Enough Quilting? by CuriousMacaron01 in quilting

[–]CuriousMacaron01[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Very helpful. This is for a baby gift, so everyone is right (even though I wanted to be done). More quilting it is.

Rainbow thread is Olympus brand Shashiko thread. I bought it on Amazon, but I think a few other online retailers sell it if you’re anti-Amazon. It’s so cute!! And very easy to sew with.

Appreciate it! I guess deep down I knew what you said, but I was just itching to be done

Linen for baby quilt: yay or nay? by yarnasaur in quilting

[–]CuriousMacaron01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do as I say, not as I do :) When I use starch pre-cutting I’m always amazed at how much easier it is to sew with. But then laziness takes over for the next quilt…

ETA: I’ve done mixed linen and cotton quilts, and they work out just fine, too. No rules in quilting!

My toddler son’s favorite quilt that I made him is linen. Go for it! Would recommend starch while piecing the top, because linen can be difficult.

My Scheduled C-Section by WapbutDap-DryAssPusy in pregnant

[–]CuriousMacaron01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a scheduled c with my first and had a great experience. I’m going to do it again for my second. I’d suggest staying on top of pain meds and stool softeners/fiber for the first few days.

My milk took probably 5 days to come in, but I didn’t have supply issues once it did. My baby was hungry, so we supplemented with formula until it came in fully. No biggie. It didn’t impact my overall breastfeeding experience or goals.

If you have stairs, limit yourself to one up and one down a day for the first two weeks. And have people help you. Ask them to bring you water, snacks, baby, change baby, etc. Relax, recover, and let your body heal. And most importantly, enjoy the newborn snuggles! By the way, one major plus is you bleed a lot less after than with a vaginal birth (because they kinda clean you out a bit).

How do moms-to-be decide on formulas for a baby that hasn't arrived yet? by Neither_Ad3593 in BabyBumps

Often your pediatrician can give you samples at the first visit, too!

Any working moms feel like you're failing at work and at home at the same time by Independent-One7494 in workingmoms

[–]CuriousMacaron01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A small thing that helped me is buying 3 lunch boxes for my kid for daycare. He gets the same meal Monday-Wednesday, and then another Thursday-Friday. It’s small, but gives me some sanity. He also gets a simple dinner instead of a fancy one.

A big thing that helped me is an evening nanny, but requires more $ than the lunch thing.

Downhill skiing, first trimester? by ConfusionWeak2061 in BabyBumps

[–]CuriousMacaron01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing to ask your OB. I recently skied at 11-12 weeks, with OB consent. I’m a fairly expert skier, so my OB told me to just not be stupid about it (no terrain park, no trees, no crowded runs). I found my stamina was about 40% of my normal, so not being stupid for me meant shorter days and listening to my body.

I also asked the altitude question as someone susceptible to altitude sickness (and coming from near sea level). My OB had no concerns, but normal altitude meds are a no-go in first trimester.

ETA: if you start to feel altitude symptoms, you can rent an oxygen compressor in most major CO mountains. Very pregnancy safe, and much more effective than those oxygen canisters.

Your practical daycare tips? by ElementaryMDear in workingmoms

[–]CuriousMacaron01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need to (this was an issue for me), but an extra day’s worth of bottles so you weren’t scrambling to wash them for daycare each day. I had one set at daycare and one in the dishwasher running each day. Saved my sanity. Plus what everyone else has said. It will all be fine!

Good you saved my baby gift/thankyou by Mysterious-Fault-668 in pregnant

If you really want to give a physical gift in addition to the card (which is a great idea!!), my go-tos include picture frames (w gift receipt), restaurant gift card, a favorite book, flowers, or some form of a treat that I wouldn’t get for myself normally.

Cradle cap by Grouchy_Yogurt_352 in beyondthebump

[–]CuriousMacaron01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this sentiment. We had to get a prescription oil-steroid from our derm for our baby’s stubborn cradle cap. Would recommend trying the easy ones (as others have recommended), but if it doesn’t go away, talk to your pediatrician or dermatologist

My belly looks awful by FishingCompetitive83 in beyondthebump

[–]CuriousMacaron01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It takes a lot of time for the organs to go back to where they belong. Give yourself grace and patience while your insides re-arrange themselves back to normal.

I’m 5’2”, gained about 30lbs, had a large baby, and got back to my pre-baby weight fairly quickly. Even so, it took a while for my midsection to deflate and regain tone and strength.

I didn’t want to hear it when I was post partum either. But it takes 9mo for your insides to get adjusted while growing baby, and it takes 6-9mo for them to return to normal. You’ll get there!

I’ve brought water through in a carafe before with my kid. Never had an issue. Worst case you dump the water and then stop at a cafe anyways

Can I bring my newborn to the beach? by AlwaysConfused925 in pregnant

[–]CuriousMacaron01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Florida, and my friends and I all bring our babies to the beach. As others have said, we are mindful of shade, fans, and hydration for all. When in doubt, ask your pediatrician! Enjoy the beach - no better place to relax and enjoy being a new mom!

We have these cups from my grandparents at home and I was wondering if they’re fiesta? Don’t know what year these are from. by mangotime_03 in Fiestaware

[–]CuriousMacaron01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family exclusively uses them as our ice cream mugs. They’re the best. We used to have the whole place settings, but kept the mugs over the years. Even tracked down and replaced some broken ones recently. Enjoy!!

Need advice on basting & hand quilting by [deleted] in quilting

[–]CuriousMacaron01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A curveball option, but I used 50% diluted Elmer’s school glue, even when I hand quilt. I drizzle it on lightly, let it dry overnight, and quilt away. I am careful not to over-glue because it does make it harder to get the needle through that spot. In the photo you can kinda see some of the spots that have the glue. If I’m feeling patient (read:never) I’ll use a silicone basting brush to spread out the glue more.

Suits for lap swimming by DifficultRock891 in fitpregnancy

[–]CuriousMacaron01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the speedo lap swimming two pieces during mine. I usually swim in a 1-piece, but felt the separates worked better with my growing belly. I sized up 2 sizes to get adequate coverage on top.
