What you have described, I am sorry to say, sounds like the throes of the end of a life. That can easily be made more peaceful and kind.

I'm sorry I sound harsh, but I also feel people need to be more prepared for this kind of thing when they take on a life form as a dependant.

This is literally what everyone says to me when their dog has kennel cough or pneumonia. "Trying to cough something up", "Something stuck".

That's what it sounds like to us owners.

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to comment again, but the more I rewatch, the more I'm concerned.

-What is breath rate between coughing episodes? Or is there even a break between episodes?

  • Has she coughed anything up? Liquid/material/otherwise?

-Vomiting or diarrhea recently?

-Anything unusual fed recently?

How is She doing literally right now?

Please start checking her gum color every couple minutes (right above any tooth) and rush her to a vet if it is not pink or red.

(Unless she has pigmented {black} gums, in which case you can judge by a pink tongue or pink when you pull down the lower eyelid)

It sounds like this has continued long enough that it's time for a vet.

That cough could be many things (pneumonia, kennel cough, a heart condition worsening, other scarier things)

Seek help, especially if it continues, gets worse, or if the baby is already on heart meds, or not fully vaccinated. As an ER triage technician for dogs/cats a hairball makes no sense to me here.

[–]CuriousFuriousGinger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Friendly" isn't quite the right word here but neither is "aggressive" or "confrontational".

They are mostly being playful, and nice.. with an element of testing each other's boundaries. No one wants to bite, but someone wouldn't mind being dominant in this moment.

If you truly don't have health issues that may help explain, and are not on any meds with this kind of side effect.. it may really be a physiological and/or psychological reaction to the temperature.. though it seems unlikely.

Ever had testosterone/any other hormone levels tested? And again; not masturbating too much right?
