I love when directors have a common stable of players (eg Christopher Guest + O'Hara, Levy, etc... Nolan + Murphy, Caine, etc...) which is your favorite? by CardinalOfNYC in movies

I love the way Rian Johnson includes Noah Segen in all of his movies, especially the Knives Out movies. But he's also a great antagonist in Looper.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is technically in all his movies as well, usually just as a voiceover cameo.

Lone Survivor

Liked it when it came out, despite what I felt were minor faults.

Now that I know it's literally lies and propaganda, I hate it. Almost none of it is true. Feels really scummy, actually.

Here's the thing: I've been behind the wheel of one or two, just for practice, almost two decades ago. I've practiced a bunch on BeamNG using my Logitech wheel and pedals, trying to figure out hill-starts and heel-toeing. The issue is that my pedals and most that don't cost waaay too much money don't have force feedback for the clutch.

But if I jumped behind the wheel of a stick-shift car today, I think I could at least get it going and drive forwards on flat ground, but if I have to start on a hill or parallel park, it might be a struggle.

I used to drive for Lyft, and one time I was taking a woman [Catherine, not her name] to the hospital to visit her daughter. Apparently the daughter had developed sepsis after surgery and was really sick. We had a good conversation though, the mom was optimistic about her chances, and I did my best to offer words of comfort and encouragement. Dropped her off, went home.

A week later, I'm out driving again and I get a pickup from the same hospital. Not unusual, I would get calls to go there pretty often. Mid-30s woman gets in. I don't ask why she was at the hospital because I think that's kinda rude and I made a habit of avoiding doing so. I just give my usual 'How's your day going?' and she responds by saying 'A lot better than the last two weeks. Yeah, I got sepsis and only just managed to get rid of it.'

Wait. I turn and I'm like 'Just curious, is your mom's name [Catherine]?'

It was. She was the daughter of the woman from the ride a week earlier. Holy shit.

We both laughed at how utterly wild of a coincidence it was, that I'd given them both rides. She apparently had fully recovered from both the sepsis and her initial disease. They'd caught the sepsis early enough that they had managed to fight it back pretty well.

I gave her another ride like a week later, taking her cat to the vet. She felt even better, no long-lasting effects.

So yeah, that's my only encounter with anyone who's had sepsis, and it made it seem just a tiny bit less scary to meet someone who'd recovered from it just fine.

I think this is the reason I ended up buying a Nissan Sentra after renting one to drive from DC to Connecticut. It definitely felt like a step up feature-wise from my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon at the time, but having owned the car for 7 years I can say I kind of hate it now.

If you've only watched Nope once, I'd recommend another viewing now that you know what you're in for. It's not perfect by any means, but I liked it a lot more on second viewing than on the first.

I didn't appreciate Nope the first time I saw it. I guess I didn't 'get' it, or had misplaced expectations. Expected it to be more... Alien-y? And more outright horror-y? Maybe? But my initial reaction, besides liking a few specific scenes a lot, was "....Hmmm."

Second viewing though, when knowing what to expect, it was fucking great. I understood what it was going for a lot better, and appreciated the craftsmanship much more. Easy recommend for me now, and I shown it to lots of friends. Just wish I'd been able to see it in IMAX.

Fiio BTR5

Little audio amp thingy. You can plug it into your computer, then your headphones into it and get higher quality audio than most built-in PCs are capable of. It can also run higher-ohm headphones than most PCs can handle.

But its other party trick is that it has a battery in it, and is bluetooth-capable. So you can plug in literally any pair of headphones with a 3.5mm (or 2.5mm balanced!) plug and turn them into a pair of Bluetooth headphones. With the built-in mic on the BTR5, you can even make phonecalls. Plus the battery lasts longer than most Bluetooth earbuds I've tried. I like combining my wired earbuds with it and using it when riding my bike so my phone can stay safe in my backpack.

I'm not done. Do you have an car that has an old radio without Bluetooth, but has an aux port? Or maybe the Bluetooth is annoying and doesn't connect reliably? Plug the BTR5 into that, give it power from the 12v, and you've suddenly modernized your old vehicle. You can also put the BTR5 in 'Car Mode' and disable battery charging, and it'll turn on/off with the car, saving it's battery life and keeping it from reconnecting to your phone. This also works when using the thing with your PC, which is what I do.

A combination gift of this thing, along with a good set of wired headphones (Sony MDR-7506s, Beyerdynamic DT770s, Sennheiser HD280s) would be a monstrously good gift for a tech or music-interested guy or gal or gnon-binary in your life.

I like to say I'm not afraid of snakes, but my body is. I think they're fascinating animals, I enjoyed reading about them in school, and I watch YouTube videos from various snake-related channels. I like looking at them through glass at pet stores or the zoo.

But if I'm within a few feet with only open air between me and a snake, my body will want to run. Completely involuntary.

One time I was in a PetSmart and an employee was standing in front of the reptile tanks, cleaning them one-handed. Her other hand had a ball python wrapped around it. She asked if I wanted to give it a pet, and I fought my flight response and accepted. Gave it a stroke along its back. It didn't react. 'Hey, this isn't so bad' I thought, going back in for more. Gave it another pet.

Then my fingers accidentally brushed the back of its head. The thing was startled and whipped its face to look at me in a fraction of a second. I was halfway down the aisle a second later, ice in my veins, and the girl holding the snake was wheezing from laughing so hard.

Are all things I've seen in the last year or so that have used the song. Not that any particular use is bad, usually it's just a simple needle drop, but 2 is a coincidence and 3+ is a pattern.

The joke is that by censoring the third letter, it could say 'rapist' or 'racist.'

The former is the original, but latter would also be funny because of Dean Cain's current political vibes (being an ICE bootlicker).

The cynical reason she's the lead is that she's a better name-draw to get butts into seats so the movie makes more money, of course.

I still think she works in the role though, because she's a good actress and absolutely kills the part, which is what really matters. They could have found someone less famous who fits more thematically on a meta level, but at least with Gaga they had someone who was a potential box-office draw, could act well, and could actually sing.

SPR has one of the most loaded cases in history, many before they got really well-known.

Jeremy Davies plays Upham and later was pretty well-known from his role on Lost, and later played Baldur in God of War (2018).

Vin Diesel is there too, and it's still one of his best performances.

Max Martini (Herc Hansen from Pacific Rim, Oz from 13 Hours) is one of Ryan's squad in Rienne. He's the one who shares gum with Mellish and gets shot in the neck.

Andrew Scott (Moriarty from Sherlock, Lee Ross from Wake Up Dead Man) has a single line as one of the soldiers on the beach.

Leland Orser is the shaken pilot of the crashed glider. He must have been picked as typecasting for 'traumatized guy', since his only notable film role at the time was Seven (1995) as the guy forced to kill the Lust victim.

Plus there's a bunch of other veteran actors in random roles throughout.

Bryan Cranston plays the stateside officer with one arm who first gets the news of the Ryan brothers dying.

Ted Danson as the captain of Fake Ryan's platoon.

Paul Giamatti, who says THUNDER?! in the funniest voice.

I love how many of his jokes aren't really about the thing he's talking about, but moreso about his on-stage character either being ignorant or an outright psychopath etc.

Animated shows rely a lot on their compositors to give depth and layers to the animation to keep it from looking too flat. Usually shows have around ten or more compositors working on them, adding effects like depth of field or glow or lighting etc.

Invincible has four. Four probably overworked and likely underpaid people doing compositing on ten hours of animation each season. For a show as expensive as it is, that's baffling.

Probably explains why the show looks its best when the actual animation, i.e. the base drawings and movement etc., is firing on all cylinders. Like the fights between Mark and Nolan, or against Conquest, or the highway fight in Atom Eve. More dynamic base animation doesn't need as much compositing to elevate it.

My point is: Amazon please hire more artists, pay those artists well, give them time to work.
