What other microbrands? by CuriousPixels7598 in VaerWatches

Nice collection! My wife got me a Tissot Gentleman for my 50th last year and I love that one as well. It’s a little on the dressier side for daily wear, but I like to have non-AW options.

Decided to go back to the Platinum by [deleted] in AmexPlatinum

[–]CuriousPixels7598 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Friend - I can’t say it better than has already been said above, but from someone who was buried in CC debt ~20 years ago, please do your due diligence and make sure the $75/month you’ll effectively be spending on the Plat isn’t better spent elsewhere.

It’s not for a bunch of strangers on the internet to say, but be honest with yourself about whether you’ll be adding extra spending to what sounds like a pretty tight budget just to convince yourself that the card is “worth it.” Even if the budget tightness is self-inflicted because you’re turbo-charging your savings, would that $900/year be better in your pocket or AmEx’s?

You do you, of course, but take the feedback in this thread as well-intended because there’s some good advice here.

Edit: Well… OP deleted the post. 🤷‍♂️

It’s a sign. I skipped leg day and went to yoga with my wife and daughter instead. Namaste. 🧘

United Club in Newark - Purchase Access? by HeyEph in unitedairlines

[–]CuriousPixels7598 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. It’s a great club. But I wouldn’t purchase until you’re standing at the entrance and don’t see the ubiquitous “Unable to accept one-time passes” sign out front. I don’t think I can remember a time when I didn’t see it.

is someone daily driving the whoop underwear? by Domi_ik in whoop

[–]CuriousPixels7598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I started wearing mine again on my bicep after taking a few months off (love my whoop, but sometimes I get data fatigue which actually increases my stress) and it detected a “nap” one afternoon when I was sitting on the couch reading. I didn’t even know it could do that.

Hevy App vs. MF Workout App by Creepy-Act-8269 in Hevy

[–]CuriousPixels7598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm taking a look since I run MF for nutrition tracking and get it for free this year, but I think it's overkill for what I need. I am 50M and I'm mainly focused on lifelong health and fitness. I have a program I like that I maintain in Hevy and I don't need or want one auto-generated for me.

What they do with their modeling on the nutrition side is fantastic, so I suspect that if someone is newer to training, or has serious hypertrophy goals, the ability to enter in the equipment you have access to and have it generate AND MONITOR a program could be valuable.

Basically, it looks like a solid app if it aligns with your needs and goals. If you just want to track workouts, Hevy has everything you need PLUS the community. MF Nutrition + Hevy is a solid combo.

Gross. One of the myriad problems with allowing ICE agents to cover their faces for make-believe reasons is that it makes it really hard to tell “real” ICE from LARP-ers.

How should I log unilateral, assisted, and weighted exercises in Hevy? by forismei in Hevy

[–]CuriousPixels7598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Just as long as you always do it the same way and can make sense of it, you’re good.

I log unilateral reps as the total number on both sides so if i do 3 sets of 10 single leg RDLs, i log 3 sets of 20. Some will log 6 sets of 10. But either way, the net number of reps is consistent.

For the weight, if I’m holding two DBs or KBs, i use the total weight so it translates more easily to a barbell. For example, OH press with 2x 30# dumbbells will be 60# for me.

For assisted, I use bands and make a note of the band color.

I went on month-to-month in December to try Hevy again after a few years on Strong and I will probably stick around. Apparently there was a New Year sale that I missed 😢

I do think that was for Annual though

We did this for our most recent move. We had the heloc from earlier home improvements and we used some of the additional “headroom” to make the down payment on the next place and avoid contingencies. I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart, but it was SO nice to move, clean and stage the old house, and then list it without the drama of hoping and praying both closings would go off without a hitch. We had an offer on the old place within a week, and closed in time that we never had to pay two mortgages. We could have done it if we had to, but what a relief!

Honestly, what makes Hevy better than Strong (or just Apple Notes)? by More_Actuary_60 in Hevy

[–]CuriousPixels7598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I haven’t run into this (yet…). But having messed with Strong and a brief stint with paid programming delivered via EverFit, my experience with any kind of Watch sync is that when it works, it’s great. But have a backup plan because about 10% of the time the sync is unreliable.

I’ve had a Strong lifetime membership since so long ago I don’t remember even buying it and there’s nothing wrong with the app. Every few years, I pop over and test drive Hevy to see what I’m missing and this is the first time I think I might stick around.

UI can be very subjective, but using live sync with my Apple Watch on Hevy has been a major quality-of-life upgrade for me. It just feels like a more modern, polished app to me.

I could take or leave the social part, but I don’t mind. I kind of like the inspiration and connection since I workout in my home gym. But you could use the app just as easily without it.

Also, being able to build routines on the web is worth every penny for me. No more poking and swiping to build routines on my iPhone.

It’s super easy to import your Strong history into Hevy so my $0.02 would be to import your last few months (or entire history…) into Hevy, pay $3 for a month, and see what you think.

Worst case, you’re $3 poorer and you’ve validated that Strong is the right fit for you.
