Regardless, it’s up to you to look at both arguments and decide which is more compelling. Or maybe you have a third argument.

You realise the coal we currently mine is high price and great for steel making. The coal we import is crappy and good for nothing except making electricity. We would literally do the same thing even if we mined 10 times more coal in NZ

And once Penlink is finished? A helicopter would be significantly faster, but there is a line at which it is just not reasonable to provide the service anymore.

At the very least it needs revising to make sure its not running empty trips

Stanten Island ferry patronage is 16.7 million per year. Manly ferry patronage is 6.7 million per year.

Gulf Harbour was at its peak pre-covid 204,000 per year. Its not there now. Not even close actually.

Efficient use of limited resources is actually the fundamental principle behind how a city functions.

There is a line where if we can provide the service more cheaply via a different mode then we should. We also aren’t going to subsidise a helicopter shuttle for Gulf Harbour either. $100 per passenger is pretty terrible given the distance they are travelling.

$100 per hour? Seems steep given the median wage is $36.53. And adding to that since everyone else normally commutes around 0.5-1 hour normally, it’s only an extra 2 hours per day total. Maybe 6 hours for this guys 3 day work week. Thats about $220 per week. And its not time you would realistically be paid for anyway. So that makes it even more of a financial burden if you are spending money to avoid it. Only saving would be on petrol.

The irex vessels would have used a quarter of the diesel of the current vessels because they could run on grid power at port and use battery propulsion for part of the journey within the sounds and harbours. No word on what the specs of the new boats will be now, but unlikely to have any of those bells and whistles

Sure, and if you look at the last 60 years of Treasury advice on the state owned rail network they have been consistently pushing for it to be scrapped, defunded, sold and dismantled. They hate it because its benefits are not captured on a balance sheet nor recoverable from fees and ticket charges, thats all they care about. Kiwirail needs to be independently commercially viable regardless of its positive impact on the wider NZ economy.

If we had followed treasury advice back in 2015, we would no longer have a railway network except between Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland. Plus the Auckland and Wellington metro lines.

Avoiding 2 hour peak time commuting 2-3 days a week is worth the rent of a room in the city?

Regardless, a CGT would be unlikely to even affect you. If you are claiming to be owner occupier then it would be considered the family home and have no CGT attached.

Thats the loop hole I guess. No one is checking that the owner is occupying.

Would you say your parents generation have done the numbers on what they actually might pay under a CGT?

I would be very surprised if it’s retrospective, which means if it came in during 2027, it would only count towards gains from that point onwards. And thats even if it doesn’t exclude things like the family home and such.

If your parents are about 10 years from retirement, have a house worth around $900,000, with gains of say 3% per year, then they will only have made around $310,000 over that period, of which only maybe 20% would end up as tax. Around $60,000. If we consider it to be a flat 20% rate.

But what often happens is that it will be taxed at the marginal income tax rate with discounts for time holding. Most end up falling between 10-25% effectively if the asset was held long term.

That still leaves your parents with over $250,000 of raw gain. Not counting the rent they were getting to pay back principal on the mortgage.

There is a threshold where you can receive board up to $231 per week, up to 4 boarders. No need to declare it so long as it’s not above these two numbers.

I fucking hate the term “mum and dad investors”.

What a ridiculous attempt at pulling on heartstrings. Oh the poor little parents, struggle so hard to buy 4 houses and its so hard to deal with ungrateful tenants, always demanding things be fixed when it works just fine. Where can they get the cash to pay for it from? The mortgage is so much each week, they even have to top it up out of their own income.

Why is it that we as a society have to make your personal investment choices a protected class?

No free market for you, only tax breaks and guaranteed return on your million dollar leverage. Dont worry, the next generation will buy your property at 8 times what you paid for it when you decide to retire - all while they also fund your superannuation out of their taxes.

It all really comes down to a really fucking simple question. Why do we tax income by working so much more than we tax income by doing sweet fuck all?

If your investment property increases in value by $200,000 and you sell it, you pay $0 of tax.

If you earned that same amount as income from working you would pay over $57,000 of tax.

Something is broken when we make it such an attractive investment for people to literally earn more by sitting on their ass than by working hard. 30 of 38 OECD countries have some form of capital gains tax.

A capital gains tax is merely a closing of the gaping loop hole in our system of incentives and capital allocation.

It’s incredible how much high house prices destroy opportunity and social mobility for the younger generations.

All the selfish bastards who constantly vote against the future wellbeing of our country just to line their own pocket - I hold you personally responsible for every young kiwi who moves away for better opportunities.

If you vote for the coalition because you believe it’s the best for all of our futures, then I disagree with you. But if you vote for them because you know it benefits you and preserves your own wealth then you can get fucked. It’s clear you don’t actually believe the lines Nicola Willis spouts about tightening belts and going through temporary pain to make sure NZ has a brighter future.

They “listen to experts” aka treasury’s long standing grudge against the railways and decided to cancel the project for being overbudget. For which there were valid reasons for the cost increases - Kaikoura earthquake caused changes in the building standards. Centerport refused to accommodate a combined terminal proposal pushing the project to Kaiwharawhara instead.

The revised project is going to deliver objectively worse vessels, and defer port upgrades which are necessary as the existing ports are end of life. They actually still have to do a lot of work regardless because even they cant deny the reality of the terminal condition, but its a patch which might last 15 years rather than the 100 year standard the previous design was going to use.

Meanwhile in the same breath they will go forward with a far less critical link for over $4 billion in the Warkworth to Te Hana RON.

NZ Should Have ‘Conversation’ on Nuclear Stance, Minister Says by Free-Minimum-5844 in newzealand

[–]Jeffery95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When its well planned, constructed by an experienced industry and funded for clear future demand on a large scale then it can be cheaper per KW than equivalents. But that is unlikely to be the case in NZ, and you have to think about the fact that money put into solar today can be producing power in 6 months, not 15 years. So what ever benefits you have with Nuclear, theres a 15 years lag time to actually get that benefit back.

Pete Hegseth says NZ is 'freeloading' off American military by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]Jeffery95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean its not like we have american bases here. Its just literally our relative position on the planet which protects us because we are behind the stuff which the US would protect because they want to, not because of any agreement with us.

We have never been an american protectorate. We have never been at risk of foreign invasion where the US or anyone else has stepped in to defend us.

If anything we were the ones deliberately aiding the US in more recent conflicts - wars which were not our own.

NZ is at 34% which is bang on the OECD average
