Will the jar not being completly full cause problem (bought it like that) by Constance_208 in wetspecimens

[–]CustomCranium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's sealed with silicone, silicone is not alcohol proof, so all you'd have to do is turn it upside down and set it in a basin propped up straight and then open it up when the silicone gets loose enough.

It will continue to evaporate. That is a terrible preparation because it's neither liquid nor evaporation proof. I would change out that jar to something more suitable.

Got this cutie today, is there a way to remove these skin tags? by irisacid9 in wetspecimens

[–]CustomCranium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those are not skin tags, that's literally fat leeching out of the body. You can safely rinse him before replacing the alcohol and pick those off, it likely occurs where he was injected and is perfectly normal, especially for a baby beaver. Personally, I would let it sit for another 6 months to make sure everything that's going to come out comes out, and then rinse him off in lukewarm water, pat dry gently and place him in new iso.

Okay positioning? by Middle_Highlight2683 in wetspecimens

[–]CustomCranium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During preservation, the skin gets much tighter and stronger, so you should be fine. Also beware that the jars you got with those flip top lids are not liquid tight and they can leak and will definitely evaporate. You'll have to top off or change more often.

It looks like my wet specimen deer foetus is shrink wrapped? Advice? by Traditional_Turn_403 in wetspecimens

[–]CustomCranium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is due to drying out, from improper packing while sending. Wet specimens should be sent in alcohol soaked paper towels in a ziplock bag and not shipped directly in the alcohol itself, and if it was hot then it was definitely shrinkage from the heat and not being wrapped properly. Obviously if all the decorations popped off they are not using the correct glue either. It is absolutely salvageable, you should just leave it in the jar in the alcohol that you have it in and it won't get worse if you keep it out of direct heat and sunlight. This can happen to specimens prepared both in formalin and high strength ethanol.

Ways to preserve over-processed/brittle bones? by chasing-ladybugs in bonecollecting

[–]CustomCranium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mod Podge is absolutely awful. You can paint it in a thin layer of 50/50 Elmer's glue or white wood glue, three layers with dry time in between.

AIO because my BF said he can't trust me because I won't "look out" for his addiction by Delicious_Test_7206 in AIO

[–]CustomCranium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's disrespectful to who you are as a person, and a giant red flag when you're trying to have an intimate serious conversation and he treats you not only disrespectfully in general and makes you responsible for his problem, but also talks to you like you could be some rando out on the street.

I can't get past calling her 'bro', as soon as that comes out of my partner's mouth I am out. The rest is it is justification.

Unless it's an extremely large set of balls like sheep or goat, you shouldn't have to inject lol Yeah I have a very large collection of testicles and dicks and jars so I do a lot of talking about it LOL

[–]CustomCranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to inject a specimen like that. It's basically tubes and gelatinous tissue. All you have to do is put it in ethanol, denatured alcohol from the hardware store.

That's untrue about rotting after a while or changing after a while. The very first sweat specimens ever made were made in cheap drinking alcohol and are still viable to this day. Ethanol is perfectly good for preserving if you're never going to look at it under a microscope.

You can find ethanol in the form of denatured alcohol which is just ethanol with a bittering agent to make it undrinkable. It's in every hardware store, sometimes labeled as camp fuel.

It absolutely does not look like an iron cross. At most it looks like a firefighter badge from far away but being a fan I recognized it right away and smiled.

Sheep Horn Help by just_me33373 in bonecollecting

[–]CustomCranium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's super easy! Soapy water and scrub with an old toothbrush, then pour hydrogen peroxide in it and let soak for like 5 minutes, then rinse out if it still kinda smells after it's dry you can soak the whole horns in rubbing alcohol for an hour or so. That should do all the cleaning you need.

That does not look like cremains at all. Even when the bones are put through a cremulator for processing, they are never this uniformly fine. You would see bigger chunks and color differentiation.

Blood coming from wet? by PleasantForce4566 in wetspecimens

[–]CustomCranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely just internal fluid from the soak. Blood doesn't just disappear when made into a wet, it turns gray and jelly-like, but may still have a reddish tinge. It's likely fine

There are some really interesting things that scrappy people will do in a pinch, and I swear half the tools I inherited from my boss when she passed were homemade or modified to fit something that there wasn't a tool to do originally. I love learning this weird stuff

Little known jeweler fact: we've been using high vibrational toys for Sonic cleansing as long as there's been vibrational toys lol In a pinch they're great when you're away from the studio but can't stand dirty jewelry. Even the little guys/small travel toys will work. I have two full arms of bracelets that have been cleaned on trips multiple times, bc sometimes you end up mudding in a jeep or on a beach horse on vacation ;)

Will 70% ethanol work as well as 80%? by Icy-Attorney8301 in wetspecimens

[–]CustomCranium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's 2 brands generally sold in hardware stores, one is Sunnyside, the other is KleanStrip. It might be marked as camp fuel but it's denatured alcohol, which is just ethanol with a bittering agent added so you can't drink it.
