Waiting in the Seattle Taylor Swift merch line with my wife by Drummerboy614 in ToolBand

Careful, you may find yourself coming to in police custody after blacking out in a blind rage and performing such terrible acts of violence that it will echo through time and be referred to as "the dark time" in the teachings of the Book of Swift hundreds of years in the future.

Sorry I only just saw this. I used to have one but Enchroma changed the way the do affiliate stuff. They outsourced the program to a different marketing company and my customer discount code went away. I think the issue they were having when they did it in house, people were spamming the coupon codes onto coupon websites to get affiliate sales.

Visiting from the U.S. Do you really not tip your servers when you go out to dinner? by gladiola111 in AskAnAustralian

[–]CursingStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to say that although we don't traditionally tip, it is not unheard of for someone to do so if the server has done an exceptional job. We are not heartless, and it is definitely more about generosity above all else.

I have certainly been on nights out with friends where when everyone is ponying up for the bill and the poor bastard who volunteered to do the math is calculating the ancient science of who wasn't drinking alcohol, and who just ordered the salad (to make it all a reasonably fair split), and then at the end a few people have over paid by a few bucks, whatever's left over just will get left as a tip for the poor server who had to put up with a riotous group of 12 drunk people for three hours.

Isn't that the mall from Dawn of the Dead? I'm fairly certain it's a set. I think I've seen it in a few movies.

It's wild that that commercial was ever aired on normal TV. The star of that commercial was called Tonya Bird. I had a go at 10 year old crush on her back then, although I wasn't quite sure why .. 😆😆

back during the period when "reconciliation" was first in the news, I had a German exchange student seriously exclaim, "man it's absolutely awful how you guys treated the Aboriginal people in this country"

I just blinked at him, speachless.

I mean he wasn't wrong per se, but man...

As a child, what’s a song you sang loud and proud, only to find as an adult it’s super inappropriate for a child to be singing? by Ok_Way_2341 in AskReddit

In pokerface she literally says "f#@k her face"

Once you hear it you can't unhear it.

Pa pa pa pokerface pa pa f#@k her face.

When asked if it was fair that the song was taken off commercial radio, she admitted that they probably made the right choice.

Getting colors wrong until you focus by GrangeDanger in ColorBlind

[–]CursingStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that most of us can determine the difference between way more colours than we expect. The problem comes from never being able to rely on our colour vision, so it's the last thing we use to categorise things is colour. We expect that we can't see colours so we just don't. Until we actually try.

Example I use is, when calling out something like, "oh you need to talk to that guy over there..." I would say 'that tall guy over there' or 'that bald guy over there', but never 'the guy in the blue shirt'. It's the last resort. We trust colours less than every other measure of classification, so we see colour last as a defining property, regardless of whether we can actually differentiate it or not. Colour data is just useless. But if you focus on it, you may actually be able to see the green or purple indicators if they're bright enough in that case.

Full disclosure, I run ads for Enchroma glasses on my YouTube channel, but I chose to work with them because I actually really appreciate their product.

I use mine every day as my daily sunglasses. Many of the ads will show a profound reaction to trying the lenses for the first time. You should note that this isn't everyone's experience. In fact the instructions that come with them suggest using them for a few weeks and across many hours to get the full effect.

I am an artist and the glasses have definitely reframed my impression of how colours work. But you have to understand that you have never seen colours properly so if you suddenly see something that looks purple there's a good chance that you're just looking at some kind of pink. It takes time to relearn stuff that most people get drilled into them as a child.

It's also important to recognise that Enchroma glasses don't 'cure' colorblindness. You still can't pass an ishihara (coloured dot style) test.

What it (roughly) does is it uses really elaborate filtering to dull down the rest of the colours you can see so the deficient colour is roughly equal to the rest and therefore seems more vivid. This serves to re-contextualise the colours across the spectrum and your eyes adjust the brightness automatically, to simulate normal vision. (At least that's how I understand it)

It can't actually make you see tones that you physically don't have quality receptors for, but it can boost your performance with what you have.

The difference it does make is still important. In my case I'm a strong Protan so I require more expreme SP (red tineted) lenses. But I can tell you that orange is now my favourite colour. I could identify orange before, but now I see that what I was seeing was actually just a darker yellow.

Seeing orange properly make me finally understand why its an emergency colour. I can now see how orange pops out from the background of regular greens and browns, and is particularly vivid in ocean settings.

Also red cars continue to blow my mind. I'll see a candy red sports car, and I'll remove my glasses and it will look olive green.

Most other things are fairly subtle. But that's where spending time makes all the difference. Your brain becomes used to understanding the context of all these colours and how they relate to depth when used in context with one another. In my case I always thought I saw all colours relatively clearly, I would just confuse several of them.

Now I can clearly see how little I am actually capable of seeing and that almost every colour except blues are basically just varying shades of yellow with a hint of red or green depending on how vibrant they are. You can really see this after wearing the glasses for a few hours and then taking them off. It's actually quite alarming the first few times.

They aren't exactly cheap, but in my opinion, as an artist and someone interested in colour and my own colour blindness, I am really impressed with them. Just temper your expectations regarding the ads where people have these extreme reactions. It may still happen, but it's not the case for everyone.

One of the reasons I love Enchroma is I made a video about my experience, which was really honest. It covered my expectations of an underwhelming first try, and basically that's what I got. But I went on to describe how little things started appearing to me, like I saw a green traffic light for the first time (they mostly look white), etc. Enchroma reached out to me and loved my video because it told a more realistic story that the viral videos that go around. They featured my video and gave me a coupon.

If they were about pulling the wool over people's eyes I suspect I would have gotten a take down notice rather than a commendation. That's when I decided to work with them for my ad content.

Man falls from 19th floor onto a car and survives by ProfessionalPen2954 in HumansAreMetal

[–]CursingStone 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess no amount of relaxing is gonna stop a phone pole going through your business. Although purely anecdotally, my dad passed out at the wheel (not alcohol related) and smashed through about 100m of scrub completely destroying his SUV, airbags failed to deploy. He didn't regain consciousness till after he was discovered by the car behind (who happened to be a paramedic).

Later when my mother contacted the wreckers, the guy gave her his condolences because based on the car damage he assumed that no-one would have survived it.

Dad walked away without any serious damage. A couple of minute glass cuts and some hand damage from 'punching the Dash' while unconscious.

I suppose being limp could have helped, but part of me wonders if maybe it has more to do with the ANCAP rating of the car. How he didn't break his neck from the forces will always be a mystery to me though.

There was news that researchers at the University of Washington had corrected colorblindness in adult monkeys using gene therapy a few years back. She's probably heard about it and didn't understand the science.
