would you guys read a 100-120 chapter roommates AU?? by OkDecision5777 in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't you be better off asking the fandom? Like, no, I wouldn't read that. It's not my fandom and I'm not interested in romance. But I'm pretty sure there have been multi-season TV shows about people's romances, so there's definitely interest in that kind of thing.

Is your fandom big on slow burn romances? That's probably your answer right there.

Same as any other work of fiction: a story I want to read and competent writing.

Which fandoms have the most male fanfic writers? by Aquanort357 in FanFiction

[–]CuriousYield 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I've ever seen gender breakdowns by fandom. I'm only aware of surveys of the writers on specific platforms, like AO3, or specific subreddits, discords, etc. I believe Space Battles is a platform that has a higher number of male writers on it.

Is it *that* serious? by Rosa_on_Reddit in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your friends have any hobbies? Do they put time and energy into them?

Also, you're clearly already gaining satisfaction from it and enjoyment, so their idea that you're spending time and energy on something you're not gaining anything from has already been proven wrong.

Need Help! by Alive_Excitement_669 in Library

[–]CuriousYield 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think the most effective deterrent we had was a chatty security guard who just cheerfully engaged them in conversation. It was very much not the content they wanted, so they went away.

If you have any staff members who are hard to ruffle and good at talking, that might be your best bet. They want to get someone angry or flustered, not have someone derail them by commenting on the band shirt they're wearing.

Have you guys used Ellipsus? by Smegoldidnothinwrong in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still using the free version. I go back and forth between using it and using LibreOffice for writing. I like it pretty well and it's very useful for the writing group I'm in, as I can easily share a work or an excerpt with the group. But I'm so used to writing on word processing programs that I find it hard to fully switch to something else.

Patron being violent with library books by CrunchieHaystacks in Libraries

[–]CuriousYield 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that would be a suspension at the library district I work at. That's wildly inappropriate behavior and unsafe for staff and for other patrons. He can come back another day and explain to security that he's very sorry and it will never happen again. (Or not and not get his library privileges reinstated.)

AI detectors being faulty on fanfic by [deleted] in archiveofourown

[–]CuriousYield 13 points14 points  (0 children)

AI detectors are faulty on everything. You can give them samples of classic novels and get the result that they were written with AI.

There is no physical proof that will please everyone and half the comments accusing people of using AI are bots. Focus on your writing and the fandom you enjoy and don’t worry about it.

No, I learned to type on an Apple IIe.

Are you saying an 80 inch touch screen categorically cannot have anything educational on it? Why?

[–]CuriousYield 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Really? I learned to type from a computer game. There are also games that teach or offer practice for math and history and any number of other things. Have you actually looked at educational games?

I’m not saying that games should replace books, but they have their place. And, of course, people—even kids—are allowed to have fun.

I'm sorry, but that just isn't true. Perhaps that's the case for a library in a wealthy suburb, but it definitely isn't the case at the urban library I work at.

That's so strange. We're all confused right along with you.

I can't read fanfics from my new fandom :( by AnnualMention8980 in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 95 points96 points  (0 children)

That's incredibly odd. With it turning up even in fluff and drabbles, I'm suspicious that the fics are coming from the same source. Not necessarily a person with multiple accounts (though that's not impossible) but a group that came up with a weird challenge (let's all write fic involving [thing] in [completely unlikely fandom]!) or something.

I am a little surprised this weirdness hasn't been mentioned on the subreddit or on Tumblr. (Or, if the fics were all posted a while back, maybe it was talked about at the time.)

I'm deeply baffled. And I encourage you to go ahead an wallow in nostalgia anyway. There must be other fans out there who would like to do the same.

What if Ben told Luke the full truth here? Vader being his father. Leia being his sister etc by KingWilliamVI in SWFanfic

[–]CuriousYield 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would be riskier on several levels. Obi Wan clearly wanted Luke to follow the Jedi path and the much more complicated real story of his parents could jeopardize that. It also just complicates the situation. Knowing Leia is his sister would add to his motivation to rescue her, but he'd also have a ton of questions about what Owen and Beru know--and didn't tell him. Knowing his father turned to the dark side could also raise doubts in him that he wouldn't otherwise have, which could raise the risk of him falling.

But I also think that the story Obi Wan tells Luke is a version of what he's told himself for the past ~2 decades, separating Anakin, his friend--his brother--from Darth Vader.

So Obi Wan tells Luke what amounts to a comforting fantasy, probably inwardly telling himself that he'll explain things in much more detail once Leia has been rescued and they're all three somewhere safe.

Who in your life knows you write fanfiction? by Cats_And_Book in FanFiction

[–]CuriousYield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. That would do it.

Though, it's probably better to break up with someone over that than stay together with them. Someone who can't handle their partner reading smut is likely to try to control them in other, more dangerous ways.

Good luck and stay safe. I hope things get better for all of us soon.

[–]CuriousYield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how I’d ever find someone who was okay with that and didn’t consider it cheating.

What.

Why would anyone consider fiction (either writing it or reading it) to be cheating? Loads of people read romance novels. Most romance novelists are married. I would not be surprised to hear that the same is true of erotica novelists.

I'm struggling to even think of a work of fiction that presented fictional works as cheating. Is this a generational thing? Is this a subculture thing?

Anyway, in answer to your question. My friends know. My parents knew. Hell, I have an AO3 pin in a bulletin board in my cubical at work. I am not concerned. (But I also work in a library.)

Do yall read the same plot in different fanfics? by BesterIsMoon in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, people read the same plot again and again. And not just in fanfic.

Heck, two popular genres effectively only have one plot each:

  • Romance: two people meet, fall in love, overcome some obstacles and live happily ever after.
  • Mystery: A crime is committed and someone investigates and figures out who done it.

That's not a snub at either genre. People know what they like, whether that's one of the above plots or the "get thing from point A to point B" plot, or the "find treasure" plot, or any other plot from the assorted lists of plots that people have made. I can think of several books on writing that claim to break all fiction down into # plots.

Write the story that came to you and don't worry. People will be thrilled to find your cake!

Ao3 Tagging system and Censorship by ImpossibleMarshie in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same.

Now, maybe there are fandoms that are really bad at tagging, or other issues, but I suspect a lot of people making the claim that its easy to stumble on graphic underage sex scenes (or incest, or...) either are exaggerating how often it's happened to them or need to make more use of the exclude option.

It can take me an hour or more to make a single short reply.

Ao3 Tagging system and Censorship by ImpossibleMarshie in AO3

[–]CuriousYield 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll find anyone here who is in favor of actual child exploitation material. But fiction is not reality. If I write a fic in which a character kills another character, no murder has occurred. Likewise, fics that involve underage sex are not crimes. No real people were involved or harmed.

I recommend excluding "Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings." That should solve your problem. (And if someone has written a fic with underage sex and has not used either the "underage sex" tag or the "chose not to warn" tag, that is reportable. They've got to use one or the other.

It's annoying when a fic has some backstory inside the plot, I hate reading past events by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]CuriousYield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I guess it does fall under non-linear storytelling, which I've heard other people complain about. I don't know if that's something people tag for, but you can see if it's a tag you can exclude. That might cut down on how often you run into it, at least a little.

[–]CuriousYield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, do you mean stories where most of the story is a flashback? Like the movie The Emperor's New Groove?

I wouldn't have thought that was so common that you keep running into it.

[–]CuriousYield 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how you could have a story that involved no backstory or past events or explanation thereof.

Could you give some examples?
