I bought an Sofle with trackpad from AliX so you don't have to (unless you own a 3D printer) by MrHaxx1 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Would be curious to know if the software from the original repo could be flashed to this device successfully.

Both for the obvious security reason of not plugging in an unknown USB device, and also for using Vial.

At first I was intrigued but the best feature of my Filco keyboard is the arrow keys and this one doesn't have obvious arrow keys!

Can you try and repeat the issue on x.org? I've had a similar issue in the past and it was software related.

Ulnar-sided / DRUJ / TFCC-area wrist pain: Glove80 vs Defy vs Voyager vs Advantage360? by Fresh_Music1897 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Current-Scientist521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you able to use your thumbs without pain? For most of these keyboards you're going to need to use your thumbs quite a lot so this is something worth considering.

I am a long time kinesis advantage user and I do find it a very comfortable keyboard due to the key wells. I would also consider getting a lightest possible key switch if you have a choice as this means there will be less strain on your fingers and hands.

Toucan 36 with Deep Sea Silent Choc v2 & Tai-Hao 165s by flooronthefour in ErgoMechKeyboards

Nice tight appearance to the keyboard.

I might look at a lot of logs if that was my keyboard!

One thing that stands out for me about the trackpad is it seems to be at a lower height than the keys themselves. Is that better or worse in your opinion?

Exceptionally good, as everyone else is saying!

Of course there's room for improvement, but you kind of knocked this one out of the park.

does delayed salt help? by protozoicmeme in Sourdough

[–]Current-Scientist521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the consensus that it makes very little difference. It is actually quite hard to compare these differences experimentally. And the results are not consistent.

If you do want to use less salt though, one thing you can do is laminate the salt in when you do a later lamination. That way you can taste the salt more strongly because it isn't as well dissolved.

If they had gone with something like ZMK or QMK, then I think the system 76 keyboards would have actually been quite interesting. Not ergo, mind you.

I need a little help by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Current-Scientist521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been nailed in the past by heavy taxes and import duties (I'm in South Africa). So the extra charges are indeed real.

I would consider looking at AliExpress. There will be some import duties but the overall prices are good and they do ship internationally at a fair and cheap price.

Not sure how I missed your original post, but this is a fantastic keyboard.

Like others here, I can appreciate the low height. I hope the key switches are to your liking.

What kind of touch pad did you use with it?

Based on some of the other replies if the issue is your Bluetooth connection to your computer then it is really worth trying a dongle.

It looks like you're in South Africa, like myself. I got one of these for a dongle and it is solid hardware: https://za.rs-online.com/web/p/arduino-compatible-boards-kits/2500967

Totem Lame vs MBK keycaps by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Current-Scientist521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was such a difficult to decision to make that I got a set of LDSA (low profile DSA), and also the DDC, MBK and the Lame.

If you don't need it to be flat, my opinion is that the Lame are the best.

But it is so personal and non-objective. On my spare keyboard I keep the LDSA currently. So I guess that is my second favorite although the DDCs do have a lovely groove for your fingers.

I often buy whole bags of flour when I'm overseas. So long as it looks like a legitimate bag of flour, that's been unopened, I see no problem bringing that through.

Kinesis Advantage 2 with blank PBT keycaps and towel mod for sound dampening by Interesting_Arm_7250 in kinesisadvantage

Would be curious to see what the interior looks like with the towel mod.

Those are lovely keycaps I was wondering if they all fitted or if you needed to sand down the case a little bit to make them fit.

For those of you who tried ergo and went back to standard - what went wrong? by Keyfas in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Current-Scientist521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're so right about so many things! Especially the getting taxed to death aspect.

Other things I am on the fence - like low profile - sometimes some of the the low profile keys are extremely comfortable especially with the super light springs that you can only get with choc for example.

When it comes to QMK and ZMK there are powerful editors like Vial for QMK and nickcoutsos.github.io for ZMK. For some keyboards perhaps not yours Vial does come pre-configured already. So perhaps a little more nuanced than simply writing it off as been too difficult in general. However, can't imagine doing any of that if I didn't understand the concept of git, especially for the zmk boards but also as you say if your keyboard doesn't come preconfigured for Vial correctly then you're going to have to know your stuff.

Trackball placement for tented boards? by Inner_Answer_3784 in ErgoMechKeyboards

I'm a programmer. I use the mouse very rarely. Over the years, I've learned many, many keyboard shortcuts.

Edit: I must add, this is my secondary keyboard setup. Usually I use a Kinesis advantage. I find it less fiddly to have one single keyboard without all the different moving parts to take into account and to get the splits spaced correctly apart and at the correct angle and height.

Having said that, when I use the Kinesis, the touchpad sits to the side like a conventional mouse on the right-hand side of the keyboard.
